Purpose of Weekly Meetings
The meetings are designed to provide education and experience with the topics presented so that all residents will:
1. Understand and be able to speak intelligently to the topics
3
4
2. Understand the topic application in clinical and surgical settings3. Pass board qualification exams successfully
Our clinical schedules require that we all work long hours, yet we still must learn, enhance our clinical and surgical skills, and make certain we are capable of providing the best care for our patients. To this end we have arranged a series of lectures heavily involving all residents.
Expectations/Format of Meetings Monthly Grand Rounds/M&M will be held during the first week of the first Tuesday of every month 6:00 pm at either St. Mark’s Hospital Classroom #3 (G130) or in different physician offices, to be determined. Remind attendings about grand rounds when you are in surgery or clinic with them.
Meetings other than Grand Rounds will be at St. Mark’s Hospital in classroom #3 (room G130) on the ground floor, west wing near the cafeteria.
Meetings at the VA, if ever, will take place in Building 9 in the Audiotrium or in the Podiatry Conference Room (where pre-op conferences are held).
Meetings scheduled at IMC will be in the Dotty Education building, room TBD.
See schedule for time and locations of each meeting. Meetings will consist of journal club discussions, McGlamry Chapter Reviews, case presentations, attending/resident/student lectures, and workshops/cadaver labs. Be prepared for updated schedules throughout the year as schedule is subject to change.
Do not be late. The attendance sheet will be passed out at 6 pm and removed from circulation at 6:15 – if you get there late, you don’t count as being at the meeting!! Do not wear scrubs or street clothes to the meetings, wear appropriate business attire (business casual). If you will be scrubbing a late case please text the Chief Resident prior to the meeting. The only residents excused from the meetings are those residents who are post-call from an in-hospital overnight call night or are taking overnight, in-hospital call at the time of the meeting—this will usually only apply to a couple of meetings during your inpatient internal medicine rotation during 1st or 2nd year, or those on scheduled vacation (note that completing documentation is not a valid reason). Notify the Chief Resident well in advance (>2 weeks) of any anticipated scheduling conflicts. If you miss a meeting where you were assigned to present a PowerPoint, McGlammry Chapter, or Case, then you are still required to email that presentation or word doc to the chief at [email protected].

A list of residents not in attendance will be sent to Dr. Hodge. Dr. Young intends to require a paper for each unexcused absence. Dr. Hodge will also be notified if a resident fails to give an assigned presentation. The same penalty will be administered for failing to do so.
Each month will have a topic (listed on each month's schedule on the following pages). Presentations for residents are assigned based on the month’s topic. McGlammry review and Journal Club will also coincide with the month’s topic. Student presentations are assigned by the 3rd year resident on the VA rotation, and should also coincide with the month’s topic.
On Grand Rounds/M&M night, the attending that it hosting the meeting and the resident working with that attending at the time should have a case or 2 to present to the group. Also, the resident who was on the IMC Pod/Ortho/Plastics rotation the month prior (the Rowan/McKenzie rotation) will also be assigned to present a case. All other residents are invited to present a case/M&M, but are not required to.
On McGlammry review nights, 1st year residents will be assigned to guide the discussions of each McGlamry chapter that is being reviewed.
For journal club, the articles will be emailed to all residents by the chief prior to the meetings. 1st year residents will guide the rest of us through each article as we discuss them and talk about cases that may relate to the article.
On student/resident presentation nights, there will be 2 PGY-1 presentations, 1 PGY-2 presentation, and 1 PGY-3 presentation, in addition to the students. Prepare compact & concise lectures. Coordinate with other lecturers in order to avoid duplication of similar content in related topics. All lectures must be prepared in PowerPoint and should be emailed to the chief email ([email protected]) within 1 week of giving the presentation. All lectures MUST include at minimum two recent peer-reviewed articles—speak to the Chief Resident if you’re having difficulty meeting this requirement in preparation of your presentation. Group discussion to follow.
In the event of a 5th Tuesday of the month, this will be a “chief meeting” in which the chief resident(s) will determine what will be done – this will range from lectures from the chief(s) to workshops to cadaver labs to saw bones workshops. These will all be TBD by the chief(s).
