Residential and commercial water purifiers are categorized as point of use water purifiers and point of entry water
purifiers. Both of these have been covered in the report in order to provide a detailed and complete understanding of
the global water purifiers market. The water purifiers are classified into membrane based, media based and UV
based water purifiers.
Membrane Water Purifiers: In membrane based filtration process, reverse osmosis (RO) or ultra filtration (UF)
membrane is used for filtering impurities such as suspended solids, macro molecules, divalent and monovalent salts
from contaminated water. RO and UF membranes are capable of removing molecules with a pore size of less than
0.0001 microns and 0.001 microns, respectively. For increasing efficiency of membrane water purifiers, water is
generally pre-treated using ultra violet (UV) or media/gravity based technologies and then passed through RO
membrane.
Ultraviolet Water Purifiers: Ultraviolet or ‘UV’ is a type of radiation found in electromagnetic spectrum, used for
removing harmful microorganisms. UV light is produced by UV lamps or UV LED. For a UV based water filtration
system to work effectively, water must be pre-filtered to remove any particles larger than 5 microns (nominal) in
size. However, UV systems are not efficient in enhancing taste and odor removal.
Media Based Water Purifiers: Media based water purifiers operate without electricity and are capable of purifying
water through activated carbon alone or in combination with other forms of media such as sand, anthracite and
zeolite. Activated carbon used in such filters forms chemical bonds with contaminants and subsequently, removes
them through filtration.
