Core HandlingALS has capitalised on its international core handling experience and has applied its knowledge and experience to North America and the Gulf of Mexico. Between the integrated labs in the UK, Australia, and Houston, ALS has cutting edge technology and processes to advance standard wellsite processing and obtain better core quality and data.

Core ProcessingALS-designed processing system integrated with ALS Coring Systems. Ability to process core in ANY length the client requests which can be inventoried and transported to the lab for further analysis.

Core Gamma Capabilities for both spectral and total gamma with either point-to-point or continuous measurements; allows clients to pick sample points prior to sampling or to identify markers within the reservoir to determine location in formation.

Matrix CapsSpecially-designed rubber and color-coded (red for downhole, black for uphole) end caps with integral injection ports for stabilisation. Also includes annular nodule to reduce shifting of core during transport.

Rotary Sidewall Core Kits (RSWC)RSWC Kits are available for either rental or mobilisation, utilising ALS engineers. Kits include necessary supplies for proper preservation and stabilisation of samples in the field. ALS will provide training to clients (if rental units are desired) to reduce costs to clients and allow onsite geologists to package and ship samples directly to the lab.

Core StabilisationALS has developed new protocols and methods for advancing core stabilisation techniques. From our patented Lithotarge® foam technology, to advances in epoxy stabilisation, ALS is leading the way in ensuring optimum core quality is achieved and no additional damage occurs during processing or in transportation.

Lithotarge® Patented two-part injectable foam provides superior stabilisation without additional personnel or high costs. Advantages range from practical application of the method, which is more robust and less dependent on variables, such as ambient temperature and time constraints, to flexibility. A major advantage is that Lithotarge® foam can be removed from the surface of the core once the core has been moved to the laboratory. Several papers have been published demonstrating the superiority and reliability of Lithotarge® stabilisation over conventional techniques.

Lithoseal Patented whole core preservation process and material. Available in low (70°C) or high temperature (100°C). All procedures follow RP40 with additional steps taken to ensure core is not subject to extreme temperatures typically associated with whole core preservation.

Core Encapsulation ALS-developed system to encapsulate core in a vapor-proof and intrinsically sealed package. Core can be encapsulated in lengths up to 6 feet with minimal equipment and personnel on location, allowing clients to collect near in-situ samples from wellsite, without having to physically go to location to select whole core samples or plugs.

Core TransportationALS has developed unique procedures and technology in order to guarantee optimum core quality once delivered to the lab. Through ALS-patented technology, Lithotrack, the client is able to view shock, temperature, and humidity conditions during the life of the shipment, in addition to viewing the location of the shipment via GPS. When used in conjunction with special core containers, Freezeboxes, clients are able to maintain environmental conditions while core is in transit, reducing any possible damage or changes in analytical results.

30’ Core Transport Utilising ALS-provided shipping cradles, core can be transported back to the lab in up to 30’ lengths. This eliminates the QHSE issues associated with field operations, reduces total headcount on location, provides a controlled environment for core viewing, and processing, and reduces wellsite costs to the client.

Lithotrack Ability to monitor and record temperature, shock, and location via GPS. Allows clients to make decisions on timing and plan accordingly, knowing EXACTLY when core will arrive at the lab.

Core Containers With specially-designed inserts, ALS has developed a core shipping program that reduces shock and vibration transfer to the core. Different density inserts are staggered throughout the system; this arrangement has proven to reduce shock as shown through our Lithotrack device.

Core Transport Unit Specially-designed core transport t r u c k s p rov i d e m ax i m u m security with increased payload. Refrigerated options, in addition to standard insulated units, provide clients flexibility and allow reductions in costs as needed.

OffshoreWith ALS focusing on the Gulf of Mexico, equipment has been specifically designed to meet the strictest standards set forth by DNV, ABS and USCG. With emphasis on safety, every aspect of the processing program has been designed to eliminate unsafe conditions and work practices often seen in the past. During the entire core processing process, engineers eliminate lifting and repetitive motions that often result in injury. Field personnel handle all items over 50 pounds with a crane.

DNV-Certified Containers Core processing containers provide clients with onsite work space, UV and White Light viewing, and all associated sampling and preservation equipment for onsite analysis and real-time sampling decisions. Some of our QHSE benefits are:

Overhead Crane – To eliminate repetitive lifting and core barrels above 50 pounds. All positioning and movement controlled by precision air balances, thus reducing potential injuries.

Equipment Ratings – All equipment is Class 1 DIV 2 rated. Intrinsically safe camera is provided to the client for use, as needed, to document the project. All plugging/slabbing/trimming equipment is rated for hazardous location, ensuring no issues when spotting the processing unit on the platform.

Bandsaw – Intrinsically safe and OSHA certified. Integrated with ALS-designed laydown cradles to reduce movement and shifting of core during the processing stage.

Core Shipping UnitUnit – 10’ and 20’ options for core transportation, reducing total numbers of units offshore which minimises costs. Available in diesel-powered or rig-powered refrigerated units with ambient storage.

Crane – Allows engineers to pick up and move core barrels segments greater than 50 pounds reducing fatigue and QHSE issues. Includes custom lifting attachments for multiple core barrel sizes.

Epoxy Stabilisation – Ability to stabilise both 3’ and 30’ sections, allowing clients the ability to fully stabilise barrels prior to being processed, minimising potential for damage to the core.

Deuterium Tracing – Ability to trace active mud systems to determine accurate fluid saturations. Class 1 Div 2 certified tracer pump allows system to be placed anywhere on rig and ensure that engineers have the best location for proper tracer additions and ratios.

CO2 StabilisationCO2 Pelletiser – Self-contained CO₂ pelletiser allows for production of dry ice on the platform. Reduces total number of shipments to the platform and aids operations where logistics offer challenges associated with stabilisation.

LithoFreeze – Custom-designed cold storage boxes with integrated temperature monitoring. Once core is stabilised, can record both temperature and data. Units provide real-time feedback and are monitored to guarantee temperatures do not exceed stabilisation requirements.

Plugging/Slabbing – Onsite plugging and trimming capabilities for client to select sampling intervals. Built in Class 1 Div 2 wax pots for preservations, clients can feel confident that every measure was taken to safeguard compliance with DNV standards for hazardous locations.

Core PhotographyALS has designed special onsite photo systems to meet the ever-growing needs of our clients. With the ability to perform endcut, panoramic, and whole core photos, clients are able to gather the information they need to make informed sampling decisions back at the lab.

XtremUV-White Light and UV Light Endcut Photography

20-second process to capture high quality UV and white-light photos in the field. Eliminates the issues of mud contamination causing false fluorescence.

Compact design allows for processing engineers to capture photos without the additional costs normally associated with High Resolution photos onsite.

Panoramic Core – Capable for full length, 30’ photos to be captured onsite, giving geologists the full picture of the core prior to being segmented.

DMT Auto Scanner – The software delivered with the CoreScan system enables all surfaces along the core to be spatially detected (layering, jointing, and cleavage), as well as enabling their statistical interpretation (based on rose diagrams and sphere diagrams). This technique offers great advantages, particularly when dealing with geotechnical questions, such as the determination of the RQD index. Sedimentological investigations can be carried out automatically with mineral grains identified and quantified based on color differences, making it possible to conduct grain size analyses and statistical investigations of grain distribution.

Onsite Analysis – The combination of Orient-Pro or Mag-Pro oriented coring with Corias AS3D technology allows reorientation, structural, and fracture analysis to be completed before degradation of the core occurs. The AS3D structural analyzer provides computer aided 3D digitisation of geometric measurements of linear and planar structures. The portable equipment enables core studies to be made at the wellsite in a timely manner.

Core Processing ModuleThe Core Processing Module (CPM) is a mobile laboratory that can be deployed at the rig site or nearest onshore location to a rig; creating the environment for generating laboratory quality processing of core.

The CPM provides a platform for the deployment of a full range of services to accelerate the sampling process and data acquisition. The two key benefits are:

1. Immediate generation of samples that can be expedited to an ex-patria laboratory, avoiding significant customs delays that whole core experiences.

2. Immediate core slabbing, photography, sedimentology, profile measurements etc, for the earliest possible provision of data – again avoiding significant transport customs delays which can impact on the commencement of laboratory analysis by over 1 month.

CPM’s are configured to a specification that meets the requirement of the client and programme. Current CPM’s are tailored to one, or a combination, of the following two set ups.

Processing, Subsampling, Core Profiling

ALS Laboratory trained wellsite technicians would be mobilised to perform the work.

Thin Section Preparation, Biostratigraphy, Mineralogy

Primarily used to aid in real time drilling and bio-steering. A team of ALS sedimentologists, petrographers and biostratigraphers would be deployed.

Core Quick View (CQV) Core Quick View provides a visual log representation of the core at wellsite via Corpro’s Half Moon technology. Rather than waiting days, weeks, or even months in some remote locations for core analysis to be performed, CQV data is made available in both hard and electronic copy within hours of core being retrieved at surface. Half Moon allows the inner tube to be immediately and harmlessly opened at wellsite.

• With the core exposed, further processing can be performed, enabling the core to be represented in an easy to understand log format. The data presented includes a minimum of rate of Penetration

Core Receiving and HandlingReceiving core at ALS Reservoir Laboratories will be easy and efficient using one of the many drive-up loading docks available. Core samples received at ALS Reservoir Laboratories will be inspected, photographed, weighed, inventoried and entered into LIMS. All core samples entering the laboratory will be handled, transported with care, and stored properly. Trained core handlers will use trolleys for low-impact transportation between core analysis stations and equipment.

Spectral Gamma Ray LoggingALS Reservoir Laboratories will use a robust dual logging gamma machine to acquire total gamma (API) and spectral gamma – K (%), Th (ppm), and U (ppm) – readings. Measurements can be made on core samples both within and outside (i.e. wax samples and slabbed samples) the aluminum inner barrel, provided that there is enough material. The sample throughput and log resolution is dictated by the belt speed (step size) of the machine. A slow belt speed (small step size) increases the resolution of the log, but decreases the production speed. A fast belt speed (large step size) produces the opposite result.

Core Shop CapabilitiesThe core shop at ALS Reservoir Laboratories will utilise brand new equipment and offer a wide variety of lubricants (water, brine, oil, and nitrogen gas) for the following core processes:

WHOLE CORE SERVICES

ExtrusionRemoving core from the inner barrel, cleaning, measuring, marking and orienting the core samples.

SlabbingCutting the core sample along its length in order to expose a slab face for testing. Slab size, shape, and direction are chosen by the client.

Cleaning/Sanding/PolishingCleaning, sanding, and polishing the slab face or desired sample, allowing for more accurate core analysis and petrography.

Plugging/TrimmingPlugging and trimming the core sample in order to perform RCAL on areas of interest within the core. Horizontal, vertical, and angled plugs with diameters of 1.0”, 1.5”, and 2.0” are available, and are chosen by the client. Plugs will be wrapped after trimming and inking to prevent water loss.

Digital Core Photography (DCP)ALS Reservoir Laboratories will offer a wide variety of digital photography options for samples of all types. Efficient and accurate digital photographs of core samples and sub-samples can be obtained using our automated camera-mounted carriage system. These digital photographs will allow our clients to view a complete detailed petrographic analysis and archived images of their core.

360 degree core and plug photography using DMT Core Scan

The DCP system includes advanced software that allows for the integration and manipulation of data, making the stitching of images and grain size analysis possible. This proprietary data consolidation software also allows for online viewing and makes scalability possible.

Helical CT ScanningALS Reservoir Laboratories will offer digital core and plug imaging using our helical computed tomography (CT) system. The machine creates a digital 3D model of the rock using x-ray technology. Not only does the helical CT imaging offer a noninvasive and nondestructive form of core analysis, but it allows our clients to create an archive of their samples long after they have been altered by testing and the environment.

A spatial resolution of up to roughly 0.5 millimeters allows small scale features, such as fractures, cracks, clasts, and pore spaces, to be visible. Imaging can also be used for orientating core samples and can be used in conjunction with other forms of core analysis services (i.e. well logs, gamma logs, and digital core photography) providing a more complete overview of the well.

ALS Reservoir Laboratories will offer two different types of digital imaging for their client’s core and plug samples:

Balanced Imaging – Good spatial resolution and good low contrast resolution. This is ideal for density and composition imaging and analysis.

High Resolution Imaging – Great spatial resolution and poor low contrast resolution. This is ideal for structural imaging and analysis.

AutoscanALS Reservoir Laboratories will offer a unique tool to collect core data on scales difficult to quantify from log and core analysis. The AutoScan is a programmable and automated machine that performs a variety of measurements on slabbed core or plugs. Measurement frequency can be set as low as a 1 mm scale to compile robust data sets that can be used to address issues with reservoir heterogeneity, upscaling, log calibration, petrophysica lfacies identification, and improved selection criteria for subsampling (or a reduction in the number of subsamples resulting in cost and time savings). Often used in conjunction with digital core photography and core description.

Steady State (SS) Gas Permeability MeasurementsVelocity Measurements: Uniaxial (Y-axis) and biaxial (X-axis, Y-axis)Hardness Measurements: Impulse HammerComposition Measurements: FTIRThe Autoscan data can be integrated with CT scans, photography, gamma, core descriptions, and other data sets for interactive depth based plotting, cross plots, cluster analysis, and rock type definition.

Extraction and LeachingDean-StarkOur extraction labs are equipped with Dean-Stark units, enabling extraction of hydrocarbons and remove water. With our dedication to safety and cleanliness, all units will be placed in customised fume hoods to remove all toluene fumes released by the Dean-Stark apparatuses. In addition to the hoods and ALS’ efforts to be environmentally friendly, a toluene recycler will also be installed to create less toxic waste while also helping to keep costs low for our clients.

Extended ExtractionThe extended extraction process is done by the Soxhlet cleaning units, also housed under custom fume hoods. These units further extract hydrocarbons and leach salts from samples after they have had water removed through the Dean-Stark process. The Soxhlet setup will consist of standard Soxhlet extractors and cool solvent cleaners, each capable of handling a wide variety of sample shapes and sizes, including large diameter whole core. The standard solvents for extraction and leaching are chloroform, a chloroform-methanol azeotrope, and methanol. Other solvents can be used at client’s request.

Permeability and PorosityMeasurements for permeability and porosity will be performed in a lab designed for consistent temperature, humidity, and closely-monitored atmospheric pressure. The drying ovens are in close proximity to scales and measurement equipment, enabling samples to be measured immediately upon reaching weight stability. When the samples enter the lab, they will be checked in and dried in the oven of client’s choosing that best fits the sample types. Samples will be weighed for grain loss, measured for calipered porosity, and then placed in the porosimeter to determine grain volume and grain density. Lastly, samples will be placed in our automated multi-sample permeameter/porosimeter to determine pore volume, bulk volume, porosity, permeability (air permeability and Klinkenberg permeability), grain density, bulk density, and slip factor ‘b’. From this data, our lab analysts will then be able to determine water, oil and gas saturations in the sample. These parameters will be measured using nitrogen and helium.

Crushed Shale AnalysisConsists of cleaning, determining water saturations, and the accurate measuring of crushed sample in the ultra-low permeability ranges.

Ultra-Low Permeability AnalysisA steady state permeability test that range from 0.1 mD to 0.0001 mD.

Full Diameter AnalysisThe ability to clean and measure permeability, porosity, grain volume, and grain density of full diameter, whole core samples.

ROUTINE CORE ANALYSIS

FUTURE ROUTINE CORE ANALYSIS

Desorbed Gas Analysis ALS provides field personnel (geologists and technicians), desorption equipment and analysis for sorbed gas samples (coal, carbonaceous mudstones and shale. Externally accredited to AS3980 against ISO9001 the desorption analysis can be short or extended dependant on the turn around time required. In alignment with industry best practice, all desorption samples are corrected for ash, moisture, temperature and pressure. The laboratory provides full lithological characterisation of the sample to accompany the photography, reconciliation of the geological logs including coal desorption samples with geophysical logs and final reporting to ensure the most accurate information is supplied to the client.

Gas Composition The gas chromatograph produces quantitative, fast, reliable, high quality results and is able to analyse from C1 to C8 hydrocarbons as well as CO2, O2, H2, He, N2 and if requested H2S.

Organic Analysis internally offered organic analysis (proximate, RD, TOC, pyrolysis, virtinite/macerals) to correct, adjust or compare gas content results based on predictive models

Sorption Isotherms Sorption isotherm analysis utilising the gravimetric method on either “as received” or equilibrium moisture equilibrated samples.

Integrated Biostratigraphic Projects (Two or more fossil groups)

Projects with fully integrated biostratigraphy are routinely carried out on wells, outcrops, and core sections. These studies are done by carefully selecting samples for analysis with two or more different fossils groups (e.g. foraminifera, nannofossils, and/or palynology).

The results are compared and calibrated to produce a robust, multidisciplinary interpretation of lithostratigraphy, biostratigraphy, chronostratigraphy, and paleoenvironment, in a single integrated display with an executive summary that is easy to read and understand by all geoscientists. When possible, absolute ages, key sequence stratigraphic surfaces, and other correlatable geological events are included in the report.

High Resolution BiostratigraphyFor reservoir and core characterisation, high resolution biostratigraphy is a key tool. Its use facilitates the understanding of subtle variations within a section of interest, such as small unconformities, or changes in salinity and/or temperature of the paleoenvironment that may affect reservoir quality within the basin. All of these factors can be determined through high resolution biostratigraphy at a selected scale down to less than a foot of resolution.
