• What is a “Foreign Component”?• The existence of any “significant scientific element or segment of a project”
outside of the United States, in other words:
– performance of work by a researcher or recipient in a foreign location, whether or not NIH grant funds are expended and/or
– performance of work by a researcher in a foreign location employed or paid for by a foreign organization, whether or not NIH grant funds are expended.

Update re: NIH Letter on Foreign ThreatsPhilip Principe, Director, Export Control & COI
• “Foreign Component” / “Other Support” Disclosures in Grant Application Process
• Identifying a “foreign component” in an NIH grant application• Listing a “non-U.S. performance site”• Identifying foreign relationships/activities in biosketch• Checking “yes” on Cover Page Supplement Form question: “Does this project involve
activities outside of the United States or partnerships with international collaborators?”• Disclose Financial resources even if they relate to work that is performed outside of a
researcher’s appointment period• PIs should review all pending proposals/active awards to ensure that all foreign
components and other support have been disclosed– If there is an omission or error in a previously submitted proposal, contact the
Office of Research and Sponsored Programs to correct

Update re: NIH Letter on Foreign ThreatsPhilip Principe, Director, Export Control & COI
• Reminder to Disclose:– “Other Support” & “Foreign Components” as part of grant
application process
– “Significant interests” (defined in UAMS Policy) as part of COI disclosure process
• Disclosure through TRACKS system• Foreign govt/entities or foreign university support
– Non compensated relationships are reportable– See UAMS Academic COI Policy
