+SCMB Postgrads
Research Symposium
Registration & Abstracts closes 19th October
Symposium 24th November, Women’s College

Brought to you by the Postgrads Committee

How (not) to present a poster
+Why a poster?
Because you don’t want to do a talk
Easy to make
Lets people read what they want/go back
An easily read summary of you research work
Visual
Tangible
+Guidelines only
These are guidelines, not rules
Guidelines can’t be broken, rules can.
Departure from the guidelines: the ultimate test is whether it does the job, not how well it sticks to the guidelines.
+
From the real world…
+Good poster design

Lots of empty space
It’s about you!
Important things = bigger font
Not so importantStuff: Small font‘backwater’ areas
Image: we know who it is by BCC without reading anytext

different (& wacky) fonts
Colour: Yellow, Red &Black means DANGER!
I can’t see that word(exception: legally requiredby the ASB)
No images (exception: probably a good thing)

+Same principles for scientific posters A scientific poster is a short, condensed summary of
your research
Content
Alignment&
Balance
Logical Flow
Consistency
Hierarchy
+Put yourself in the viewer’sshoes
What is this about?
Where do I start?
Why is this important?
What key things are they trying to say?
What are their main findings?
+
Practical or problem?

+Content
Sections are similar to a scientific paper (but not always!)
Chose a few good images (graphs, equations)
Avoid writing too much.
Don’t waste words- simple, but scientific language
Organise the chaos into sections

+Consistency & Font
Use as few fonts as possible
Don’t use off-the-planet font, unless you have special reasons to
Pick a few colours and work with those
If you use highlighting, bolding, use it sparingly
Text needs to be readable: determine experimentally by using a printer.
Must be able to read from 1.5 m away
ExampleUnderline only if you have to. Underlining is a hangover from the typewriter era. We have bold or colour to highlight now; It’s more effective.
Fonts like this are not for research communication purposes.
People won’t take it seriously.
Don’t make text so small. People won’t read it.
Text in italics makes it harder to read, but you need it for scientific names.
Nobody reads down here: use for references
This Text Jumps Around Too Much:
Use text like this.
