RESEARCH OUTPUT IN ORGANIC CHEMISTRY AREAS BY THE UNIVERSITIES OF GUJARAT: A SCIENTOMETRIC ANALYSIS

ABSTRACT This paper examines the contribution members of the universities in Gujarat particularly I the areas of Organic Chemistry for the study data collected from web of science for the period of span under the study. Various search strategies were applied to collect the and Scientometric techniques used to achieve research objectives. The study found cited items citing articles, h- index of universities and faculties in the subject area. The study further recommended for the establishment of citation database for the publication in Indian languages to provide such platform for scholarly communication in Indian language to keep a pace with the latest research trends. Key Terms : Scientometric Analysis, Web of Science, Organic Chemistry, Scholarly Communication, Contribution Output INTRODUCTION The contribution study is useful to understand research & development in subject concern at national and International level. Its relevance can be traced out so far the contribution of a group of universities located in the specific geographic area to the larger counterpart in the specific domain. The present study focuses on contribution in organic chemistry and allied areas by faculty members of the universities in Gujarat. Organic Chemistry and its allied areas having a long and fruitful evidence of its development in every sphere of life by the continuous research. Faculty wise contribution and the h-index of the faculty.

To co-relate the trends of research at national and International level. SCOPE & LIMITATIONS The study measures research productivity in Organic Chemistry area contributed by the faculty members of universities in Gujarat. It covers following 7 Universities and its faculty members in the Organic Chemistry departments.

Saurashtra University, Rajkot (SUR)

Sardar Patel University, Vallabh Vidhyanagar (SPU)

Maharaja Sayajirao University, Vadodara (MSU)

Veer Narmad South Gujarat University, Surat (VNSGU)

Bhavnagar university, Bhavnagar (BUB)

Gujarat University, Ahmedabad (GUA)

Hemchandracharya North Gujarat University, Patan (HNGU) METHODOLOGY The study has been undertaken keeping in mind the contribution by faculty of universities and comparative analysis in Organic Chemistry area for which data has been collected from 1998 to 2011 from Web of Science. Researchers have extracted data from web of science for the period of span under the study. Various search strategies were applied to collect the data and scientomertic techniques used to achieve research objectives. ANALYSIS OF DATA

Research contribution of faculty of Universities in Gujarat.

Above table and chart shows Total Articles (countrywise). The total numbers of articles are 557 from all

countries. It is observed that the contribution of India is 367 and it is highest contributions. While China’s

contribution is 39 which was second number

.

FINDINGS

Web of Science is very much helpful to know the research quality research productivity and research

output. On the basis of analysis of collected data the present study concludes that :

The highest h-index(12) is found of SUR while SPU second ranked with 7 h-index,MSU,VNSGU and BUB

is third ranked with 5 h-index.

It is found that most cited author such as Kawase M, Shah A, Gaveriya H, motohashi N, Skagami H,

Varga A, Molnar J from SUR comes on first rank as most cited author; they were cited 61 times which is

the highest, while Desai B, Sureja D, Naliapara Y, Shah A, Saxena Ak.from SUR comes on second rank as

most cited author; they were cited 41 times which is the second highest.

It is found on the basis of top ten cited author’s h-index that the highest h-index 16 respectively of

Mathusamy S.& Gunanathan C. from BUB.

Top ten cited authors have been ranked. First author Kawase M; Shah A;Motohashi N;Sakagami

H;Varga A;Molanar J from SUR while Thaker KM;Kachhadia VV;Joshi HS;is last ranked author of SUR.

On the basis of country-wise analysis of cited items, it is found that most of the items cited in India

i.e.367(65.88%) while very less items cited by other countries. The total number of cited items is 557 in

different subject categories.

SUGGESTIONS

On the basis of the study with Scientometric analysis in Organic Chemistry some feasible suggestions are

mentioned here for further improvement.

There should be some arrangement and provision to motivate faculty and researcher to engage in the

area of Research in the current trends with a team of dedicated researcher.

Strong channels for effective communication for scholarly publication should be implemented with

sound planning. This may guide the prospective authors to publish their research work in highest

impact factor journals.

Motivate authors for writing and publish in open access journals to scale it on larger and longer

audience and usability. This can be sort out wih the deposition of research paper in an institutional

repository or a subject repository at state/national level.

Engage the faculties to review on publishd research work to foster peer communication channels.

Encourage the faculties to maintain professional social contact with others in pertinent research area.

Some training programme should be organized for effective use of Web of Knowledge.

RECOMMENDATIONS

During the process of this study researchers observe that there is strong need to establish such type of

Citation Database. India should look forward and prepare such platform covering scholarly communication in

Indian languages to keep a pace with the latest research trends.
