Description: The American Physical Society invites nominations for the Aneesur Rahman prize for computational physics. The purpose of this award is to recognize and encourage outstanding achievement in computational physics research. Nominations are open to scientists of all nationalities regardless of the geographical site at which the work was done. The prize is ordinarily be awarded to one person, but a prize may be shared when all recipients have contributed to the same accomplishments. RTHUR L SCHAWLOW PRIZE IN LASER SCIENCE American Physical Society

Description: The American Physical Society invites nominations for the Arthur L Schawlow prize in laser science. The purpose of the award is to recognize outstanding contributions to basic research that uses lasers to advance knowledge of the fundamental physical properties of materials and their interaction with light. Some examples of relevant areas of research

are: nonlinear optics; ultrafast phenomena; laser spectroscopy; squeezed states; quantum optics; multiphoton physics; laser cooling and trapping; physics of lasers; particle acceleration by lasers; and short wavelength lasers. AVID ROGERS RESEARCH FUND Catholic Record Society

Description: The Catholic Record Society invites applications for the David Rogers Research Fund awards. RANCIS M PIPKIN AWARD American Physical Society

Description: The American Physical Society invites nominations for the Francis M Pipkin award. The purpose of this award is to honor exceptional research accomplishments by a young scientist in the interdisciplinary area of precision measurement and fundamental constants and to encourage the wide dissemination of the results of that research. The award is given biennially every odd-number year and consists of $2,000 plus support of travel expenses to the APS meeting at which the award is conferred. Scientists who have held the PhD degree for not more than 15 years prior to the nomination deadline are eligible for the award. The award recipient will be selected on the basis of outstanding work in the area of precision measurement and fundamental constants, as represented by his or her publications and three nominating letters. The purpose of this award is to recognize contributions to understanding condensed matter and non-linear physics through shock compression. Description: The American Physical Society invites nominations for the Leo Szilard lectureship award. The purpose of the award is to recognize outstanding accomplishments by physicists in promoting the use of physics for the benefit of society in such areas as the environment, arms control, and science policy. The lecture format is intended to increase the visibility of those who have promoted the use of physics for the benefit of society. The award consists of $1,000, a certificate citing the contributions of the recipient, plus $2,000 travel expenses for lectures given by the recipient at an APS meeting and at two or more educational institutions or research laboratories in the year following the award.

ICHAEL WILLIAMS RESEARCH FUND Catholic Record Society

Description: The Catholic Record Society invites applications for the Michael Williams Research Fund awards. These encourage the study of the historical connections between Roman Catholicism in England and Wales with the situation in other countries in Europe in the post-Reformation era. The fund will help to defray the travel and basic subsistence costs of research on relevant material in English and European archives and libraries. The research should be intended to lead to publication as a book, a contribution to a book, an article in a learned journal, or as a full-length paper accepted for presentation at a national or international ecclesisastical history conference. Description: The American Physical Society invites nominations for the Nicholson medal for human outreach. This medal recognizes the humanitarian aspect of physics and physicists, and shall be awarded to a physicist who through teaching, research, or science related activities:

has demonstrated a particularly giving and caring relationship as a mentor to students or colleagues, or has succeeded in motivating interest in physics through inspiring educational works;

has created special opportunities that inspire the scientific development of students or junior colleagues, or has developed programs for students at any level that facilitated positive career choices in physics;

has successfully stimulated the interest and involvement of the general public on the progress in physics.

Recognition consists of the Nicholson medal and a certificate which includes the citation for which the recipient has been recognized. Up to $1,500 will be available for the recipient's travel expenses to the meeting at which the medal is presented.

Description: The Academy of Sciences for the Developing World and the Chinese Academy of Sciences invite applications for their fellowships for visiting scholars in China. Up to 15 awards are available to enable visiting scholars from developing countries other than China to pursue advanced research in the natural sciences. Description: The Academy of Sciences for the Developing World invites applications for the TWAS-BIOTEC postdoctoral fellowship programme. Description: The Academy of Sciences for the Developing World invites applications for the TWAS-icipe fellowship for visitng scholars in Kenya. This enables a visiting scholar, who is a national of a developing country other than Kenya, to spend one to three months at the International Centre for Insect Physiology and Ecology in Nairobi, in order to conduct research. Fellowships are tenable in the following departments: animal health; human health; plant health; environmental health; molecular biology and biotechnology; behavioural and chemical ecology; entomology; field station at Mbita, Lake Victoria. Description: The Academy of Sciences for the Developing World invites applications for its fellowships for young scientists in developing countries.
