Description: Harvard University invites applications for the Charles Bullard fellowships in forest research. The purpose of this fellowship programme is to support advanced research and study of forestry and forestry-related subjects from biology to earth sciences, economics, politics, administration, philosophy, humanities, the arts or law.

Bullard fellowships are generally awarded to individuals in mid-career who have established themselves in public service, in academia, or in the private sector. AGELLAN WORKSHOPS International Continental Scientific Drilling Program

Description: The International Continental Scientific Drilling Program, in collaboration with the European Consortium for Ocean Research Drilling, invites proposals for its Magellan workshop grants. These enable proponents to organise workshops which integrate scientific marine and continental coring with topic relating to Earth’s surface environmental change, processes and effects, the deep biosphere and sub-seafloor ocean and solid Earth cycles and geodynamics. A typical workshop will last for two to four days, and will have 20 to 35 participants. The participation of young scientists is encouraged. ATIONAL EUROPE CENTRE VISITING FELLOWSHIPS Australian National University

Description: The Australian National University’s National Europe Centre invites applications under its visiting fellows programme. Funding enables local and international scholars to undertake research at ANU as part of its mission to promote research, education and dialogue between Europe and Australia. The following awards are available:

visiting fellows grant. These last between one and six months. The grants cover accommodation and airfares for the visiting fellow. The maximum contribution for travel is $3,500;

visiting scholar. This award, worth $5,000, is aimed at current PhD students and junior academics within two years of the completion of their doctoral studies. This financial assistance is for travel and accommodation.

The broad theme for research in 2012-2013 is the European Union, Australia and the Asia-Pacific region. Within this theme, several research interests involving Europe, Australia and the Asia-Pacific region can be pursued, such as:

regionalism and regional economic integration;

defence and security; climate change and energy security; culture, language and history; public policy and governance; people movement across the borders.

Other research interests will also be considered.

Description: Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds invites applications for its PhD fellowships. These support basic biomedical research conducted by scientists not older than 27 years in an internationally leading laboratory in Europe. The research should be aimed at elucidating basic biological phenomena of human life and acquiring new scientific knowledge. Applicants will hold a diploma or equivalent degree and have passed their state examinations when applicable. At the deadline, applicants should not have worked on their project for longer than six months. Applicants should be European citizens working in Europe or overseas or non-European citizens pursuing their PhD project in Europe. Scholarships are granted for at least two years, with the option of renewal for a further 12 months. The basic monthly grant is worth €1,550. In most countries scholars are paid an additional €150 per month to cover minor project-related costs such as books and travelling expenses and premiums for personal insurance. A separate country-related premium is added and spouse or child allowance may be available. ESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center

Description: The Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center invites applications for its research fellowships. The fellowships enable scholars to pursue research projects in all areas of the humanities. Approximately 50 fellowships are awarded annually. Priority will be given to proposals that concentrate on the center's collections and that require substantial onsite use of them. The center awards fellowships of one to three months, with funding at $3,000 per month. Awards cover any branch of the humanities or social sciences and are intended to focus on collaborative research on a specific theme of mutual interest. In this round the scheme is open to one-year and three-year partnerships between UK scholars and scholars in Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, the Middle East, and south and east Asia. One-year awards may be viewed as pump-priming grants while three-year awards will develop research further and involve a more extensive programme of collaboration and exchange. Workshops and seminars should form an integral part of the programme. Partnerships including a training element and involving early-career scholars will be looked on favourably. Both a principal and co-applicant are required for this scheme. EVERHULME - ROYAL SOCIETY AFRICA AWARDS (PHASE II) Royal Society

Description: The Royal Society, in partnership with the Leverhulme Trust, invites applications for phase II of its Africa awards. This scheme is intended to assist in strengthening the research and training capacity in research institutions in Ghana and Tanzania through the transfer of specific skills. Applications are welcome in all areas of the life and physical sciences, including engineering but are particularly encouraged from the following five national research priority areas in Ghana and Tanzania:

agriculture (including animal health); water and sanitation; basic human health research

(including medicinal chemistry); biodiversity (including medicinal

plants and green chemistry); energy (including biofuels).

There are two new additional elements to the award:

applicants may include an additional African research institute within sub-Saharan Africa as part of the project proposal. This is an optional element and carries no additional funding;

applicants may include a PhD student as part of the project proposal. Should applicants wish to

do so, additional funding of up to £10,000 per annum is available to support a PhD student based at the African host institution.

It is expected that most of the research is undertaken in the African laboratory or field site. Both the UK and Ghanaian or Tanzanian project leaders must be of at least postdoctoral status or equivalent and have a proven track record of training students at masters and doctoral level. The UK scientist must be resident in the UK and the Ghanaian or Tanzanian scientist resident in Ghana or Tanzania. UK scientists must hold a permanent or fixed-term contract for the duration of the award. Existing award holders whose project ends in 2012 are eligible to apply. Funding is provided for three years and is worth up to £60,000 per annum, or £50,000 per annum for proposals that do not include a PhD student. OMMUNITY-BASED CLIMATE CHANGE ACTION GRANTS Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID)

Description: The Australian Agency for International Development invites applications for its community-based climate change action grants. These grants are available to Australian and international non-governmental organisations for the purpose of providing community-based adaptation and mitigation strategies for climate change in South-East Asia and the Pacific. The grants fall into two main categories: adaptation, which will help build community resilience to climate change; mitigation, which will help communities reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. Applicant organisations should also take into account Australian development priorities, which are:

using existing community structures; ensuring members of the community

Adaptation activities should also aim to build resilience to climate change impacts on vulnerable communities, and mitigation activities should provide credible estimates of reduced emissions. There is a total available budget of $30 million for this call, with between $1m and $2m available for projects in Pacific countries, and $1m and $3m available for projects in countries in South-East Asia. grants for publications and seminars, awarded to promote high-quality book or translation projects, to support the visualisation of publications or to cover costs of archival work. Also available in this category is funding for the organisation of seminars and academic gaming-related guidance;

grants for master’s theses, which are awarded for talented master’s students to cover necessary travel expenses. Priority is given to applicants who seek to continue their studies toward a doctoral degree. Grants are worth a maximum of €4,000.

Description: The International Society for Aerosols in Medicine invites applications for its student research award.
