RESEARCH AND

SPONSORED PROJECTS

The Office for Research and Sponsored Projects assists the faculty and staff of Loyola Marymount University to obtain grants,

contracts, and fellowships in support of academic excellence and the mission of the university.

Getting Lean

Professor Bohhdan W. Oppenheim was recently

featured on the LMU Homepage and in Seaver

College News article (see below). He was also

recently awarded a research contract to study

Kaiser Permanente’s specimen transportation

system in Southern California.

Working with a graduate student, Professor

Oppenheim will examine ways to reduce the

transportation time of clinical specimens

between KP collection facilities and the Regional

Laboratory without increasing the current cost of

the transportation system (a reduction of cost is

desirable, if possible). Such projects illustrate

the many and various ways that ‘lean’ system

engineering practices can improve the

healthcare system.

See “The Changing Face of Healthcare,” in the

February, 2015 edition of Seaver News to read

more about Professor Oppenheim’s work.

On March 27th, 2015 Michael Erlinger from the National Science Foundation’s Division of Undergraduate Education presented a talk titled, "Why Was My NSF Proposal Not Funded?” If you want to learn more from an insider about how to write a successful proposal, look under “Resources to Apply” at http://academics.lmu.edu/orsp/

3rd

Quarter Awards

NSF Program Officer at LMU

By the end of the 3rd Quarter this year, LMU had received $2.2 million in research and sponsored projects funding. Last year, at the same point in time, LMU had been awarded $3.8 million.

The drop off may reflect lower application levels from the prior two years or perhaps declining funding rates at the federal level. However, the only way to receive an award is to apply, and applications are up substantially this year.

In January, the United States Institute for Theatre Technology (USITT) awarded Leon Wiebers, M.F.A., Professor of Theatre and Dance at Loyola Marymount University, a research fellowship to support the development of a new folk musical, “Good Dirt,” which is inspired by Helen and Scott Nearing’s book, The Good Life and durae (traditional Korean farming rituals and practices). Since 1960, USITT has served design, production, and technology professionals in the performing arts and entertainment industry and is dedicated to actively advancing the knowledge and skills of its members by offering grants and fellowships in performing arts design and technology that promote innovation in the industry’s respective specializations. Under this award, Professor Wiebers will travel to South Korea to study performance traditions, dress and rituals around Korean farming practices. Durae is a traditional practice in rural Korea in which the entire community is organized for the purpose of planting or harvesting. Music, dance and performances, important

aspects of durae, accompany these events. He will visit a traditional historic village as well as museums to gather information that will inform the development of a new performance piece. In collaboration with performing arts colleagues who are members of the Agnes Table collective in Vermont, Professor Wiebers will design and contribute to the text and development of the performance which will explore challenges and dreams about communal work, identity, place and heritage. The presentation of the work, “Good Dirt,” will be at partner farm sites and theatres across Vermont and New Hampshire. The USITT Fellowship also allows Professor Wiebers to further his research in hanbok (traditional Korean dress), which he began during his year as a Fulbright Scholar (2012-2013). His specific focus is on the everyday, rural dress of the Korean people, which, unlike the dress of the wealthy and affluent, is rarely documented through publication or included among artifacts in U.S. museum collections or exhibitions.
