Seminar on Intellectual Property, Patents And Trade Mark
The Directorate of Human Resource Development, BUITEMS in collaboration with ORIC-
BUITEMS and Intellectual Property Organization of Pakistan (IPOP) organized one-day
seminar onIntellectual Property, Patent & Trade Mark on April 18, 2017 at Pink Seminar
Hall, BUITEMS Takatu Campus.
The objective of the seminar was to create awareness among the faculty members/
researchers of all five faculties about the importance of intellectual property, especially IP as
a tool for economic growth and wealth creation. The seminar helped in generating a better
understanding of the potential of IP system and its importance in the modern times. The
following resource persons delivered their lectures and provided useful information on the
subject:

3. Ms. Urooj Fatima, Patent Examiner, IPOP
Mr. Nasrullah, Deputy Director IPOP discussed the intellectual property and trade marks in
detail. After this Ms. Urooj Fatima, Patent Examiner IPOP, explained the need of patents and
how it can protect research/ invention rights. She explained ways and means as to how the
researchers need to secure their work by patenting their product / procedures. IPOP, she
highlighted, is working for this purpose. Prof. Shahwani delivered a comprehensive lecture
on “The Role of Patent Information in Promoting Innovation”. Afterwards a questions
answer session was held. At the end Prof. Dr. M.A.K. Malghani, addressing the participants,
admired the efforts of Directorate of HRD and ORIC for arranging an informative seminar
and thanked the resource persons who came from IPOP Karachi for sharing ideas and
procedures with BUITEMS researchers. The ceremony ended with a vote of thanks and
distribution of shields and certificate among the participants and resource persons.

BUITEMS Textronics & Carl Laboratory Team Wins 2nd Place in 2nd
All Pakistan Dice-Textile Innovation Event 2017
A team from BUITEMS TEXTRONICS and CARL (Control Automation and Robotics Lab)
participated in the All Pakistan DICE-Textile innovation event 2017, held on 28th and 29th
March, 2017. Muhammad Junaid Sultan and
Surjeet Kumar from TEXTRONICS Laboratory
and Zulkafil Abbas from CARL presented
their research on ‘smart textile fabrics and
their applications’, and secured 2nd place in
the competition amongst 100 industry and
university projects from all over Pakistan.
The smart textiles project is an ongoing
collaboration between the Department of
Electronic and Textile Engineering,
BUITEMS, headed by Dr. Anayat Ullah Baloch and Dr. Syed Zameer Ul Hassan.
DICE Textile 2017 is a focused strategic initiative of DICE Foundation USA, led by National
Textile University (NTU) Faisalabad in close collaboration with consortium universities,
textile Industry, and government. The major objectives of DICE Textile platform are to grow
indigenous textile industry in Pakistan by providing a common platform for Academia,
Textile Industry, Government and Expatriates to promote and collaborate on innovations
related to textile sector, commercialization of innovations, textile engineering capacity
building leveraging knowledge of expatriates around the world, providing access to Pakistan
textile industry to international markets leveraging extensive expatriate network and to help
Government of Pakistan in textile policy making

2nd Prize Winner in All Pakistan DICE Textile 2016 Innovation
Competition
National Textile University, Faisalabad
in partnership with DICE Pakistan and
Pakistan Council for Science and
Technology (PCST) has organized one-
day event “All Pakistan DICE-Textile
2016 Innovation Event” on March 21st,
2016 at NTU Faisalabad. Textile
departments of all the national
Universities, textile associations,
representative of HEC, Ministry of Science and Technology, Ministry of Textiles and more
than 200 delegates from all over the Pakistani industry participated in the event.
The project presented from BUITEMS, was a joint venture of "Textile Engineering" and
"Electronics Engineering" departments. Two students from each department namely Surjeet
Kumar & Muhammad Junaid (Electronics) and Syed Bilawal Raza & Wasim Ali shah (Textile)
under the supervision of Dr. Syed
Zameer Ul Hassan, Associate Professor
(Department of Textile Engineering),
Participated in this event. They
presented their work under the title
“Design and development of textile
based strain sensor for technical
textiles applications focusing medical
and sports textiles”. BUITEMS managed
to win the 2nd Prize of Rs. 60,000 in this
national mega event. The team was awarded the cheque and a shield from the chief guest.

SATHA Award 2016
On May 4-5th, 2016 Prof Dr. M. Naeem Shahwani, Director ORIC-BUITEMS received “South
Asia Triple Helix Innovation Award” on the occasion of “SATHA Awards 2016” of 1st
Invention to Innovation Summit Balochistan held at University of Balochistan, in recognition
of his global achievement in research on “Establishment of technologies for growing exotic
grape vine nursery plants under controlled hydroponics conditions with supplementing
artificial nutrition and growth hormones in a short time span compared to conventional”.
Nawab Muhammad Khan Shahwani (Minister S & GAD Balochistan) and Dr. Javed Iqbal (Vice
Chancellor University of Balochistan) for his achievement at the closing ceremony held at
Quetta club on May 5th, 2016.

Young Development Leader Award
Dr. Abdul Wali Tareen, Associate Professor Department of Biotechnology, was awarded the
“Young Development Leader Award” at the award ceremony of 2nd anniversary of vision
2025. The ceremony was organized by
Ministry of Planning, Development and
Reform held at Islamabad on August 11th,
2016. The event was attended by
Minister for Planning, Development and
Reforms Mr. Ahsan Iqbal, Minister for
Information Mr. Pervez Rasheed, State
Minister for Education Mr. Balighur
Rahman, HEC Chairman Dr. Mukhtar
Ahmed and people belonging to different
fields of life. The Young Development
Leader Awards were given to thirteen high achievers in different sectors including
agriculture, engineering, information technology, entrepreneurship, community services,
science, biotechnology, education, energy, arts and culture, health, innovation, and
emerging sciences. Dr. Abdul Wali Tareen was given the award for his excellent
achievements in the field of Biotechnology.

HEC Best Paper Award for BUITEMS Scholar
Ceremony for 4th outstanding research awards was held on March 13th, 2015 at Higher
Education Commission (HEC) Islamabad.
Awards were conferred upon researchers
under various categories including lifetime
academic achievement award, best innovator,
best book publication, best research paper
and best young research scholar. The winners,
belonging to six different disciplines including
Biological Sciences, Engineering and
Technology, Basic and Applied Sciences,
Management Sciences, Social Sciences, and
Humanities, were awarded with cash prizes in
an auspicious ceremony organized by HEC. The
award for the ‘Best Research Paper’ was
conferred upon Professor Dr. Jamil Ahmad in
"Biological Sciences" from Faculty of Life
Sciences and Informatics BUITEMS. Dr. Jamil Ahmad was awarded with a certificate and cash
prize of Rs. 50,000. Congratulating the award winners, the Federal Minister for States and
Frontier Regions Lt. Gen (R) Abdul Qadir Baloch proposed to the researchers and scholars to
pay attention towards the areas which can contribute to the development of the regions in
which their respective institutions are located.

Life Time Achievement Award for BUITEMS Teacher
Dr. Mohammad Nawaz, Professor of Mathematics BUITEMS was awarded Life Time
Achievement Award by National Mathematical Society of Pakistan on March 16th, 2016 in a
ceremony held at Lahore. Prof. Dr. A. D. R. Choudary, founding Director General of Abdus
Salam School of Mathematical Sciences,
GCU Lahore was the chief guest at the
occasion. Dr. Mohammad Nawaz has over
40 years’ experience in education
consisting of teaching, research,
assessment and evaluation, curriculum
development, administration and
training. His areas of research interest
include Quantiles, Localic Groups, and
Non-Classical Logics. In the same
ceremony, the first Abdus Salam Shield of
Honour (ASSH) was awarded to Prof. Dr.
Hassan Azad. The evaluation committee
for ASSH was chaired by Professor Cedric Villani (Field Medallist). The Abdus Salam Shield of
Honour was created by the National Mathematical Society of Pakistan in April 2015 in order
to take the Pakistani Mathematical community on track of quality research. The main
research interests of Prof. Dr. Hassan Azad are Lie Groups, Algebraic Groups and Algorithms
related to these fields.

SPE 2016 South Asia Student Paper Contest
SPE ISM (Indian School of Mines) Chapter, established by Society of Petroleum Engineers
(SPE) in 1984, is committed to help students learn about the industry by encouraging the
exchange of ideas with others, and enhancing their knowledge through a variety of
educational events. SPE 2016 South Asia Student Paper Contest was organized by the SPE
ISM Chapter on March 16th-18th, 2016 at Dhanabad, India. Mr. Kamran Khan, BUITEMS
student of BS Petroleum and Gas Engineering 8th semester presented his paper titled
“Hydraulic Fracturing in Tight Gas Reservoir in addition to Nano Technology” and stood 1st in
the Undergraduate Division. SPE International has invited him to present his research in
another international conference “Annual Technical Conference & Exhibition (ATCE)” to be
held at Dubai, in September 2016.

All Balochistan Intervarsity Software Competition
On June 1st, 2016, Department of Computer Science, Sardar Bahadur Khan Women’s
University Quetta organized All Balochistan
Intervarsity Software Competition. Students
of BUITEMS belonging to various departments
namely Computer Engineering, Computer
Science and Information Technology,
Biotechnology were led by Ms. Waheeda
Jabbar,
(Assistant Professor) and Ms. Sara Ayub
(Assistant Professor) from Computer &
Electrical Engineering department. A Project
from Computer Engineering Department
“KINECTOR: A Communication App for Dumb and Deaf People”, secured Second position,
and “Robust detection of Glaucoma using CDR and hybrid features” from Department of
Biotechnology secured Third position in the Competition.

Pakistan has hardworking engineers, says UK expert
Pakistan has hardworking and qualified engineers, as the country is making progress in
various fields of engineering, said British expert consultant Martin Smith on Saturday.
He was addressing the concluding session of the 8th International Cinvil Engineering
Congress at the IEP(institute of
Engineers, Pakistan) Convention Centre
on Shara-e-faisal.
The inaugural ceremony of the two-day
event was held at the NED University of
Engineering and Technology on Friday.
Smith said he was returning home with a
positive message for other countries,
including the UK, and had enjoyed his
brief stay in Karachi. “It is a very
beautiful place with peace loving people”. The consultant encouraged local engineers to
participate in such events to share their ideas, designs and projects with experts for their
reviews and suggestions. He told the young engineers about new methods and technologies
being used in building mega projects around the world, stressing that civil engineering could
resolve many problems of Karachi.
Forty-five research papers were presented by engineers from the US, the UK, Iran,
Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Bhutan and Malaysia, while Anwar Hazoor from Quetta was awarded
a shield for submitting the best research paper, which was on transportation engineering.
