Many milestones have been crossed by the institution

founded by the great philanthropists Sri Meda Kasturiranga Setty and Smt. Nagarathnamma Meda Kasturiranga Setty. The visionary that he was, Sri M C Sivananda Sarma, the founding Secretary of Rashtreeya Sikshana Samithi Trust, has laid a foundation for education that has left an indeli-ble impression in society. Late Dr. C N Mangala, the first principal of the College, a visionary and a legend has indeed made a remarkable contribu-

tion to value based education that has carried forward this institution towards a Golden Jubilee in a couple of years.

The College recently received a grant of Rs. 110 lakhs by Department of Science and Technology as a part of the "Fund for Improvement of S&T infrastructure in universities & higher educational institutions (FIST) grants. In fact, after accepting auton-omy and recognized as a College with Potential for Excellence, the in-

frastructure of the College has devel-oped in leaps and bounds watching the potential of its faculty members, students and other stakeholders of education. The magnanimous man-agement has taken a keen interest in every step of the development of the College. For an institution to grow, the building bricks are the main pa-rameters of Coordination, Coopera-tion and Cohesion of understanding. These are the driving forces that has brought the College to nearly 50 years of meaningful existence.

all our blood cells, the transplanta-tion of which will aid the curing of cancer and other chronic diseases”, said Dr. Srinivasa Gowda, former professor of Pathology at BMC and former Principal of KIMS, in his speech on the importance of Bone Marrow donation and the need for it at the Bone Marrow Registry en-rollment camp, an initiative of the Bangalore Medical College Devel-opment Trust, in association with Infosys foundation, was organized by the efforts of NSS, Youth Red Cross Wing and The Arogya Ken-dra of the college on 05th January, 2016 at Shashwathi Auditorium.

There have been many attempts on describing the psychological

workings in Ashvatthama’s mind in different situations in the times of Mahabharata, but here is a book which delves deep into the character and intriguing personality of Ashvat-thama, but only during the present times. The thirst of many mytholo-gy-lovers to know where might the immortalized figures be at present in this world and how are they travers-ing through their seemingly endless lives receives a partly – fulfilling quench in Krishna Udayashankar’s new book-“Immortal”.

Ashvatthama has been heavily criticized as inhuman, vile and evil, but he remains the most elusive and mysterious character for all In-dians today. This element defines the author’s portrayal of Professor Bharadvaj, the name with which Ashvatthama is travelling the length and breadth of this world in the book at present. At the verge of taking up a new identity, he is called by, on basis of his previous profes-sion’s obligations in the form of Maya Jervois, a historian who of-fers Ashvatthama a quest to search the Vajra, a weapon he had been searching for since its beginning and she herself is alluring, beautiful and the very kind of woman who could match Ashvatthama’s needs intellectually. He is attracted by the adventure’s prospects as Maya has

one of the pieces of the Vajra with her. Along with his trusted aide Manohar, Ashva and Maya embark on an incredible journey which takes them to the under-sea laby-rinths of the Somnath temple, then the Siddhashrama in Nilgiris and ends in the deserts in Pakistan hiding the hall of Arunachaleshwara, where the last piece remains hidden. The journey is not easy as Asva risks the discovery of his true identity which he painstakingly hides from every-one, fights off the evil forces hot on their pursuit while searching for the pieces and faces ultimate forms of betrayal. Ashva’s perspective with which the entire novel is written offers his views on the never-van-ishing stigma on his character in the minds of all Indians, repent and review of all his mistakes through a resigned tone, cautious yet power-fully drawn by the very feeling of love in the spiritual sense toward Maya, which makes him realize his purpose of life, her the fixed centre

of his tumultuous existence.

Krishna Udayashankar makes us reconsider our life while sketching Ashva’s course to find meaning in his own. The background is clever-ly and explicitly described in order to bring out the imagery in it and define the changing emotions and complexity of the situation and the protagonist. The natal touch she has with Bengaluru makes itself evident in the final pages of the book as she makes Maya travel through the city’s most popular lanes.

This book is racy, bewitching and one that will take you into its world and possess you until you are com-pletely consumed in its power of fantasy, fiction, romance, historical background provided, grave losses and adventure creeping out after ev-ery turn of the page.

Dear Zindagi, a Bollywood Drama was witten, directed and co-pro-

duced by Gauri Shinde of "English Vinglish" fame. Released under the banner of RedChillies Entertainment (Gauri Khan), Dharma Productions (Karan Johar) and Hope Productions (Gauri Shinde), it is one rare Bolly-wood film that didn't invest a ma-jor chunk of it's time and money in pompous promotional work. Instead of the conventional Trailer-release format, small descriptive video snip-pets were released to give an insight into the theme of the film. The simple and beautifully scripted venture of 22 crores got a pleasant response from the critics and audience alike, making a large impact on the box office with an earning of 138.9 crores in total.

The movie chooses to address com-mon, yet complicated topics like the suppressed childhood memories and it's impact on the child-parent rela-tionship, the effect of external inter-ference in the circle of a family (by relatives or society), passionate career choices, happy-hippie urban life and the questionable love-lives according to societal norms.

Kaira is a camerawoman (one of her kind) who is good at what she does. Doing what she passionate about, 3 best-friends and a relationship with her childhood sweetheart Sid (a rich businessman), Kaira has everything near to a perfect life. Raghuvendar (a handsome young producer) expresses his feelings for her, but by the time

she feels a connection with Raghu, jeopardizes her relation with Sid, to reciprocate her feelings for him, he is engaged. At the same time, housing is-sues will compel her to go and stay at Goa, with her parents; an idea she ab-solutely dreads. After many sleepless days and nights full of internal strug-gle, she overhears Dr. Jahangir Khan alias Jug (a Goan psychologist) at a conference. After a having come to terms with the fact that the deteriora-tion in her mental health is immensely affecting her professional and person-al lives alike, she decides to see Jug.

The story carries on to show the journey of Kaira, to rediscovering a new improved version of herself. The movie ends with a premier of Kaira's shortfilm in Goa, with all her near and dear ones from family and work fra-ternity, being present including Sid, Raghuvendra and Rumi (her crush-turned-friend, a musician) conveying that she has made a peace with her past and is making the best of her present.

As Kaira, Alia Bhatt has done a very convincing portrayal of a young, ambitious girl struggling to make her stand in an unconventional field of work, caught up between the hurri-cane of career, love, disappointments and abandonment issues. Shahrukh Khan, as the divorced, middle-aged Psychologist from Goa who helps trig-ger the acceptance and self-realization button in Kaira, looks too comfortable in the shoes of Jug. Natural acting by all characters and the simple-sweet musical touch makes it all look easily convincing.

As a film, Dear Zindagi was not first the film to address the mental health problems, especially Depres-sion. But it took the responsibility of questioning the common beliefs and perceptions we, as a society, have formed about these issues to an ex-tent of making them almost a taboo to openly speak about or discuss. Par-ticularly addressing Depression, the film shows the complexities of the condition which might not be so evi-dent even to people who interact with a subject on an everyday basis, but in a very simple way where most of us can easily make genuine connection. The important message that, it is ok to not feel ok all the time and it is very much ok to express, discuss and seek help if necessary, is delivered efficiently. It sweetly inspires us not to let our past backmail our present, to ruin our beautiful Future and that is one lesson, worth keeping close to our hearts.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S

DESK

A keen observation over the history of the College, gives us so many de-lightful insights that makes us under-stand that nothing is easy and for every feather in the cap of this edifice, a lot of work has been done by the stakehold-ers of the College.

The contemporary scenario of educa-tion has brought in a number of inno-vative changes. These changes are no-ticeable in every nook and corner of the institution. In fact, it’s observed even in Vartha Vahini, which is being published from the past 46 years with the unstint-ed support of the management, student editors, reporters and the faculty mem-bers of the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication. Indeed, it’s no mean achievement for the member of the Department of JMC and the Col-lege to relentlessly bring out a college newsbulletin every Republic Day and Independence Day which appears more like a Magazine on newsstands. Happy Republic Day and Happy Vartha Vahini reading !!!
