FAYETTEVILLE – CUMBERLAND COUNTY, NC

Fayetteville is a city in Cumberland County, North Carolina. It is the county seat

of Cumberland County, and is best known as the home of Fort Bragg, a major

U.S. Army installation, where several military airborne units are stationed.

Subsequently the military personnel population and culture which has diffused

throughout the area has made the city The World's First Sanctuary for Military

Families. Fayetteville has received the prestigious All-America City Award from

the National Civic League three times. The population of the Fayetteville area,

which includes Fort Bragg and Pope Field, is just over 300,000, Fayetteville,

with over 203,000 residents. Fayetteville metropolitan area is the largest in

southeastern North Carolina, and the fifth-largest in the state.

The area's largest employers are: Fort Bragg, Cumberland County Schools,

Goodyear, Tire Company, Cape Fear Valley Health System, Cumberland

County Government, Purolator, and Fayetteville Technical Community College.

Two military installations are the backbone of the county's economy. Fort

Bragg and Pope Field pump about $4.5 billion a year into the region's

economy, making it one of the best retail markets in the country. Fayetteville

serves as the region's hub for shops, restaurants, services, lodging, health care

and entertainment.

The area is served by Fayetteville Regional Airport (FAY) with approximately

258,000 passenger departures annually and almost 6,400 scheduled flights

annually. Cumberland County is served by I-95, which is one of the busiest

north/south interstate corridors in the US.

Education and a commitment to research have long been a key part of life and

business in North Carolina, Fayetteville and Cumberland County. In addition to

North Carolina’s nationally known higher education institutions, such as North

Carolina State (Raleigh), Duke University (Durham), and University of North

Carolina (Pembroke), local employers can tap into education & training support

from their local postsecondary sources, Fayetteville State University, Methodist

University, and Fayetteville Technical Community College.

Fayetteville’s local workforce has higher-than-average educational attainment,

with a high number of degree holders in STEM disciplines, especially in

Biological & Biomedical Sciences, Computer and Informational Sciences, and

Mathematics and Statistics. The area’s K-12 school districts also have an

excellent reputation for developing a solid educational foundation.

FORT BRAGG

Fort Bragg was built as the first modern military base in the state in 1918. It is

one of the largest military installations in the world in terms of personnel.

Currently, more than 50,000 active duty personnel call Fort Bragg home. As

part of the Base Closure and Reassignment (BRAC) process, Fort Bragg

recently took command of Pope Field, formerly known as Pope Air Force Base.

The U.S. Army Forces Command and U.S. Army Reserve Command were

relocated to Fort Bragg as part of the BRAC process, which means that Fort

Bragg now has the most starred generals in the country outside of the

Pentagon.
