Reported Speech

Reported Speech Speech that is reported without using the

exact words of the speaker. Sometimes called ‘indirect speech.’

e.g. Tom said that he was feeling sick. Direct Speech

Speech that is written using the exact words of the speaker, without any changes.

e.g. Tom said, “I’m feeling sick.”

Exercise 1

(1) Liz (said/talked/told), “I will do that job.”

⇒ said

(2) I (said/talked/asked) him to open the door.

⇒ asked

(3) Our boss (said/told/talked) us to reach the goal.

⇒ told

Exercise 2

(1) 彼は私に言った。「今、何時ですか」 He [me to said now what time is it]?”

⇒ He said to me, “What time is it now?”

(2) ガリレオ・ガリレイは地球が太陽の周りを回っていると言った。

Galileo [the earth the sun around goes that said].

⇒ Galileo Galilei said that the earth goes round the sun.

(3) 審判は選手にその場から退場するように命じた。

The umpire [the player the filed to leave ordered].

⇒ The umpire ordered the player to leave the field.

(4) チャールズはダイアナに言った。「どうか結婚してほしい」

Charles [Diana to said please me marry].” ⇒ Charles said to Diana, “Please marry

me.”

(5) リサのお父さんがリサに、次の日曜日は暇かどうか尋ねた。

Her father [Lisa the next Sunday free if would be asked she].

⇒ Her father asked Lisa if she would be free the next Sunday.

(6) 手品師が観客に箱の中には何が入っているか尋ねた。

The magician [the audience the box in what was asked].

⇒ The magician asked the audience what was in the box.
