Contents

Uttarakhand Open University (UOU) was established by an

Act of Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly in 2005 (Act No. 23

of 2005) with the aim of disseminating knowledge and skills

through distance learning, using the flexible and innovative

methods of education to ensure ‘independent learning’. The

University uses novel educational programmes, various

modes of communication technology and contact sessions to

make distance learning more effective. The major objectives

of the University are to cater to the educational needs of the

target groups to create skilled and knowledge-based human

resource for speedy upliftment and development of the State.

The University aims to impart quality education by

maintaining high academic standards. For this purpose, it has

radically reoriented itself in view of the rapid changes in the

sphere of professional and technical education and has

developed a number of new and innovative self-employment/

employment oriented courses of study. Uttarakhand Open

University is especially focusing on the educational needs of

women, the tribals and other marginalized sections. It has

extended its reach to most distant and difficult places and has

made its presence felt even in the remotest corners of the

state.

Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is a campaign launched by the Central

Government of India to clean the streets, roads and

infrastructure of the country's 4,041 statutory cities and

towns. The campaign was officially launched on 2nd

October,

2014 at Rajghat, New Delhi, by our Prime Minister Shri

Narendra Modi. It is one of the most significant cleanliness

campaigns launched by the Government. In this largest-ever

cleanliness drive more than 3 million government employees

take part. The campaign aims to achieve the vision of a ‘Clean

by 2nd October, 2019.

As desired by UGC, Uttarakhand Open University under the

leadership of our Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor has taken lead to

organize “Swachhta Pakhwada” from September 1-15, 2017.

In this Swachhta Pakhwada event, more than 80 students and

staff members of UOU participated in its programmes.

2. Swachh Bharat Abhiyan

1. To aware and educate the staff of the Uttarakhand Open

University and students studying in different Educational

Institutions on the significance of cleanliness and hygiene.

2. To provide a common platform to all the Students and staff

members of UOU through different competitive events.

3. Programme Objectives

Following activities were organized while observing the

Swachhta Pakhwada by the University:

Installation of dustbins in the premises of the University.

Displaying of banners on Swachhta to aware the staff &

students of the University.

Essay Writing competition for the students.

Power Point Presentation by the students.

Cleanest Room Contest for the teaching and non-teaching

staff of the University.

Experts talk about the importance of the cleanliness and

sanitation.

Key Lecture delivered by Prof. R. C. Mishra, Registrar of

the University.

A Mass pledge by the students and the teachers of the

university.

Plantation programme with and by the student participants.

Campus cleanliness Action in the campus.

On the first day of the event after having the programme

formally inaugurated and being blessed and encouraged by

our honourable Vice-Chancellor the organizing committee of

the Swachhta Pakhwada installed the dustbins on the

important locations in the premises of the University.

7. Details of Events Held

On Sept. 2, 2017, Banners developed and designed by the

organizers, highlighting the Swachhta Pakhwada were

displayed on the different walls at common place of the

University.

2) Displaying the banners on Swachhta

To disseminate the Swachhta message among the participants

and the people around, essay writing competition was organized

for the students of the university. More than Thirty-five

students from different institutions participated in the Essay

Writing competition. The theme of the Essay Writing

competition was on “Innovative Ways for Spreading the Message

of Hygiene”.

Certificate of participation and prizes were given to the

participants. Dr. Shashank Shukla and Dr. Rajendra Kaira, Dept.

of Hindi evaluated the essay written in Hindi and English

language essay was evaluated by Dr. Preeti Bora, Dept. of

Home Science.

Power Point Presentation competition was held in the conference hall of

the University. The theme of the competition was “Health and Hygiene

is the Real Wealth”. This competition was conducted to enhance the

awareness on Health and Hygiene of the participants. Six different teams

representing various Educational Institutions participated in the

competition.

4) Power Point Presentation Competition

Dr. Manjari Agarwal (Dept. of Management), Dr. Gagan Singh (Dept. of

Commerce) and Dr. Sumit Kumar (Dept. of Management) acted as the

judges of the PPT competition. The Judges evaluated the performance

of the participants on the basis of different criteria including their Body

Languages, Communication Skill, Contents, Use of Pictures and Question

Round. 10 minutes were given to each team to complete their PPT. After

having a tough fight among the teams, finally, judges have drawn the

names of the following winners:

Management

A Cleanest Room Contest was organized among the teaching and non-

teaching members of the Uttarakhand Open University. The main objective

of the competition was to increase the awareness and habit of cleanliness in

and outside the office rooms. Mrs. Abha Garkhal, Finance Controller and Prof.

Rambha Joshi acted as the Judges of the competition. Subsequently, they

visited all the office rooms of the University and on the basis of their

observation based on various criteria. The names of the following winners

were declared and the winners were rewarded with certificate and prizes by

University officers.

5) Cleanest Office Room Contest for UOU

An interactive session on Importance of Cleanliness was

organized. The students from different study centres and other

Educational Institutions participated in the session. Dr. Preeti

Bora, Academic Associate & the Programme Coordinator and

Mrs. Monika Dwivedi, Academic Associate, Department of

Home Science, Uttarakhand Open University were the key

speakers in the session. The speakers also highlighted the

“Importance of Food and Hygiene”.

6) Expert Talks on the Cleanliness

The participants took special initiative to plant the flowers &

fruit plants in the premises of the Uttarakhand Open University.

Dr. Vinod Birkhani, the Administrative officer & Horticulture

expert helped the students in the plantation. Further, he

delivered a lecture on the significance of plants and its

relationship with the environment.

7) Plantation with and by the Students

The teaching/non-teaching staff and the students of the

University undertook Swachhta Pledge to keep the premises

clean and green. The participants jointly agreed and

undertook Oath (Shapath) to contribute at least two hours a

week for this noble cause in and around them.

8) Mass Pledge by the Staff and the Students

of the University

In addition to the aforesaid activities, “Campus Cleanliness

Drive” was convened by the University officials and the

participants to clean the campus on 15 Sept. 2017. Finally,

after two hours of this drive under the banner of “Swachh

Bharat Mission” the campus groomed into neat and clean.

9) Campus Cleanliness Drive

Professor R. C. Mishra, Registrar of the University delivered

a scholarly talk on Cleanliness and its significance in our day

today life. As an eminent environmentalist, he highlighted the

significance of Swachh Bharat campaign in the context of

climate change and sanitation.
