An elementary instructor certificate course was held on 27 November 2011 (Sunday) to introduce the program to 83 teachers and elite skippers to train them the skills and techniques of teaching rope skipping at schools.

A one-day seminar was held among experienced group leaders of technical judges on 16 October 2011 (Sunday) at the Chinese Young Men’s Christian Association of Hong Kong. After evaluation and thorough discussion, the scoring method of the JRFH Inter-school Rope Skipping Competition was fine-tuned so that it would be more easily rated and can save manpower.

Schools that have participated in JRFH for 2 years or more (N=266) were invited to apply for the Jump Rope for Heart School Activity Subsidy Program 2011 to conduct heart health educational or promotional programs at schools. The JRFH Finance Committee perused all 22 applications and approved granting HK$97,188 to 17 schools.

The 9th World Rope Skipping Championships will be held from 30 July to 9 August 212 at Tampa, Florida, U.S.A. The JRFH secretariat received 5 sponsorship requests from athletes of the Hong Kong Delegation. The JRFH Finance Committee approved granting HK$205,000 to sponsor all 41 athletes with applications (@HK$5,000). Amongst these 41 athletes, 5 have decided not to join the event, thus not received the sponsorship from JRFH.

In view of the success of 2010 World Heart Day Drawing Competition, Hong Kong College of Cardiology has once again hosted the Inter-regional Drawing Competition for ICHHN. The Competition for Year 2011 was divided into 2 groups: Junior Group (age under 12) and Senior Group (age 12-17), with the theme “One World, One Home, One Heart” (全球護心 家家齊心) for both groups. This year, four regions namely Hong Kong, Toronto, Vancouver and Brunei had successfully organized a drawing competition for local students. The drawings of the winners from each region were sent to Hong Kong for the final competition. Vancouver student Tina HUANG and Hong Kong student YEUNG Wun Yan won the Championship of the Junior Group and Senior Group respectively.

7,000 beautiful ICHHN 2012 calendars, with key heart health messages, were printed and distributed to member nations, HKCC Fellows, JRFH participating schools and other related organizations. 12 most outstanding drawings, among many high-standard and creative winning drawings obtained in the past 10 years, were selected and printed on the calendars. Very positive feedback was received.

Working Group on Cardiac Computed Tomography

Previously, Hong Kong Cardiologists had to go overseas for Coronary CTA Training but in February 2012, a Coronary CT Angiography Training (Level 2) Course was held at St. Teresa’s Hospital in conjunction with the Society of the Cardiac Computed Tomography. Candidates were entitled to the Level 2 certificate after completing the course. It is hoped that such a course will be held regularly for the benefit of doctors in Hong Kong.

Small but relentless technical improvements of coronary computed tomography continue. The radiation involved, once considered prohibitively high, can now be reduced to sub-mSV. Improvement in detector technology, coupled with better software enable much improvement in the quality of the images. Patient with atrial fibrillation, difficulty in holding their breath and patients with high heart rate can all be scanned.

The usefulness of coronary CTA as a screening procedure has effectively reduced unnecessary invasive coronary arteriogram and hence reduce the risk associated with the invasive procedure. The use of coronary CTA in strategic planning of the percutaneous coronary intervention enables the interventional cardiologist to perform the procedure quickly, safely and effectively.

The College will continue to support members who express an interest in coronary Cardiac Computed Tomography. Hong Kong has the best equipment, case load, enthusiasm and peer support for such a venture.
