WORLD SPACE WEEK 2012

Karachi Station

1. INTRODUCTION

The World Space Week-2012 was celebrated in Karachi from 4-10 October to create awareness about space sciences & technology & its applications for the benefit of humanity. The theme for WSW 2012 was “Space for Human Safety & Security”. As part of the celebration, SUPARCO hosted a series of lectures and presentations for teachers, students and the general public alike, space simulations in the PIA Planetarium, quiz and declamation contests and poster and model making competitions were organized for creating enthusiasm among students. Space Fair was also held on the weekend for the masses.

2. SUMMARY OF THE EVENTS ORGANIZED:

a)

The inauguration ceremony of WSW-2012 was held on 4-Oct-2012. The Chief Guest for the event was Pir Mazhar ul Haq, Sr. Minister for Education & Literacy. Govt. of Sindh. Dr. Sajid MIrza, Member (ST), Secretary SUPARCO, Air Cdr Arshad H. Siraj and Sr. Member (SAR) Mr. Imran Iqbal received the Chief Guest. After the recitation from the Holy Quran the ceremony started with the welcome address by Member (ST), Dr. Sajid Mirza, than Chief Guest delivered his speech in which he highlighted the role of SUPARCO in scientific activities specially related to space research.

b) The first round of Quiz Competition was held on 4thth Oct, 2012 at the NCRG Auditorium. 17 teams comprising of two students from each school participated in the contest out of which 04 teams were selected for the final round held on 6th October, 2012 at the space Fair day at the PAF MUSEUM. Galileoscopes & certificates were distributed among the position holders by Senator Javaid Jabbar.

c) The declamation contest was held on 05th and 6th Oct, 2012. The declamation contest is one of the many events organized every year during the World Space Week. This is year too, it was held on 05th and 6th Oct, 2012. The event was divided into two rounds – The preliminary round was held on 5th Oct 2012 at NCRG Auditorium- SUPARCO HQs. After the preliminary round, top 5 contestants were qualified to compete in the final round which was organized on 6th Oct 2012 during Space Fair at PAF Museum...

Topic for the preliminary round was “Space for Human Safety & Security” Topic for the final round was “Space for Human Welfare”

d) Space Education Bus activity purpose was to promote space science and technology awareness program among students of remote areas of Sindh. It inspired students about Cosmos and its wonders. The areas covered include Ghlam Ullah Town, Gharo, Steel Town and Thatta. 6 schools were visited during the space Week.

e) SUPARCO in collaboration with PIA arranged “Sky Simulation Show” at PIA planetarium, Karachi. Schools were entertained on the basis of their availability and willingness for the program. It was hoped that each day approx. 400 students plus teachers from different schools would be witnessing this program.

Space Fair in connection with World Space Week, 2012 was organized at PAF Museum Karachi on 6th & 7th Oct, 2012. Event was planned to be held during week holidays of Saturday & Sunday, anticipating maximum participation of people in the event. All In-house available resources were best utilized; however, some essential activities were outsourced. The event was a great success. The following stalls were arranged during fair and exhibition:

g) The Space Fair University Project Display event provided a good forum/platform for universities to showcase their different projects. Student from different universities displayed projects related to disciplines like robotics, electrical, electronics, computer engineering, software engineering etc. The universities participated in the event were:

h)

Model Making Competition was organized WSW 2012 at PAF Museum, Karachi on 6-7 Oct 2012. In this competition students from 12 well known schools of Karachi participated and showed their talent and interest in space sciences. These students presented their ideas regarding various topics related to space sciences through the models. During the competition, a well done effort by the young students was observed in terms of presentation, art work, knowledge etc.

i) Philately stall was setup in at PAF Museum, Karachi. The stall was setup in coordination with Mr Arif Balgamwala, the stamp collector. Mr Allah Ditta, Asim and Sultan organized the stall from SUPARCO. Mr Arif

Balgamwala brought a good collection of space related stamp collection to the stall and displayed it well to the public. Stamp tickets issued by Pakistan Post office on 16 Sep 2011 on the launch of Paksat-1R satellite were sold

j) In order to make occasion of the WSW-12 more informative, SUPARCO organized one day seminar on the topic of “Space for Human Safety and Security”. The chief guest for the event was Prof. Dr. Jawaid Qamar. During the seminar different lectures were delivered on the subjected theme. There were two sessions of seminar, the 1st on the Natural Resources and Environment and the 2nd session was on Space and Human security.

Water Rocket Teachers’ Training Workshop for school teachers in Karachi was held on 12 September 2012 at SUPARCO HQs, Karachi. SUPARCO officials designated to conduct water rocket activities at different stations also reached Karachi 2 days prior to training workshop. The workshop was officially inaugurated by Secy SUPARCO, Air Cdre (Retd) Arshad Hussain Siraj in NCRG Auditorium. Dir HR Air Cdre (Retd) Muhammad Iqbal Chaudhry distributed the certificates to all the participants at the end of the training. A total of 151 schools were invited to attend the workshop out of which 72 teams from various government, private, suburb and special children schools participated. A comparatively larger number of participants in the workshop as compared to previous water rocket events were appreciated. Participants showed great interest and enthusiasm while taking part in this activity.

Water Rocket Practice Session in Karachi was held on 25 September 2012 at SITT premises, SUPARCO Plant, Karachi. This activity was organized to facilitate the students participating in the competition

The Water Rocket Competition in Karachi was held on 4 October 2012 at SUPARCO Headquarters, Karachi for the students aged between 11 to 15 years in accordance with the APRSAF (Asia Pacific Regional Space Agency Forum) rules for International Water Rocket event. This criterion was sent to all the stations. The participating students designed water rockets which meet specific construction and launch criteria and could either hit the target or land at a minimum ground distance from it. Between the two launches, the best was considered as the final launch.

Water Rocket Demonstration at Family Fair was held on 6 and 7 October 2012 at PAF Museum, Karachi. The chief guest of the event was Mr. Javed Jabbar who visited SITT stall along with Secy SUPARCO Air Cdre (Retd) Arshad Hussain Siraj and Member ST Dr. Sajid Mirza. Apart from the conventional water rocket and its enhancements like LED rockets and unique style of launchers, the innovative project of image acquisition through water rocket using dual parachute recovery system was also demonstrated in the family fair this year. The water rocket was incorporated with a wireless camera which sent live video transmission of ground displayed on a multimedia screen. Another water rocket was embedded with temperature and pressure sensors, camera and transceivers which sent the environmental observations and images displayed on a GUI using MATLAB. The tricopter project displayed on SITT stall was a demonstration of self balancing multi rotor for aerial photography.

Islamabad Station

1. INTRODUCTION

The World Space Week-2012 was celebrated in Islamabad from 4-6 October to create awareness about space sciences & technology & its applications for the benefit of humanity. The theme for WSW 2012 was “Space for Human Safety & Security”. This year Institute of Space Technology (IST)-Islamabad organized various activities for the school and the college students to create awareness in this most important segment of the society about the usefulness of space technology.

2. SUMMARY OF THE EVENTS ORGANIZED:

a)

Institute Of Space Technology (IST) organized a three day activity based program to celebrate World Space Week at its campus at Islamabad from 4th to 6th October 2012, with a view to generate space awareness among the general public and students from a large number of schools and colleges of the twin cities and surrounding areas. The World Space Week began with an impressively elegant opening ceremony on 4th October in IST auditorium at 9.30 am. Vice Chancellor IST, Engineer Imran Rahman presided the inaugural session.

The audience was enlightened with scholarly views about Space exploration and space for human safety and security which was the theme for this year’s World Space Week. Dr. Sohaib A. Khan, explained the Socio Economic Applications of Satellite Imagery. Dr. Imtinan ul Haq gave a talk on the use of Space for the Security and Safety of Humanity. Brig. Mubasshir ul Haq Abbasi and Dr. Farrukh Chishti shared their valuable thoughts on the various aspects of Space Technology and its applications.

b) Space Quiz was held on October 5, 2012 at the IST auditorium .The questions consisted of various areas related to space technology and its uses. A preliminary written test was taken to select six teams for the final competition. Twenty three teams took part in the event. There were five rounds of questions each round had twelve questions. Six teams made it to the final competition by securing the highest marks in the qualifying round. Roots College International 1st Avenue DHA Phase I, Islamabad won the competition and runner up Jinnah Education System Schools Section (Boy Wing) Taxila Cantt.

Bilingual Declamation Competition (Urdu and English) was organized on October 5, 2012 in IST auditorium. Twenty Five Students participated in English Declamation Competition and Twenty three in Urdu Declamation. The students had prepared the topic well. They spoke with confidence and enthusiasm. It was a neck to neck competition and the judges found it difficult to evaluate the first, second and third prize winners as all the students spoke wonderfully. Public School & College, Chaklala, Summaya Nadeem of PAEC Model College Nilore Islamabad and Khurram Shahzad of PAF Public School Lower Topa Murree took First secound and third prize respectivly.

d) Space Model Display Competition was held at the IST on October 4, 2012. Thirteen schools/ colleges participated in the event. The models were displayed in the main lobby of the IST and a large number of people visited the stalls displaying the models and appreciated the innovative ideas depicted in the models prepared by the students. The students explained the models with confidence and by providing scientific evidence. It was difficult for the judges to choose the best model as all of them were excellently engineered. The first second and third prize went to Jinnah Education System (College Wing) Gulshan Colony Taxila, Islamabad Model College for Girls Humak and Islamabad Model College for Girls (IMCG) F-10 / 2, Islamabad respectively.

Bilingual Essay Writing Competition was held on October 4, 2012 at the IST presmises. Thirty schools/ colleges took part in English Essay Writing competition and twenty three school/ colleges in Urdu Essay Writing Competition. The topic for the Urdu essay writing competition was given on spot. The students were given duration of one hour to complete their essays while staying within the prescribed word limiting of one thousand words. Judges were invited to evaluate the essays and to award the first, second and third prizes. The names of the prize winners in the English Essay Writing Competition were Farhana Irshad of PAEC Model College Nilore Islamabad, Sundas Zulfiqar of KRL Model College for Girls Kahutta and Huma Khalique Ghauri of SLS Montessori and High School G-11/4, Islamabad. The names of the prize winners in the Urdu Essay Writing Competitions were Abdul Bais of HITEC College for Men Taxila Cantt, Muttar Zehra of CDA Model School I-9/4, Islamabad and Umaima Rehman of SLS Montessori and High School G-11/4, Islamabad.

f) Painting and Sketching competition was held on October 4, 2012 in IST lawn. Twenty Eight schools took part in painting and Twenty Two in Sketching competition. They came up with some very good ideas and showed quite a mature hand in painting and sketching. All the paintings and sketches were displayed in the gallery which was visited by a large number of the general public. The judges awarded the first, second and third positions. In Painting Competition the prize winners were Ahsan Shafiq of Bahria College Islamabad (Boys Wing) E-8, Islamabad, Ali Asghar of PAF Public School Lower Topa Murree and Affaf Zubair of Jinnah Education System (College Wing) Taxila Cantt. In Sketching Competition Abdullah Bin Shahid of PAF Public School Lower Topa Murree, Awais Aslam of Jinnah Education System (Boys Wing) Taxila Cantt and Zoha Naqvi of Jinnah Education System (Girls Wing) Taxila Cantt.

g) Water Rocket Competition was organized in continuation of the celebration of the World Space Week on October 6, 2012. Twenty schools took part in the competition. The students took keen interest in the event and applied their scientific concepts to make the water rocket. The water rockets covering the longest distance were awarded prizes. Cant Montessori School Lalkurti (Junior Branch) won the first position, Islamabad Model School for Boys G-8/4 Islamabad secured the second position and Military College of Jhelum (MCJ) got the third position.

h) Aero Modeling Competition, owing to this competition the participating students got aware of the Airplane building techniques and mechanism of Air flight. The event began with an orientation/ training session on October 5, 2012 leading to a formal competition which continued till October 6, 2012.

A total of about one hundred (100) students of Twenty Five (20) different schools/colleges actively participated in the said contest. The competition included the assembling of the Rubber Powered Aero Modeling and their test flights. A panel of judges evaluated the assembling quality and flights perfection. The aim of the competition was to inspire young students and to pursue their careers in the field of Aerospace Engineering. In this Competition Bahria College Islamabad (Boys Wing) E-8, Islamabad won first prize, Roots College International DHA Phase-1 got secound prize and PAF Public School Lower Topa Murree got third prize

i) Glider Competition is one the most prestigious competitions in this competition fifty six (54) participants from fourteen different school/ colleges participated. Teams have to design and build a rubber band-powered model airplane predominantly out of balsa wood which they have to assemble within allocated time period. An introductory/ training session was held at the start of competition in which students were given demonstration of assembling. A panel of judges evaluated the assembling quality and flights perfection. The winners of the competition are awarded first, secound and third prizes. The winners of the competition are PAEC Model College Nilore Islamabad, Jinnah Education System (College Wing) Taxila Cantt and Roots College International DHA Phase -1, Islamabad respectively.

On-Spot E-Poster designing competition was arranged on October 5, 2012 in IST Labs. About Fourteen (14) different schools/colleges participated in the event. The competition provided an opportunity to school/ college level students to show their aesthetic sense and command on computer's designing software so that they can produce good visualizations in their careers. Best designed posters were awarded first, secound and third prizes. The names of the prize winners are Maaz Khan of Joint Staff Public School & College, Chaklala, Ali Shah Lakhani of Global Systems of Integrated Studies (GSIS) Islamabad and M. Usman of PAF Public School Lower Topa Murree respectively.

e-Poster Designing Competition

k) (1). SUPARCO Stall: In order to exhibit space science applications in different sectors stall was setup.

Satellite Models were also displayed. Faculty Members, Students and visitors showed great interest in knowing more about the space technologies and their applications. Documentaries on SUPARCO and space were also shown. Students from schools were keen to know about various satellites that were launch by SUPARCO. They were also keen to know how space technologies can help layman of Pakistan.

Exhibition/ Displays:

(2). Lab Visits and Demonstrations: Various displays like UAV lab, poster display, satellite model display, space history wall display, painting and sketching display, Mushaq plane demonstration were a regular feature of the World Space Week.

(3). Space Theatre: As a part of Space Week celebrations a Space Theatre was set up on 4, 5 and 6 October, 2012 in IST Auditorium. Conforming to its purpose, movies about space were shown in this

theatre. These movies focused on facts about space and also highlighted the efforts made by scientists to unravel the secrets of this mysterious part of the universe. The theatre was seen by students coming from fifty schools.

(4). Book Stalls: Book stalls of different variety were on display to cater the literary and informative needs

of the visitors and participants.

(5). Astronomy Night: Astronomy Night was organized to encourage people to know more about the space and for star gazing.

l) Family Fair was another exciting feature which attracted a large number of people. Kids arena was set-up including Slide, Jumping castle, Tall-man, Dancing Fly Guy/ French Clown, Balloons and Cartoon characters. Kids with visiting families were joyous and entertained utterly. Musical evening was arranged on October 6, 2012 followed by the prize distribution ceremony.

WORLD SPACE WEEK 2012

Lahore Station

1. INTRODUCTION

World Space Week is an international celebration of science and technology, and their contribution to the betterment of the human condition. The theme of 2012 was “Space for Human Safety and Security”. This year, SUPARCO has extended WSW activities in 10 major cities of Pakistan with the partnership of key educational institutions.

Arrays of events were carried out at Lahore Station. The WSW celebration started off with Inauguration Ceremony at Satellite Research and Development Centre-Lahore. Selected Guests and officials delivered their speeches in seminar that followed the ceremony and later documentaries/ movies were shown to the audience.

Many competitions were held during the week like, Quiz Competition, Model Making Competition, Bilingual Declamation Contest and Water Rocket Competition. Quiz was related to different domains of space technology and was conducted from teams of different participating schools. Model Making Competition was held among the students, it provided them the opportunity to showcase their talent and creativity in the field of science and technology. Water Rocket Competition was held as well with the aim to create awareness of rocket sciences and its governing laws among school children.

Other exciting events like Astronomy Nights, Sky Simulation Show, Seminar and lectures were arranged as well with the aim to increase the awareness of outer space among the students and general public.

2. SUMMARY OF EVENTS

a) A seminar on “Space Applications” was arranged during the World Space Week 2012 at SRDC-Lahore. The objective of the seminar was to create awareness about the applications of space technology in different fields and to give an introduction of SUPARCO’s achievements in space applications. Participants of the seminar were invited from various government and non-government organizations including universities, research institutes, schools and colleges. Provincial Education Minister Mr. Mujataba Shuja Ur Rehman was invited as Chief Guest of the ceremony but due to official commitment he regretted a night before. Four guest speakers from public and private organizations were invited to share their knowledge and experience with the audience. A presentation, highlighting SUPARCO’s space application work, on behalf of SUPARCO was also delivered.

Seminar on “Space Applications”

Among the speakers Mr. Danial Hasmi, Director, Snow and Ice Hydrology, WAPDA shared his work on “Use of Remote Sensing & GIS in Hydrology Modeling”. Subsequently, Dr. Sajid Rashid Ahmad, Assistant Professor, Institute of Geology, University of the Punjab, Lahore presented his research on “Use of RS/GIS for Visualizing Concentration of Sediments in the Near shore Environment” and then Dr. Arifa Lodhi, General Manager (SAR Wing) presented SUPARCO’s work in space applications in her presentation titled “SUPARCO’s Space Application Studies”. Official documentary of SUPARCO was played and it was very much appreciated by the audience. After that, Dr. Fazeel Mahmood Khan, Lecturer, Department of Physics, GC University, Lahore delivered presentation on “Super massive Black Holes in Galaxy Centers”. Lastly, Mr. Ehsan Saqib, GIS Development Specialist, The Urban Unit shared the details of a project under Government of the Punjab titled “A GIS based, Province wide e-governance solution electro mobile governance.” At the end, Member (Space

Electronics) Dr Muhammad Riaz Suddle addressed as the Chief Guest of the event. He emphasized the importance of Celebrating World Space Week and highlighted the significance of Space Applications in the field of space science and thanked the participants for their presence. The seminar was concluded by highlighting detail of events to be conducted in WSW.

b)

This was the second time a quiz competition was being held at SRDC-Lahore. A number of schools enthusiastically participated, each well prepared with the quiz material. A team of two students, from class 6th -8th, were allowed to participate from each school. Teachers and five students were allowed to accompany their team according to the seating capacity of the organized event.

Questions were asked from the Space Information Booklet which was made available on the website for download and a single copy of the same was also posted by courier to the invited schools. 60 % Questions were prepared from the Space Information Booklet and 40% questions were from the following topics:

i) Space aided search and rescue operations

ii) Deforestation and desertification monitoring through space/natural disaster monitoring through space

iii) Environmental pollution monitoring and mitigation

Quiz was conducted in the form of multiple choice questions which were prepared on power point slides for display. Competition was conducted in three rounds eliminating teams in each round so as to decide for the final three positions. First round had the option of skipping any one question out of those asked from the teams. Second round was time limited with two minutes per team answering as many questions as can be asked in the given slot. Third round had negative marking for the wrong answers. There were tie breaker questions also for teams scoring equal in any round.

It was a well organized event where members of the World Space Week Team were properly distributed and deputed for the tasks of registration, preparation and hosting of quiz, score keeping, refreshments, photography and venue arrangement.

c) In Lahore Water Rocket Teacher Training Workshop was held at NFC Park on 20th September 2012. Number of schools participated in teacher training session. On 6 October, 2012 practice session was held where we accommodated maximum number of students and gave them opportunity to test their rockets. Chief organizer of the event Major Mansoor Zamir was also present on both days. On practice session day students brought their own rockets and SRDC-L provided the launch facility for testing the design.

Water Rocket Competition was held on 7th October 2012, the rules for making and judgment were uploaded on SUPARCO website before the event. The winning criteria were to hit the target at a distance of 60m from launcher or drop near the target. During judgment stability of flight was also considered.

d) The motive of this event is to create awareness among the public about the activities of SUPARCO and role of space technology in our daily life. The Space Fair was celebrated for two days. It included following activities.

On the first day of Space Fair, Water Rocket Demonstration was carried out whereas competition was conducted on second day. Rest of the other activities were carried out on both days.

Space Fair was the major activity in context of WSW 2012. The event enjoyed a great number of spectators who showed their interest in almost all the activities. Event was well organized and disciplined. SUPARCO stall showed the SUPARCO’s public services like in agriculture or disaster management. Models of Satellite were also on display for the spectators. Seeing everything in physical form made it easy for them to develop a perception about Space. Model making was itself a great and successful show which attracted the audience and brought excitement for the students who had to explain their models about space to lay men. Kids and parents actively participated in the Fancy dress show and they were given prizes as well. English Biscuit manufacturers provided some refreshment for the audience. Crux of the show was Water rocket Competition which arose the excitement of people and kids. KSS also established their stalls of seismic simulator, crater making and ATM which were quite educative and new for audience. Refreshments were served to all the participants, teachers, Organizing team and the Security staff.

e) The event took place at Gulshan e Iqbal Park on the first day of the family fair. Over a dozen contestants from five different schools of the area participated in the event. Most popular costumes amongst the kids were of the Aliens & robots. One notable participant, dressed up to represent his idea of a SUPARCO Scientist. The kids paraded around the family fair arena to display their costumes. The whole event was covered by the designated official photographer. At the end, prizes were distributed amongst the children.

Model making competition was arranged at Gulshan-e-Iqbal Park Lahore along with Space Week Family Fair on 6th October 2012. The school students from 5th to 8th grade were invited to participate in the competition. The theme of the event was “Space for human safety and security”.

The event was comprehensively planned well before its start, so that it could be commenced in a disciplined and successful manner. It comprised of following activities:

• Reception, registration and facilitation of participants 1400-1530 hours.

• Opening of display area for visitors at 15:00 hours.

• Allocation of display area to each participant.

• Reception, Orientation and facilitation of Judges on their arrival.

• Refreshment was provided to Judges and participants at 1600hrs.

• The judges started the evaluation of the participating schools at 1615 hrs.

• Results compilation at 1715 hrs.

• Closing ceremony for distribution of participation certificates and announcement of position holder school teams at 1745 hrs.

• Safe departure of Judges, participants and Visitors from the venue at 1800hrs. g)

This was one of the main activities of World Space Week and a number of students from schools, colleges and universities participated for this event. The event was arranged in two separate time slots. First half of the day was for the declamation contest of school students and other half for college and university students.

Declamation contest for the schools was for students from class 8th to 10th / O levels. Students were allowed to participate in one category only (English /Urdu). Topics for the declamation were as follows:

Students from the colleges and universities were given different topics in English and Urdu with serious and humorous themes to select from. Jury Members were well experienced with declamation formats and gave valuable feedback to participating students. Speeches of the first prize winners of the declamation contest were delivered on the Prize Distribution Ceremony as well and were very much appreciated by the audience.

h) Astronomy Night was scheduled to be held on Monday 8th October 2012 in SRDC-L. The purpose of this event was sighting of celestial objects through high magnification telescopes. The event was organized in collaboration with following societies.

i. Khwarizmi Science Society (KSS). ii. Lahore Astronomical Society (LAST).

It was decided to arrange this event in Lawn of SRDC-L. Several meetings were arranged with representatives of KSS and LAST to discuss the event plan. Organizers of KSS and LAST were asked to visit the location and the layout plan was finalized in their presence. Seating arrangements of 250 people were made in the lawn. Multimedia and sound system was also made by the technical team. Refreshment arrangements were made for all the attendees and dinner arrangements were made for KSS and LAST organizers. Refreshments were served in the end.

i) Space awareness lectures are arranged every year during WSW to create awareness of outer space and the activities/achievement of SUPARCO.

Video clips consisting of interactive material about Space, Space Week and achievement/activities of SUPARCO were shown to the science students of grade 9-10 in all schools. After showing the videos a Q/A (question

answer) session was conducted and souvenirs were distributed to the student taking part in this Q/A session. Total time spent in one school to complete this activity was 2-2.5 hours.

Prize Distribution Ceremony was the last of the events held during the World Space Week. This ceremony was arranged to celebrate the achievements of students who won the competitions held during the week and to commemorate the efforts of World Space Week team.

Lt Gen (R) M. Maqbool Administrator Teach-A-Child Higher Secondary School System (TAC) was the chief guest of the ceremony. Prize Distribution Ceremony was held at SRDC-Lahore and conducted well with the planned schedule. First three position holders of various competitions held during the World Space Week were invited along with their teachers. SUPARCO documentary and a sum-up presentation of World Space Week, courtesy of the photographer at SRDC-L who captured great moments throughout the week, was presented during the ceremony. Winners of the Declamation Contest were also requested to deliver their speeches to the audience. Certificates and Prizes comprising of telescopes and space booklets were distributed to the winners by the Chief Guest, who enthusiastically supported the students and encouraged them to develop their interest in the field of space sciences and technology. At the end of the ceremony appreciation for the World Space Week team was made by calling out the names and contribution of team members thus officially closing the World Space Week. Ceremony was followed by a casual musical performance on guitar.

WORLD SPACE WEEK 2012

Peshawar Station

1. INTRODUCTION:

World Space Week was organized by SUPARCO Regional Office Peshawar at UET Peshawar campus from 06-11 Oct 2012. This was the third successive event in Peshawar as well as in UET since 2010. This year sky simulation at PIA Planetarium was added to the event list. Dr. Muhammad Shahzad Khan Khattak, Dir Clubs and Societies was the focal person from UET and has organized WSW 2012 with the help of student’s societies. Societies involved in the events are; American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), Institute of Industrial Engineers (IEE), Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), UET Media Club, Literary and Debating Society (LDS). Invitations to thirty schools were delivered through direct contact but only 10 schools participated in different events. In addition students from six departments of UET Peshawar participated in events.

2. SUMMARY OF EVENTS:

a)

Water rocket event is one of the most exciting events for students among WSW events. Water Rocket Teacher Training was organized at SUPARCO Regional Office Peshawar on 1st Oct 2012.

Water Rocket training was organized for the second time in Peshawar and for the first time in SUPARCO Regional officer Peshawar. Also this was the first ever WSW event in SUPARCO Regional Office Peshawar. Aim of this workshop was to impart training to the teachers i.e. how to make Water rocket and how to launch so that they can train their students for the competition. Five teachers from schools and five from UET Peshawar participated in Workshop.

b)

WSW 2012 activities started off with the impressive inauguration ceremony at UET Main Hall on 4th Oct 2012. Badr-I, Badr-II, Paksat-1R, and SLV model along with application projects posters were put on display for interest of students and faculty members.

Inauguration ceremony was attended by nearly 250 persons and started with a recitation of few verses from Holy Quran at 1000 Hrs. Syed Imtiaz Hussain Gilani, VC UET welcomed the participants and Chief Guest while Mr. Ayaz Aziz, Member (R&I) gave a talk about WSW in Pakistan and SUPARCO’s contribution in Space. Mr. Khalid Khan, Additional Secretary Higher Education, Govt of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was the chief guest. The ceremony concluded with the presentation of SUPARCO Shield to Chief Guest and UET Shield to Chief Guest and Member (R&I).

A short Seminar on “Space for Human Safety and Security” was organized at UET Main Hall and stated at 1200 Hrs after inaugural refreshments. The aim of this seminar was to create awareness among students about the space sciences and technologies and its importance for socio economic uplift of the country.

3. Dr. Muhammad Shahzad Khan Khattak, Assistant Professor Agriculture Department UET –Hydrological modeling of upper Indus basin and impact of Climate Changes on this region

Refreshments were served to all participants as well as to invited guest after the inauguration ceremony and seminar.

d) On 5th October 2012 Quiz Completion was organized at UET Main Hall by ASME Society. A total of 70 teams participated in the event from the invited schools and different department of UET. Eight teams were selected for quarter final through first round. The event was conducted using specialized software for Quiz on multimedia with already populated database.

Sky simulation was included in the WSW activities for the first time in Peshawar. Sky simulation was organized at PIA Planetarium Peshawar. Event was supervised and conducted by SUPARCO technical staff along with admin support of UET LDC club.

A two hours program plan was organized for invited schools. Each day program was held twice from 0900-1300 Hrs. Program included 15 min presentation about WSW, 15 min SUPARCO Video, 30 Min Selected Space Movie clips and 45 min PIA Planetarium sky simulation show. Details of the invited schools are listed below:

5th Oct 2012 – 25 students each from Frontier Children Academy and Police Public school attended the event.

To make this event more interesting 10 question were asked from the students in each group and SUPARCO pens, Space booklets etc were presented as gift to the students on correct answers.

f) Model making completion was organized on 8th Oct 2012 at UET Main Hall. Ten models were put on display. Approximately 150 students from UET and schools visited the models display.

Bilingual declamation contest was organized on 9th Oct 2012 at UET Main Hall. 25 students from schools and UET competed in both the categories which were judged by three judges.

Water rocket competition was organized on 9th Oct 2012 at SUPARCO regional office Peshawar. 19 teams from schools and UET department participated in competition. Criterion for the winner was to achieve max range in the allocated corridors.

WSW 2012 closing as well as Prize Distribution Ceremony was held at UET main Hall on 11th Oct 2012 and was attended by 150 students including winners. Ceremony was delayed by one day due to universities employees strike call on 10th Oct 2012.

Closing ceremony started with recitation of few verses from Holy Quran followed by welcome address by Dean Faculty of Engineering. Air Cdre (Retd) Arshad Hussain Siraj, Secretary SUPARCO was the Chief Guest and distributed prizes among the winners. VC UET Peshawar concluded the ceremony with vote of thanks to Secretary SUPARCO for selecting UET Peshawar for third consecutive year for hosting WSW activities. Prize kit provided to the individual winners / team includes the following items:

j) Space awareness walk was organized within UET premises after closing ceremony. Dean Faculty of Engg, VC UET, Secretary SUPARCO, SUPARCO Peshawar Technical staff, Dir Clubs, UET Faculty members, Winners and UET students participated in the event. This was the concluding event of the WSW 2012.

WORLD SPACE WEEK 2012

Quetta Station

1. INTRODUCTION

Like last year, this year VC BUITEMS was again invited by Chairman SUPARCO to jointly organize World Space Week 2012 at BUITEMS that was warmly accepted. .A two day event of SPACE FAIR & EXHIBITION was organized in collaboration with BUITEMS (Balochistan University of Information Technology, Engineering and Management Sciences). Mr. Ubaid Ahsan, AM SPARC Quetta and Mr. Muhammad Shah, Deputy Director, University Advancement & Financial Assistance were nominated as focal persons from SUPARCO and BUITEMS respectively. MoU was signed by both parties regarding the event plan prepared with mutual consent. A sum of PKR 115,000 as financial assistance from SUPARCO was transferred to BUITEMS in advance and remaining PKR 115,000 was decided to be transferred after the completion of activities.

On September 2012, AM SPARC Quetta visited SUPARCO HQs Karachi to attend Water Rocket training workshop to organize related activities in Quetta. Water Rocket teachers’ training workshop was conducted in BUITEMS to teach the teachers of the participating schools about water rocket making procedure. The workshop was very successful and an overwhelming response was received from the school teachers.

2. EVENT SUMMARY

a)

The Space Fair & Exhibition was a two day event which was inaugurated by the Chief Guest (VC BUITEMS) on October 09, 2012. Member SAR honored the SUPARCO team and the University with his presence during the two day event.

During the inauguration ceremony SUPARCO documentary was shown to the audience which gave them a detailed introduction regarding SUPARCO. Member SAR, being the nominated higher official from SUPARCO, gave the welcome address at the inauguration ceremony that was highly motivational and informative for the audience including Faculty, teachers, school students and their parents. He also announced the establishment of SUPARCO Regional Centre Quetta as promised during the previous World Space Week inauguration for the province of Balochistan to provide interaction and liaison with provincial Govt departments, organizations and universities for providing them Satellite Remote Sensing, GIS and Space Technology support in undertaking their projects.

After the inauguration ceremony, Member SAR & VC BUITEMS were escorted to the Expo Hall where the Fair & Exhibition was formally inaugurated. While visiting the SUPARCO exhibits & stalls, Member SAR briefed the VC regarding the exhibits in detail. Similarly, while visiting the university stalls the VC briefed the Member regarding projects & activities of university students. Refreshment break was also arranged in Expo Hall.

b) During the Water Rocket Competition all the participating teams launched two rockets as per the rules of competition, out of which the best one was selected for the scoring purpose.

Space Fair & Exhibition was open for the public on the second as well. Beside the Fair, on October 10, 2012 other important events including quiz competition, declamation contest were also held consecutively.

The prize distribution ceremony was held in which prizes (SUPARCO kits & telescopes) and certificates were distributed among the winners of the competitions. Certificates of participation were also distributed among the university volunteers as a token of appreciation from SUPARCO. Shields were given to the SUPARCO team including Member SAR and Dir SPARC Quetta from BUITEMS. Member SAR presented the model of SHEHPAR rocket and SUPARCO emblem as souvenirs to VC BUITEMS on behalf of SUPARCO.

Astronomy Night

• Astronomy night at BUITEMS (Thursday, October 11, 2012)

Initially it was planned to conduct this activity at Baluchistan University of information Technology and Management Sciences (BUITMS) but due to delay in the clearance/arrival of telescopes from the airport this could not be possible. However a lecture was delivered at BUITMS on the importance of Sky and different phenomena occurring in the sky. Audience remained captivated during the lecture after which a question answer session was conducted where the audience fully participated and different question were asked and several other things discussed. Student and teachers were also shown the meteorite recently recovered from Tharparker. A huge interest was observed from students and teachers who first time ever were looking at something that have come from skies.

• Astronomy night at SPARC, Quetta Office (Friday, October 12, 2012)

On Friday October 12, 2012, the telescope was setup at the rooftop of SPARC Dte, Quetta. Several dignitaries were invited on short notice. The response was very positive and the program was very successful in which demonstration of several sky phenomena was given live using the sky observation software and telescope. It was a clear dark night and most of the stars and planets were clearly visible from the rooftop of the building. Before the program was started, audience was shown planet Mars right after sunset in the western skies. A question - answer session was also carried out in between the talk. Finally planet Jupiter and its moon were viewed by the audience at around 09:30 pm. The audience was really excited when they observed 03 moons of the planet through the telescope. During the observation binary stars, constellations, pole star, motion of earth were discussed. A second session of demonstration and observation was also conduct with some army officials resided nearby the office.

• Visit of school (Saturday, October 13, 2012)

In order to take full benefit of the astronomy night team that came from Karachi, it was instructed by Member(SAR) to visit a school in the vicinity as part of the awareness program. Accordingly, a school (Islamabad Girls High School) was selected in coordination with BUITEMS. Two classes of students (9th and 10th) were seated in the hall in addition to teachers and Principal of the school. A lecture was given on SUPARCO related activities, sky observation and space. All the students and teachers showed great interest and requested for similar programs for their school in future. Several questions and queries of teachers and students were entertained. Students also showed their interest in meteorite shown to them.

Gilgit Baltistan

1. INTRODUCTION

Hasegawa Memorial Public School & College (HMPS&C) in collaboration with the Space Agency of Pakistan, Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO), celebrated World Space Week 2012 (WSW) in Karimabad Hunza, Gilgit Baltistan. The purpose of celebrating the WSW was to educate the public in general and students in particular about the challenges and opportunities posed by the space science in contemporary era. It was an initiative of exposing students to new horizons of thoughts that may facilitate a paradigm shift from a geo-centric thinking to a cosmic approach.

2. SUMMARY OF THE EVENTS ORGANIZED

a) Water Rocket Teachers Training (WRTP):

The first phase of the WSW 2012 started with WRTP on 15th Sep. In the first phase, students and teachers were trained about Water Rocket and accordingly 64 participants from across Gilgit Baltistan have been trained on 15th September, 2012. Deputy home secretary Gilgit Baltistan was the chief guest of the program. Notables from district Hunza-Nagar participated in the program. The opening ceremony was inaugurated with the local music. Vice president Karimabad Welfare Association, the Board of Governors of HMPS&C, inaugurated the program. The program was divided in two phases. The participants went to the classes for training. Rest of the audience and students of HMPS&C with the students from other schools continued the enjoying the program. At the end of the program students launched their designed water rockets.

b) In the second phase of the program Water Rocket Launching competition together with a speech competition were successfully organized on 25th September in the premises of HMPS&C. Deputy commissioner Hunza-Nagar was invited as chief guest. The program details are given below :

c) Space exhibition was organized on 6th & 7th Oct and students from various academic institutions from across Gilgit Baltistan visited exhibition. The overwhelming participation of general Public was also observed. 32 schools visited the exhibition and 20 different organizations attended the program

On 9th Oct, the closing ceremony of WSW was celebrated. Speaker Gilgit Baltistan provincial assembly, Mr.Wazir Bag was the chief guest and Brig (r) Hisamullah Bag, Ex-Vice president Ismaili National Council for Pakistan was the guest of honor. Around twelve thousand public attended the program. The program was started at 8:30 with a spacewalk of 5 KM. The pipe bands with local musicians were leading the walk. Almost 1500 students, ex soldiers men holding banners and cards participated in this walk. After the Space Walk, the cultural program with a space exhibition started at 11:00 in the polo ground which continued to 4:PM in the evening. The Q-sheet of the program is attached as Annex-C. Moreover, the five major news paper of Gilgit Baltistan gave coverage to our program. These papers are BANG-E-SAHAR, MUHASIB, K-2, SADAYAA GILGIT AND PAMER TIMES. SUJO HUNZO, a local TV channel of Hunza-Nagar District covered the programs. This channel was used to do the publicity of the overall program and it disseminated the news about the space week for one month from, 9th Sep to 9th Oct. Program details are given below:

Faisalabad Station

1. INTRODUCTION

The World Space Week-2012 was celebrated in Faisalabad from 4-6 October to create awareness about space sciences & technology & its applications for the benefit of humanity. The theme for WSW 2012 was “Space for Human Safety & Security”. Different activities were arranged by SUPARCO in Faisalabad with collaboration of University of Agriculture, Faisalabad (UAF), as part of WSW-2012, a three day event, which was celebrated from 4th of October, 2012 to 6th of October, 2012 in Faisalabad. The activities include inaugural ceremony, model making competition, poster display; Quiz Competition, Declamation Contest, Water Rocket Competition and Prize Distribution Ceremony. The SUPARCO celebrated WSW-2012 in Faisalabad at UAF along with its yearly Kissan Mela/Rabi Festival. This was the first time that a space related event had been organized in Faisalabad by SUPARCO. The event was comprehensively planned and coordinated in order to maximize the number of participants and attendance of general public, which was aligned with the objective to improve the awareness about SUPARCO and space technology. Both Government and private schools were invited to create a blend of students from different backgrounds.

The WSW-2012 activities started formally with an inaugural ceremony held at UAF on 4th of October, 2012. The chief guest of the occasion was Mr. Iqrar Ahmad Khan the Vice Chancellor of UAF. Mr. Abdul Ghafoor (DCM), the Director SPT, attended the event and represented SUPARCO.

The UAF main auditorium was house packed; students were sitting on staircases, who were enthusiastically chanting national slogans on patriotic songs. It was electrifying atmosphere with such a large audience. The ceremony started with the recitation of holy Quran and a Naat was recited. School children performed different skits related to space and universe, and it was an impressive performance by them, which could be confirmed from the loud sound of clapping they received from the audience. A shield was presented to the chief guest from SUPARCO by Mr. Abdul Ghafoor (DCM). A large number of students from different schools, UAF faculty members, representatives from different agriculture related companies, university students, school teachers, media personals attended the event.

b) This was the first time a quiz competition for world space week (WSW) was being held at UAF, Faisalabad. UAF “Quiz Club” society s organized the entire event and did coordination with participating schools. A number of schools enthusiastically participated, each well prepared with the quiz material. A team of two students, from class 6th-10th, were allowed to participate from each school. On the 5th of October, 2012 all participants took

part in a written test and first 06 teams were selected for the final competition that held on 06th of October, 2012. This method was used to scrutinize the teams to save time on the final day of the event. Teachers, students with their parents and students of UAF, Faisalabad were allowed to attend the event according to the seating capacity, which was completely filled and many were standing at the back.

c) This event was organized with the coordination and cooperation of Debating Society of UAF. On the first day of the event on 5th Oct, 2012 all participants delivered their speeches and only six (6 in Urdu and 6 in English) of them were scrutinized for next round. On the second day 6th Oct, 2012 scrutinized participants delivered their speeches and judgment for winners was made by the judges. d) After the inaugural ceremony the dignitaries visited the stalls of the schools on which models and posters were displayed. Schools were instructed to display and present their models/posters to general public for two days (4th & 5th of October), while the judges visited the stalls on the final day to determine the winners of the competition. The teachers and students enthusiastically participated in the event and their interest in SUPARCO, space technology, and WSW was immense with such an energy level that they were presenting and explaining from morning to evening to a large number of audiences who attended the event.

Water Rocket competition at Faisalabad was held at University of Agriculture Faisalabad. Before the competition Teacher Training Workshop was conducted by SRDC-L team. Details of the events held at Agriculture University are given in the table below.

Competition was started on 4 October at 2 pm. Every student was given the material required to make two water rockets. After distribution of material students were given one hour time to build the rockets. Once all the students finished making rockets, launch process was started. Every student was given the chance to launch both rocket and the best flight was considered for competition. According to the rules a target was set at a distance of 60m from launcher. Winning criteria was either to hit the target or

drop in the seven meter circle drawn around the target. The event was very well coordinated and organized by the water rocket team.

Bahawalpur Station

1. INTRODUCTION

World Space Week (WSW) is celebrated all over the world from 4th of October to 10th of October. This year SUPARCO organized WSW activities in 11 different cities. The World Space Week-2012 was celebrated in Bahawalpur from 4-6 October to create awareness about space sciences & technology & its applications for the benefit of humanity. The theme for WSW 2012 was “Space for Human Safety & Security”. Many activities were arranged by SUPARCO in Bahawalpur with collaboration of Islamia University, Bahawalpur (IUB), as part of WSW-2012, a three day event, which was celebrated from 8th of October, 2012 to 10th of October, 2012. These activities include Inaugural Ceremony, Space Walk, Model making competition, Poster display, Quiz Competition, Declamation Contest, Water Rocket Competition and Prize Distribution Ceremony. This report presents the details of the first day of WSW-2012 activities in Bahawalpur. This was the first time that a space related event had been organized in Bahawalpur by SUPARCO. The event was comprehensively planned and coordinated in order to maximize the number of participants and attendance of general public, which was aligned with the objective to improve the awareness about SUPARCO and space technology. Both Government and private schools were invited to create a blend of students from different backgrounds.

2. SUMMARY OF THE EVENTS ORGANIZED:

a) The WSW-2012 activities started formally with an inaugural ceremony held at the main Auditirium, Islamia University, Bahawalpur (IUB) on 8th of October, 2012. The chief guest of the occasion was the Corps Commander Bahawalpur, Lt. Gen. Muhammad Haroon Aslam and was presided over by Prof. Dr. Muhammad Mukhtar, the Vice Chancellor of IUB. Mr.Shakeel Zahid (DCM), Dy. Director General (GSC) Lahore was also on the stage to represent SUPARCO.

Mr. Shuja Uddin Ahmad Taimuri, A/DH (EM) FEMF Lahore gave the presentation on the event, i.e. World Space Week, Space activities going on in the World and the activity carried out by SUPARCO, which was confirmed from the loud sound of clapping received from the audience. Mr. Shakeel Zahid, Dy. Director General (GSC) Lahore, explained the activities of SUPARCO in Satellite launching and operation. Professor Dr. Muhammad Mukhar, VC, IUB, delivered the welcome speech and acknowledged the efforts made by SUPARCO in celebrating this event in such a far flung place. Lt. Gen. Muhammad Haroon Aslam, Corps Commander Bahawalpur, in his speech encouraged the students to get maximum benefits of the event by participating in all the activities enthusiastically. At the end, a shield was presented to the chief guest from SUPARCO by Mr. Shakeel Zahid, Dy. Director General (GSC) Lahore. A large

number of students from different schools, IUB faculty members, university students, school teachers, media personals attended the event.

After the inauguration ceremony, space walk was arranged which was led by Professor Dr. Muhammad Mukhtar, Mr. Shakeel Zahid, Mr. Shuja Taimuri, event coordinator from SUPARCO, Dr. Asghar Hashmi, even coordinator from IUB, students from different schools, IUB faculty members, university students, school teachers, media also participated in the walk.

c) This was the first time a quiz competition for world space week (WSW) was being held at IU, Bahawalpur. Dramatic Club, Islamis University Bahawalpur helped us organizing all the event and coordination with participating schools. A number of schools enthusiastically participated, each well prepared with the quiz material. A team of two students, from class 6th-10th, were allowed to participate from each school. On the 9th of October, 2012 all participants took part in a written test and first 06 teams were selected for the final competition that held on 10th of October, 2012. It was a well organized event where members of the World Space Week Team and Dramatic Society, Islamia University, Bahawalpur were properly distributed and deputed for the tasks of registration, preparation and hosting of quiz, score keeping, refreshments and venue arrangement.

d) This was one of the main activities of World Space Week and a number of students from different schools participated for this event. This event was organized with the coordination and cooperation of Dramatic Society of IUB. On the first day of the event on 9th Oct, 2012 all participants delivered their speeches and only six (6 in Urdu and 6 in English) of them were scrutinized for next round. e) Stalls were organized for schools in which models and posters were displayed. Schools were instructed to display and present their models/posters to general public for two days (8th & 9th October), while the judges visited the stalls on the final day to determine the winners of the competition. On the 2nd day of the WSW events in Bahawalpur, Commissioner Bahawalpur Division Mr. Muhammad Khan Khichi visited the different stalls of schools and SUPARCO stall and appreciated the efforts made by IUB and SUPARCO to arrange such an event in Bahawalpur

Water Rocket Teacher Training workshop was held before the competition day. The competition was started on 9 October at 4pm. According to the rules all the required materials were provided by SUPARCO. Rules uploaded on the website of SUPARCO were strictly followed. Administration of university of Bahawalpur took keen interest in the event. Commissioner of Bahawalpur participated as chief guest of the event. Vice chancellor of University was present at the site throughout the event and enjoyed it very much. Deputy Director General Muhammad Shakeel Zahid was also present on the day of event. All the special guests were given the rockets to launch as amateur. Events held and the names of winners are given in the tables below.

WORLD SPACE WEEK 2012

Hyderabad Station

1. INTRODUCTION

Being the national space agency of Pakistan, SUPARCO has taken the responsibility of spreading awareness among the general population of Pakistan about the importance of space technology in everyday life. Keeping in view this objective, SUPARCO has been celebrating World Space Week since 2005. This year, the celebrations were organized in 10 different cities of Pakistan. In this regard, HR Dte Gen was given the responsibility of celebrating WSW 2012 in Hyderabad.

World Space Week 2012 was celebrated at Hyderabad Station in collaboration with Dept. of Telecommunication Engineering, MUET, Jamshoro. It was a two day event, dated 9th and 10th October, 2012. A pre-celebration event was held on 19th September, 2012 for training the school teachers in making water rockets for Water Rocket Competition.

2. SUMMARY OF EVENTS

a) Water Rocket Teachers’ Training Workshop in Hyderabad was held on 19 September 2012 at MUET, Jamshoro. Registrar MUET, Dr. Tuaha Hussain Ali and DH SITT Lt. Col. Syed Taqi Ahmed were among the chief guests of the workshop. The workshop was inaugurated in M.D. Makhdoom Hall in which tutorial presentation was delivered. The making and launching of water rockets took place at Sports Ground, MUET, Jamshoro.

The formal inauguration of WSW 2012 celebrations at Hyderabad Station was held on 9th October, 2012 at Main Auditorium, MUET, Jamshoro. From SUPARCO, DG, SPARC, Mr. Shafiq Ahmed was the Guest of Honour. Prof. Dr. A. Q. K. Rajput, Vice Chancellor, MUET, Jamshoro was the Chief Guest of the Inaugural ceremony who formally inaugurated the World Space Week celebrations held on 09 - 10 Oct 2012. The inauguration ceremony started with recitation of holy verses from Quran followed by the welcome speech by the Registrar, MUET, Jamshoro, Prof. Dr. Tauha Hussain Ali. The ceremony was followed by two parallel competitions; Declamation Contest and Water Rocket Competition.

c) Declamation contest was held at Main Auditorium Building, MUET, Jamshoro. Students from various private and public schools presented their arguments on the World Space Week 2012 theme “Space for Human Safety and Security”. They suggested that greater emphasis shall be made on usage and application of space technology for the benefits and security of human beings. Speeches delivered by students reflected their sound knowledge related to space technologies and their applications.

d) Water Rocket competition was held at Sports Ground, MUET, Jamshoro. 19 Teams from different Schools participated in the event. The participants were already trained by their teachers who had participated in the Water Rocket Teacher’s Training Workshop. The teams prepared their rockets from the recyclable inexpensive materials easily available in our daily life. After the preparation of the rockets they were launched at the launching area. A lot of students came to see the launching of rockets. They showed interest and enthusiasm in the Water Rocket Competition which helped them understand the rocket science.

On 10th October 2012, a grand “Space Fair” marked the second day of WSW 2012 celebrations at MUET, Jamshoro. The chief guests were Vice Chancellor MUET, Dr. Abdul Qadir Khan Rajput and DG SPARC, SUPARCO, Mr. Shafiq Ahmed.

The fair included many exciting things such as SUPARCO Stall exhibiting models of different rockets and satellites, Space Photography Stall where an astronaut model and a space board cut out attracted not only young school students but families as well for taking memorable pictures, Kids Arena having games, Food Stalls, Space Movies Theater, Telescope Setup for space observations arranged by Hyderabad Astronomers Society, and Telecom Department Projects. Pakistan Science Foundation also exhibits the Moving Planetarium at MUET auditorium which highly attracted the students of all ages.

Water Rocket Demonstration was also done in Space Fair. SITT team explained the construction and launching of water rockets at their assigned stall. Water rockets with LEDs were also displayed at the stall. Behind the stall, the practical flights of parachute water rockets with overhead Thai style launcher were displayed which were greatly appreciated by the spectators. It was the first experience of the people of Hyderabad to watch a water rocket flight with parachute recovery system which was quite appreciated.

f) Model making competition was also arranged as part of the Space Fair. Twelve teams from different private and public schools had initially registered for the competition out of which nine teams exhibited their models on the World Space Week 2012 theme “Space for Human Safety and Security”.

Closing ceremony at 03:00 pm marked the official ending of World Space Week 2012 celebrations. It included prize distribution ceremony where prizes were distributed to the winners of all competitions. The Guest of honour, Dr. Shafiq Ahmed, DG, SPARC, SUPARCO highlighted the need of peaceful use of space and its importance to create awareness among the youth. The Chief Guest, Prof. Dr. M. A. Uqaili, Pro-Vice Chancellor, MUET shared his esteemed thoughts with the audience and emphasize that such events should be on continual basis.

Abbottabad Station

1. INTRODUCTION

SUAPRCO Celebrated WSW 2012 in Abbottabad with the Collaboration of COMSATS Institute of Information Technology (CIIT) Abbottabad Campus from 8-9 Oct 2012.

2. SUMMARY OF EVENTS

a) World Space Week 2012 celebrations commenced with a formal inauguration ceremony in main auditorium of CIIT, Abbottabad. Space-related professionals, university professors, representatives of public and private sector organizations, delegates, students and teachers attended the inaugural ceremony. Syed Zuhair Bokhari, Deputy Director General SPARC, Islamabad at the ceremony highlighted SUPARCO’s services in satellite-based resource management, hazards monitoring & space sciences, tele- education, and tele-medicine. Ijaz Ahmed Director Agriculture, SPARC Islamabad gave 20 min presentation regarding SUPARCO role in strengthening Agriculture Sector followed by 10 min Q/A session. M.Iftikhar Bhatti General Manager highlighted SUPARCO role in managing disaster Activities followed by 10 min Q/A session. Closing remarks was given by Director CIIT Dr.Khan Gul Jadoon. Later DDG SPARC along with Director CIIT and Faculty members visited SUPARCO stall.

In order to exhibit space science applications in different sectors, stall was setup. Satellite Models were also displayed. Faculty Members, Students and visitors showed great interest in knowing more about the space technologies and their applications. Documentaries on SUPARCO and space were also shown. Students from schools were keen to know about various satellites that were launch by SUPARCO. They were also keen to know how space technologies can help layman of Pakistan.

SUPARCO’s team organized Water Rocket training camp for students on 8th October at CIIT campus. At this camp students were taught how to make water rockets. Later, these students took part in the water rocket competitions held during WSW 2012.

Water rocket proved to be a striking activity in arousing and developing students’ curiosity and extended the horizon of learning and experience beyond science. The students showed keen interest in the event and applied their scientific concepts to make water rockets. Students also came up with decorated water rockets made of plastic bottles and metallic machine-made nozzles. Different types of launchers including an automated pneumatic launcher were used. Designers of water rockets which covered the longest distance were declared winners and awarded prizes.

d) A bilingual Essay Writing Competition was held on 08 October 2012 .The topic for the English and Urdu essay writing competition was “Space for Human Safety and Security”. Essays were judged on the basis of creativity and expression of the idea or story that students associated with the theme besides language and grammar.

e) Poster making and sketching competition was held. All the paintings and sketches were displayed during space fair and exhibition. A large number of visitors and participants took keen interest in the poster display and appreciated the art work of young students. Students were asked to explain the concept of their drawing / posters to the judges. Winners were given prizes.

Bilingual declamation contest was held in CIIT, Auditorium .The theme of the contest was “Space for Human safety and Security”. School, college and university students participated in the competition. They expressed their ideas about the importance of space sciences for human safety and security. Students gave speeches on the topic both in English and Urdu languages. Winners in each language were given prizes.

g) Quiz competition was held among different teams. The questions were on space technology and its uses. Prizes were distributed among winners.

The chief guest at the closing ceremony of the World Space Week 2012 at CIIT, Abbottabad was Brig Syed Khushnood Hussain Commandant Bloch Regimental Centre. Closing Ceremony started with the recitation of few verses from The Holy Quran. Syed Zuhair Bokhari Deputy Director General SUPARCO gave the closing address followed by Brig Khushnood Hussain address to the audience. Final prize distribution was the last event of the WSW activities .Later there was exchange of souvenirs among CIIT, Abbottabad and SUPARCO.
