INTRODUCTION

A standard atmosphere is essential in aeronautics asa stidard of reference in evaluating the performmceof aircraft and in calibrating altimetem. The standardatmosphere now in general use in the United States wasofficially adopted in 1925 by a group of Governmentorganizations intmcsted in aeronautics. II’or a morecomplete discussion of the dd.ails of establish@ thisstandard atmosphere see Technical Reports Nos. 147,218, nnd 246 (references 1, 2, and 3).

The tables especially convenient for the use of thestandard atmosphere in calibrating sMimetens iregiven in Technical Report No. 246 (reference 1), butunfortunately that report is out of print. To makethese essential tables available a reprint in some formis believed advisable. Advantage is taken to makecertain desirable revisiops and particularly to extendthe altitude range of the tables from 50,000 to 80,000feet.

It is to be noted that exprcsaion (6) for altitudein the standard atmosphere and (9) for actual altitudedifhr in that the mean temperature term nnd the nirpressure P. have fixed values in the first case nnd nrebased upon, or me observed values in the second cnse.Formula (6) does not readily lend itself to computingdifferences in altitude in the standard rkmosphere inthe cases where P. cMers from the standard sea-levelpressure, but this computation is unnecessary whentables such m those given in this report are nvailnble.

DESCRIPTION OF THE TABLES

Table I.—Altitudes are given at pressure intervnlsof 0.1 millimeter of mereury in the range 20 to 200millimeters of mercury and at intervals of 0.2 milli-meter of mercury in the range 200 to 790 millimetersof mercury. The values given in the table are nccumtewithin 1 foot at the lower altitudes and within 2 feetat the higher altitudes.

Table _lI.-Altitudes are given at pressure intervnlsof 0.01 inch of mercury in the mmge 0.8 inch to 31.09inches of meroury. The accuracy of this table is thesame ns that of table I.

Table 111.—The pressures in inches of mercury nndmillimeters of mercury nnd also the nir temperatureare given for every 500-foot interval in the range— 1,000 i% 50,000 feet and for every 1,000-foot intervnlup to 80,000 feet. The mean temperature of the nireohmm below the nltitude k given for each of thesealtitudes up to 50,000 feet. The values of the pres-sures are rounded off from computations extendingto sir significant figures in each cnse, nnd for thisreason it will be found that the pressure-s in inches nndin millimeters do not rLhvrLysexactly correspond. Thetemperatures and mean temperatures are rounded offfrom vfdue9 extending to six significant figures.

COMPUTATION OF ALTITUDE FROM PRESSURE ANDTEMPERATURE OBSERVATIONS

True or actual altitude above the ground level isnot given by the altimeter calibrated to the stnndnrdatmosphere even if all instrumental corrections hnvebeen applied and the altimeter hns been ndjusted soM to read zero at the ground level. The error remnin-ing is due to the fact that the actual mean tempern.ture ,of the air column extending from the ground to thelevel of the aircraft differs in general from the memtemperature assumed for this altitude in the stnndnrdatmosphere. In computing altitudes accurately sev-eral equivalent methods may be used; one, in which ncorrection is evaluated and applied to the altitudeobtained from the altimeter reading as indicated informula (12) and another which is preferable, in whichthe computation is mnde directly, using formuk (9).In either case it is seen that the actual menn tempera-

tum of the air column must be evaluated. Carryingout the necessary computations in flight is usuallyan impractical procedure, so that for flight use approxi-mate methods have been developed. In these methodsthe altimeter indication, corrected for instrumentalerrors, and the observed free-air temperature are usedto enter abbreviated tables, or preferably a computer,in order to obtain a value more nearly approximatingthe true altitude. The discussion here will be restrickdto the more accurate method, based on the use offormula (9).

To obtain the actual mean temperature of the aircolumn, observations of the temperature of the fiekair and the corresponding air pressure P must beavailable at a number of levels between the ground andthe upper level. The air temperatures should beplotted against corresponding values of log P or nquantity proportional to log P. Altitude in anisothermal atmosphere, such as given in tables in theSmithsonian Meteorological Tables (reference 5), or inB. S. Aeronautical Instrument Circular No. 3 (refer-

POence 6) is given by the expression K log ~ which k pro-

portional to log P, and may in some cases be convenientto use. The curve thus obtained is subdivided intoequal divisions of log P or the quantity proportionalto it. The number of divisions is determined largelyby the number of observations and the accuracy of thedata. The arithmetic mean of the air temperatures atthe middle of each log P division, formula (13), givesthe actual mean temperature.

Substituting the mean temperature (ii degreescentigrade absolute) so obtained, together with theupper and lower level air pressures, into equation (9),or its equivalents (10) or (11), enables the actual aM-tude above the ground level to be computed. Thealtitude above sea level is the altitude above theground plus the elevation of the ground above. sealevel.

It should be noted that the air pressure at the groundlevel ia required at a point beneath the airplane at thetime at which the air pressure is observed in the air-craft. In general, this vrdue can be obtained only byinterpolation from observations of atmospheric pres-sure at iixed stations. The interpolation will have tobe made to secure the value at the same time and at theproper point since the air pressure varies with time andplace, and a reduction will also have to be made to theproper elevation, since the observed values will beordinarily for points at elevations diflering with eachother and from that at the ground level below theaircraft. The procedure in mrddng the interpolationsis obvious. The process of the reduction to the properelevation is, in the final analysis, the same as computing

the altitude accurately, using formula (9). In practice, the situation is usually such that no sensible error isintroduced if the reduction is made by us@ the alti-tude-pressure tables of the standard atmosphere thusneglecting the effect of the difference in the actual andstandard mean temperature.
