Every year thousands of people die, due to wheather related problems. This has been a particular problem in Europe over the last few years. It can happen in both winter and in summer. Let’s examine the causes for a moment.

The year 2003 was a time of extreme cold in the winter. Extreme, that is by European standards. In Britain alone, the number of people who died from cold-related illnesses was described as ‘shameful’. Nearly twenty-five thousand people died from illnesses such as strokes, heart attacks, bronchitis, flu and pneumonia. Each of these deaths were though to have been caused by the cold weather. A campaign called ‘The cold can kill’ was launched to give people advice on how to survive the effects of t he cold wheather and freezing temperatures.

In the summer of t he same year, around twenty-three thousand people died in Europe due to the sizzling temperatures. France was particulary badly hit, with nearly fifteen thousand death which were related to the sweltering heat. In Britain, the number of heat-related death was much lower than the number of winter deaths. Even so, with temperatures reaching 38oC, the government issued advice to people on how to protect their health. This advice warned that it only took two consecituve days of high temperatures to have significant effects on people’s health. It said that people who became overheated and dehydrated ran the risk of irreversible damage to the body or even death.

Why is the Internet so addicted ? Two reasons: information and freedom. People go online to get information (music, news, stock prices, etc). Logging onto the Internet is like a kid going to a toy store; there is so much to do and explore that once you get in, you never want to leave. People also go online because the Internet offers freedom to do whatever they want, to say whatever they want and to be whoever they want.

This could have a negative effect since people will act in certain ways and say certain things that they otherwise wouldn’t do in real life. Furthermore, because the Internet offers so much freedom, you can find your ideal self much easier, but it’s not the same as your social self. The difference is due to you talking to a computer screen and you talking to a real person. Thus, the experiences we encounter on the Internet are not the same as the ones we encounter in real life.

Even though our overt use of the Internet can cause a conflict between your virtual self and your social self, many still excessively rely on the Internet for their activities. As a result of information and freedom, the Internet has become an unbreakable addiction for individuals and society. Computers are as common as televisions in households; in addition, laptops and Internet-ready cell phones enable the Internet to travel with us.

“By 2000 it was estimated that the number of adults using the Internet exceeded 100 million in the United States alone” (The Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition). We believe that the Internet experience is the same as real life experience, but it’s not. Although the Internet has many benefits, it also separates us from others while causing many unruly behaviors in the process.

1. What is the text tells about ?2. Why many people use the internet ?3. What’s disadvantages from using the internet ?4. So, what should you do about “using internet” after read this text ?

Now, television seem so important for our life. But, spending too many hours watching television, consumes the precious time that can rather be spent in fruitful and healthy activities like exercise or reading. It also uses up the time that you can rather spend with your family and friends. Chatting with your near ones, spending time with your close ones is a better expenditure of time than in watching TV.

The children of today watch television for long hours. Many a time, they spend their evenings watching their favorite programs on TV. At times they stay up late to watch films on TV. This activity adds to their sedentary hours. The addiction to television deprives them of their time to play.

Children should rather engage in physical activities during the evenings. They should go to the open spaces to play with friends or spend time reading some good books. Moreover, watching television is detrimental to one’s eyesight. These activities can help them live a healthier living.

So, i think , television is one means of recreation but its excessive use is detrimental to one’s physical and mental health.

Having spent most of my life living off of junk food. Junk food is so practical food for many people. I was pretty shocked when I started learning about what goes into the produce we consume every day from the grocery store.

Most of the produce you would buy at the grocery store has been genetically modified to be more appealing to the customer. But, evidence suggests that genetically modified food can be harmful to your health. There are very few regulations on genetically modified food, and there aren’t any long term studies on how they affect human health. About 70% of the food you pick up at the grocery has been genetically modified.

Also, there are many types of insecticides used on produce, that are potentially harmful to your health. Farmers, nowadays, do not use the proper crop rotation when growing their produce. Crop rotation means: The successive planting of different crops on the same land to improve soil fertility and help control insects and diseases. The by-product of no crop rotation is that food in general is much less nutritious and raises a need for more insecticides to be used.

I don’t crave junk food or sugary snacks anymore. I know other people too, who have noticed the same effects from switching to an organic diet.

1. Do you like junk food ?2. Why is junk food is considered dangerous in this life?3. What’s the meaning of “crop rotation” ?4. Do you agree with this text ? if yes, what should you do ?

Last night I was walking home next to the river thames, when something strange happened to me. It was late at night and I’d had a long and difficult day at work. There was a large full moon in the sky and everything was quiet. I was tired and lonely and I’d just had a few pints of beer in my local pub, so I decided to stop by the riverside and look at the moon for a while. I sat on some steps very close to the water’s edge and looked up at the big yellow moon and wondered if it really was made of cheese. I felt very tired so I closed my eyes and after a few minutes, I fell asleep.

When I woke up, the moon had moved behind a cloud and it was very dark and cold. The wind was blowing and an owl hooted in a tree above me. I rubbed my eyes and started to get up, when suddenly I heard a splash. I looked down at the water and saw something. Something terrible and frightening, and unlike anything I’d ever seen before. Something was coming out of the water and moving towards me. Something green and strange and ugly. It was a long green arm and it was stretching out from the water to grab my leg. I was so scared that I couldn’t move. I’d never been so scared in my whole life. The cold green hand was moving closer and closer when suddenly there was a blue flash and a strange noise from behind me. Someone jumped onto the stairs next to me. He was wearing strange clothes and he had a crazy look in his eyes. He shouted “Get Back!” and pointed something at the monster in the water. There was a bright flash and the monster hissed and disappeared.

I looked up at the man. He looked strange, but kind. “Don’t fall asleep by the river when there’s a full moon”, he said “The Moon Goblins will get you.” I’d never heard of moon goblins before. I didn’t know what to do. “Who… who are you?” I asked him. “You can call me… The Doctor.” He said. I was trying to think of something else to say when he turned around and said, “Watch the stars at night, and be careful of the full moon”. I was trying to understand what he meant, when there was another blue flash and I closed my eyes. When I opened them again, he had gone.

I couldn’t believe what had happened. What on earth were Moon Goblins, and who was the mysterious Doctor? And why had he saved me? I was determined to find the answers to these strange questions. I stood up, looked at the moon and quickly walked home.

"Koko, where are you?" Hamid called softly to his cat.      "He may have wandered to the harbour," said Hamid's friend, Muchtar.     Soon, the boys were at the harbour's gate, marked 'Gate 6', of Priok Harbour. Two policemen were guarding the gate. The boys moved quietly so that the policemen would not see them. The boys knew the policemen would chase them away if they saw them.     The boys knew Koko was somewhere neat the gate because they had heard him meowing. The sound seemed to have come from a taxi that was parked near by. Hamid and Muchtar saw two men standing beside the taxi. The men were talking in low tones. Then, one of them opened the carboot, and Hamid saw Koko crouching among some bags.      Not long after that, the men left. Hamid quickly ran to the taxi. Finding the boat unlocked, Hamid lifted the lid. What a shock! There were bags of explosive! At the moment, Hamid heard the men coming back. He swept Koko into his arms and ran back to where Muchtar was keeping watch.     "Those men are smugglers trying to bring explosive into the harbour," Hamid whispered to Muchtar.     "What shall we do?" asked Muchtar fearfully.     "We must alert the policemen at the gate," Hamid said. The boys moved cautiously until they reached the gate. Hamid told the policemen what he had seen. The policemen did not really believe him, but they went with the boys to the taxi. The policemen were just in time to see the men taking the bags of explosive out of the boot.     The policemen quickly stopped the men and handcuffed them.
