The free dental clinic was held from 6 to 18 August 2018 in the disadvantaged communities of the Cape

West Coast in South Africa. We visited more rural communities which included the following towns;

1. Diazville Community Hall, Saldanha bay, 6-7 August

2. Langebaan Thusong Centre, Langebaan, 8 August

3. Louwville Community Hall, Vredenburg, 10-11 August

4. Steenberg Cove Hall, Saint Helena bay, 13-14 August

5. Hopefield Thusong Centre, Hopefield, 15-16 August

6. Velddrift Town Halll, Velddrift, 17-18 August

This is a private initiative sponsored by Dr. J.F. Joshua and his colleges, Foundation(Stichting) Nieuwe

Steen, The Malgas Lions, volunteers and all its sponsors.

This was our 6th year running and we extracted a record number of teeth, 6994 in 2 weeks time. Together

with 6 dentists, 2 oral hygienists and 40 volunteers the clinic of 2018 was a big success. We helped 1296

patients, treated 300 abscesses, placed 251 fillings and did 259 oral hygiene cleanings. Everyone received

pain medication and got antibiotics if necessary. A total of 1696 dental gift packs was made and handed

out which contained 5 toothbrushes,10 toothpastes and information folders. The Lions Club also made

about 2000 food packages that was handed out to patients and volunteers. All this was made possible by

the generous donations from our sponsors and dental patients in Holland.

The clinic commenced on the 6th of August until the 18th. During this time we treated 85 patients less than

in 2017 but extracted 1138 more teeth, placed 155 more fillings and did 110 more oral hygiene cleanings.

THE FREE DENTAL CLINIC and COLGATE unite to Educate the local Grade R’s.

The Colgate initiative in conjunction with us spent a week from 13 to 16 August 2018 in the West Coast visiting all local primary schools and giving preventative education to 5084 grade R learners.

The main goal was to teach the children all about oral hygiene and how to look after their teeth. All the children were also given 2 Colgate toothbrushes and 1 Colgate toothpaste. The education side of it is of high importance to the little once, as most of them are sadly unaware of dental care.

All learners were given the opportunity to be seen by a professional for screening, which was conducted in the COLGATE mobile dental bus.

provincial clinic in the area.

The Free Dental Clinic has grown significantly and we now cover more towns and provide more free

services to the disadvantaged community members of the Cape West Coast. We also are getting more

hurdles and bridges to cross as we are expanding. Certain groups feel threaten is this regard because

they have forgotten that this outreach programme is about the poor and disadvantaged people and that

they are not the centerpoint.

We provide free blood pressure measurements, blood sugar levels checks, tooth extractions, fillings,

oral hygiene and preventative procedures to all patients attending the clinic and we also hand out small

food parcels and dental amenities for the members of the community that attend the clinic.

The Cape West Coast is still a forgotten area and still only one government dentist and one oral

hygienist service the whole area. Luckily the provincial portable dental bus is up and running but it’s on a

rotation cycle.

The local provincial dental clinic can’t deal with the whole West Coast region on its own, that’s why the

backlog is so big. Also they treat very little people when they do see patients that is why many people

still have lots of dental problems. Many people still live in poverty and can’t afford the expensive dental

treatments.

Patient load stayed steady over the years but the amount of extractions increased. This is an

indication that very little preventative measures are in place at schools and grass root levels.

In 2018 patients came as far from Citrusdal. People also hitchhiked from the Koringberg district to the

Hopefield clinic. Also people from other municipal areas visited the free dental clinic which included,

Redelinghuys, Aurora and Mamre. The majority of the people still came from Dwarskersbos, Hopefield,

Kemfos, Laaiplek, Laingville, Langebaan, Langebaan-weg, Paternoster, Piketberg, Saldanha, St.

Helena bay, Stompneus bay, Velddrif and Vredenburg.

Our team comprised of volunteers from all walks of life whom sacrificed their free time to help ensure

the phenomenal success of this program. The cost of the dental materials, food supplies and dental

amentias are extremely high and it is only through ongoing donations of funds towards the materials

and supplies that we can continue to offer the complete service to our people that cannot afford these

services on a daily basis.

During 2018 we had to pay R44 000 to have our donated shipment of materials and amenities release

by Customs at Cape Town harbor. Any assistance with the shipping / transport of material would also

be of great help.

Through several cash donations we could purchase a functional hydrolic chair, a portable dental unit

and a portable suction unit. We also got sponsored a big autoclave.

R10 000 handed over by Paternoster Restaurant and Lodge, They donated R23 000 in total.

Our other big financial sponsors was Duferco(R35 000), Tronox(R10 000), Sea Harvest(R10 000),

Funky Lemon(R10 000), West Coast Racing(R5 000), and Ruan Tolken(R5 000). A total amount of

R 100 000,00 (€ 6 666,00) was donated by all our sponsors, charity drives and donors but the bulk of

expenses was covered by Foundation Nieuwe Steen.

If we should convert all procedures done,

The total expenses were about R 2 027 400,00 (€ 135 160,00):

*6994 extractions @ R 250 = R 1 748 500,00

*251 fillings @ R 750 = R 188250

*259 oral cleanings @R 350 = R90650

Everyone that visited the clinic got the following free amenities:

A Dental package consisting of 5 toothbrushes, 20 tubes of toothpaste, a denture box and a

denture brush and dental information folders.

All patients received two hotdogs, fruit and juice before treatment.

Dr. Joseph Joshua has been awarded a Presidential Award in the category Compassion. “Presidential

recognizes the work you perform both in the surgery and beyond. We value your commitment to

educating communities on the importance of Dental Hygiene in addition to all the time you spend in our

impoverished communities. “ As a Presidential Award winner, Dr. Joshua received an Award

Certificate, a Presidential Shirt (Madiba Shirt) and an exclusive invite to join Presidential at a VIP event.

The Shirt was a creation for and with President Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela. Various shirts have since

been created and worn by some of the greatest men of our time, and continue to project confidence

and individuality when worn by men of influence today.

Dr. Joseph Joshua is the latest recipient of the prestigious Lions Louis Volks Humanitarian Award. It is

given to those who give dedicated and distinguished service to the community.

Presented by Lions Clubs International District 410A it is a fitting tribute to his caring concern for others. The humanitarian award commemorates the vision and service of Past District Governor Louis Volks whose efforts led to the founding of Lionism in Southern Africa.
