After a long, cold winter, it is nice to enjoy some warmer weather. Speaking of warmth, we are pleased to have our newly constructed biomass facility operable. This state-of-the-art feature allows us to burn locally supplied wood chips, in lieu of oil, at a projected cost savings of approximately $300,000 per year.

We have a number of back-up fuel options on hand, but are extremely satisfied with what this new plant provides our patients, employees, visitors and volunteers.

Two other exciting recent developments at Androscoggin Valley Hospital involve collaboration with Memorial Hospital of North Conway, a MaineHealth member. This past spring, Memorial began providing a new Wound Care Clinic in Berlin. Appointments are available Tuesdays in the lower level of the AVH Professional Center. In addition, two nurse practitioners from their facility began seeing patients in a new diabetes clinic located in the 2-North area of AVH. Patti Duprey had previously seen diabetic patients at our hospital, but due to family commitments, she is no longer travelling to Berlin. We thank her for the great service she provided.

Great things are happening here at AVH, and we thank you for being an exciting part of our growth. If you haven’t visited us lately, stop by today!

Yours in good health,Russ KeeneAVH CEO

E very cough is annoying, but it does not always have to

be a cause for alarm. When we’re sick, it is a natural reflex to cough. That is how the body expels bacteria from the lungs and clears irritants from the airway. Coughs can even linger for weeks after a cold or respiratory infection.

A chronic cough—one that lasts for eight weeks or more—is different. It should be treated as a serious condition that requires a visit to the doctor.

Chronic coughs can have many causes. Some of the most common reasons are smoking, asthma and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), a condition in which acid from the

stomach backs up into the throat.

Upper airway cough syndrome is an umbrella term that describes conditions that inflame the upper airways to cause a cough. Sinus infections and allergies that cause the mucus to drip into the throat are examples.

Other conditions that can cause chronic cough include COPD, a disease that prevents enough air from flowing in and out of the lungs, and chronic bronchitis.

A chronic cough can cause fatigue—because of the energy it takes to cough and related sleeplessness— and may cause headaches, chest pain and sweating. Doctors

typically aim to diagnose and treat the cause, rather than the cough itself. Tests may include a chest or sinus X-ray, lung-function tests and a mucus analysis. A doctor will also try to determine if an allergen or pollutant is causing the irritation.

The benefits of quitting smoking begin almost the second you put down your last cigarette. Twelve hours after quitting, carbon monoxide levels in the blood drop to normal. Within three months,

circulation and lung function improve.

A year from the last cigarette, a smoker’s cough will generally recede, and the risk of coronary heart disease is half that of a continuing smoker. At the five- and

10-year marks, the risk for certain cancers drops to half that of a current smoker.

Quitting does not have to be done alone. Your doctor can help you develop a personal-ized plan.
