Mission Statement

Replacing Water Pumps in Rural Villages Togo, West Africa

Our Latest ProjectWest Kara Region, Togo, West Africa 2014-2015Water Pump Replacement Project Background

This project was made possible through very generous donations for Rudolf Greiwing GmbH and FaherKonzept GmbH which are German logistics companies wishing to make a difference. We contacted the US Peace Corps in Togo who, and learned about The Togo Clean Water Project. The Togo Clean Water Project has been taking donations for over 10 years and they have replaced broken pumps in villages throughout the country bringing clean water to over 300.000 people so far. Recently the project replaced 16 broken pumps in communities that lacked potable water with new pumps.

Poverty kills

Unfortunately extreme poverty in Togo persists and the problems poverty creates are widespread. Hunger, water-borne illness, disease, lack of education, gender inequality, and overall a poor quality of life all stem from poverty. Having clean water is a basic need and is the first step in improving the quality of life for these villages.

The Togo Clean Water Project aims to directly reduce of water-borne illnesses and infant mortality in these communities and will also promote gender equality, sanitation and food security. Each of these communities understands that immeasurable amounts of time and resources are lost due to illness and other problems resulting from a lack of access to clean water. These 16 communities have already demonstrated their commitment to this project by raising a quarter of the project’s total cost. They understand the magnitude of the impact that this project can have.

Broken Pumps = No Clean Water

The US Peace Corps Volunteers had a Taught lessons. The villagers learned about hygiene, gender equality, and food security

A new water source can improve the overall quality of life

Replacing the PumpsOne engineer and six mechanics were able to install all of the

new equipment in a few hours

New Equipment

• The equipment restored clean water which is a basic need of any village.• Water is pumped all day to be used for drinking, cooking, farming, bathing.• Hand washing and good hygiene will increase with flowing water.• This project will impact the local community by eliminating the daily need to

transport water from an outside source which is usually done by women and girls, giving them a chance to focus on their family needs or getting an education.

What are the Benefits of this Project?

How We Got The Job DoneCommunity InvolvementThe villages applied to be part of the project. They were involved in bringing the equipment from the port to their village. Once the money and materials arrived the job was completed in a few hours. During the installation, the villagers gathered around to hear a presentation put together by the volunteers which addressed hand washing, sanitation, gender equality, food security, and other issues that the villages face daily. Implementation Completion of the project was accomplished in the following stages: The defective pump was removed from the bore hole and the new pump was installed after the bore hole was sanitized.

Sustainability Designated village members were trained how to use the pump. They were given tools to make minor repairs. These individuals will also learn the basic maintenance requirements for daily upkeep, ensuring sustained operation based on the manufacturer's recommendations. The chiefs of each village have established a maintenance fund to plan for any future costs associated with the pump.

Positive Results

It was time to celebrate once the water started to flow!

16 villages now have water

The project was a success and the 16 new pumps will improve the lives of over 30,000 people.

Donations for this project allowed the work to be organized and carried out in December and January 2014-2015. The pumps will be checked by the engineers several times for the next few years. The villages are collecting a maintenance fund to prepare for problems that arise with the pump in the future. An international group of donors and volunteers were involved and this project which has made a lasting impact in these villages.

35 other villages are still suffering with broken pumps

It is difficult for a village to come up with 25% for the water pump replacement. But 35 villages have been able to get the money together and have asked for help from the Togo Clean Water Project. The receive no help from their government and the people are suffering and dying. Without any means, the people are not able to ask for help from the outside world. Providing water pumps to these 35 villages in need gives them a foundation to fight malnutrition and disease in their families.

Without clean water, many of the children in these communities die before the age of 10
