Existing Highway Geometry:
• Broken-back curves
• Curves with radii smaller than accepted minimum
• High accident rates
Existing Radii = 250’
Existing Radius = 230’
Existing Bailey Avenue Alignment
• Replace existing structurally deficient bridges.
• Lessen channel constrictions to improve hydraulic
openings & reduce ice jamming.
• Improve highway geometrics by eliminating broken back
curves and increasing curve radii.
• Maintain two-way, four lane traffic on high volume
commuter route.
Project Goals:

Preliminary Alignments:
11
Proposed Cazenovia
Creek Bridge:
• Single span rigid frame
• Incorporated alignment
curvature
• Existing South & North
abutments to be
removed
12
Proposed Buffalo
River Bridge:
• Single Span
Simply Supported
Girders
• Existing south
abutment to be
removed.
• Existing north
abutment to
remain.
13
Proposed
Bridge Sections:
• 9 composite
plate girders
spaced at 8’-8”
• Cross frame type
diaphragms used
• Public & private
utilities carried

Erection:
28
• Heavy girders picks + long stick lengths = 2 cranes + mid-air splices• Buffalo River Girders = 229.5’ long x 165,000 LB (total wt.)
• Buffalo River “A” Girders = 134.5’ long x 95,000 LB (segment)
Erection:
29
• Bracing of the first girder installed at the Buffalo River bridge.
Bracing was attached to existing adjacent bridge.
Demolition:
30
• Demolition of the existing bridges presented their own
challenges due to the enormous weight of the existing
built-up, riveted girders.• Cazenovia Creek Bridge Existing Girders = 72 Tons
• Buffalo River Bridge Span 1 Girders = 45 Tons
• Demolition of the Buffalo River bridge was further
complicated by the presence of a counterweight that
had the potential to rotate.• Buffalo River Span 2 Girders = 48 Tons

Learning Assessment:
• What was one of the project goals?• Replace existing bridges, improve hydraulic openings,
improve highway geometrics, maintain traffic during construction
• What type of structure was the Proposed Cazenovia Creek Bridge?• Rigid Frame (Tall Integral Abutments)
• What was the percentage railing dead load increase due to the field change from Steel 4-Rail to Texas Aesthetic Concrete Bridge Barrier?• 500% 40
