TRACTOR SALES ARE UP. TRACTOR SALES ARE DOWN. Both of these statementsare true, but how can that be? It’s all in how you look at the numbers.According to recent reportingby the Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM), tractor sales have definitely been a bit ofa mixed bag. Four-wheel drive farm tractor sales are down 15% this year, and combine sales aredown 17% this year. But other categories are showing modest gains, according to AEM ag sectorlead Charlie O’Brien.“Smaller horsepower tractors, under 40 horsepower, are up 8.7%, and horsepower at 40-100 are up7%,” he says, speculating that demand fromthe dairy sector could be partly fueling theseincreases.AEM also looks at net farm income as itcould relate to future equipment sales, ex-plains AEM market intelligence analyst Ben-jamin Duyck.“When we look at farm income businessincome, we can get a better sense wherefarm income is expected to increase anddecrease,” he says. The areas hit hardest by reduced farm in-come include the Northern Great Plains (-14.8%), the Heartland (-16.4%) and the Mississippi portal (a/k/a the Mid-South, -27.5%). Duycksays the big question right now is how long the downturn in farm income will last. According toUSDA analysis, a gentle decline in export values and farm cash receipts could continue through2016, and increase after that. And while lower commodity prices remain the driving force behind these changes, Duyck saysother factors are also in play. First of all, he says capital expenditures on machinery are expected todecrease from past highs due to a change in tax incentives and subsidies. Second, farmland valuesare rising slowly enough that they can limit a farmer’s ability to use it as collateral, thus reducingcapacity to get credit. Third, Duyck says the used equipment market has become inflated in recentyears.“The large inventory of used equipment sitting on dealer lots is not only decreasing the ability of thedealers to purchase and finance new equipment, but is also lowering the value of the trade-insfarmers tend to use when buying new equipment,” he says.Duyck predicts farm equipment sales will experience a “multi-year adjustment” from historicalhighs. O’Brien adds that he is hopeful most farmers are still carrying strong balance sheets fromprior years, and that the need for increased productivity and efficiency is ever-present.“We continue to need the technology that our equipment offers,” he says.

The US bombed its own guns. When President Obama an-nounced US airstrikes in Iraq, most observers understood thatthe US would be bombing members of ISIS. What many did notknow was that, in a twist of such bitterly symbolic irony that itcould only occur in the Middle East, the US would also be bomb-ing hundreds of millions of dollars worth of American militaryequipment. Here's why: in the decade since the 2003 US-ledIraq invasion, the US has spent a fortune training and arming theIraqi army in the hopes of readying it to secure the country onceAmerica left. That meant arming the Iraqi army with high-techand extremely expensive American-made guns, tanks, jeeps, ar-tillery, and more. But the Iraqi army has been largely a failure. When ISIS in-vaded northern Iraq from Syria in June, the Iraqi forces desertedor retreated en masse. Many of them abandoned their Americanequipment. ISIS scooped it up themselves and are now using itto rampage across Iraq, seizing whole cities, terrorizing minori-ties, and finally pushing into even once-secure Kurdish territory. All with shiny American military equipment. So the US air strikesagainst ISIS are in part to destroy US military equipment, suchas the artillery ISIS has been using against Kurdish forces. Theabsurdity runs deep: America is using American military equip-ment to bomb other pieces of American military equipment half-way around the world. The reason the American military equipment got there in thefirst place was because, in 2003, the US had to use its military torebuild the Iraqi army, which it just finished destroying with theAmerican military. The American weapons the US gave the Iraqiarmy totally failed at making Iraq secure and have become toolsof terror used by an offshoot of al-Qaeda to terrorize the Iraqisthat the US supposedly liberated a decade ago. And so now theUS has to use American weaponry to destroy the Americanweaponry it gave Iraqis to make Iraqis safer, in order to makeIraqis safer. One reason that ISIS has been so successful at conqueringnorthern Iraq is that it has a huge base of operations in Syria, where it had exploited the civil war to overtake huge swathes ofSyrian territory. One reason that ISIS was so successful in Syriais that the US refused to arm moderate Syrian rebels, for fearthat the weapons would fall into ISIS's hands. So that made iteasier for ISIS to overpower the under-funded moderate rebels, and now ISIS has seized, in Iraq, much better versions of theweapons that we were so worried they might acquire in Syria. So now we're bombing the guns that we didn't mean to give ISISbecause we didn't give guns to their enemies for fear that thenISIS might get guns. It's not just ironic; it's a symbol of how di-sastrous the last 69 years of US policy has been. How circuitousand self-perpetuating the violence, that we are now bombing ourown guns. Welcome to American grand strategy in the World! Iwonder when it will end.

“Patriot-- A person who loves his country, and zealously defends its interests.” Webster’sDictionary. Become a Patriot and help shape our Country’s Future!

I believe there are the patriots who “talk the talk,” and there are patriots who “walk the walk.”It’s easy to talk about the ideals of our country, but then its clearly a different matter to holdto your convictions and put words into action. The Veterans of our country are our bestexamples of commitment to the values our country stands for. Take a few moments and thinkof the Patriots that have paid the ultimate sacrifice for all of us, in this great republic. Think ofhow wonderful our country is, compared to others. Think, and be grateful for all things andopportunities we already enjoy, many of which would not be present if not for our devotedVeterans. I think our country presently is experiencing great challenges. If all of us would justbe better Patriots, whether in or out of uniform, and stand up for and demand that our rights, values and freedoms be maintained, those actions in themselves would be a great tribute to allVeterans who have served and are presently on duty around the world. When ever I see aservice person in uniform I enjoy a sense of confidence and security, and a renewed feeling ofpatriotism. My gratitude goes out to all of our wonderful military and all the great servicesthey perform. To those who have “walked the walk” stand tall, you are true Patriots, we thepeople salute you. Sincerely, Rich Entwistle, The Stovery.

PATRIOT FLIGHTS: On September 10th, 55 World War II and Korean War Veterans and their guardian escorts left Albany InternationalAirport to visit the memorials dedicated to their service in Washington, DC. The flight, sponsored by Patriot Flight, part of the Honor FlightNetwork, was the second of the year put on by Patriot Flight, one of two Honor Flight hubs to serve the Capital District, southern Vermont andwestern Massachusetts. Through the efforts of volunteers and the generous contributions provided by individuals, Veterans’ organizations, corporations and others, the flights are provided free of charge to the veteran. Guardians pay a reduced airfare but receive free transportation inWashington as well as meals and associated tours. “Without the generous outpouring of support from groups like the American Legion, TheVeterans of Foreign Wars, The Veterans Motorcycle Club and others, these flights could never take place” said Frank DeSorbo, spokesman forPatriot Flight. He added that the difficulties in finding veterans are increasing as years go on and the number of World War II Veteransdecrease. The flights are expanding to include more Korean War Veterans. This effort to find and enroll veterans is where the dedicatedvolunteers of Patriot Flight are integral. Volunteers are frequently seen manning booths at veterans’ events throughout the region. Reaction byVeterans whether to the motorcycle escort from Christian Brothers Academy, the outpouring of support at Albany International Airport, thereception at BWI, during the tours, or upon return to the reception of family and friends, is priceless. Many speak of experiencing thecamaraderie they felt during their service for the first time in many years. Listening to them swap war stories on the plane and busses during thetour or at the various memorials often brings tears to the eyes of the guardian escorts. If you are a World War II or Korean War Veteran or knowa veteran who is physically capable of making the trip to Washington and would like more information or an application to travel or areinterested in travelling as aguardian, more information can be obtained by visiting Patriot Flight’s web site at www.patriotflight.com. Their nextflight is scheduled for May 2015.OBSERVANCE:Veterans Day is intended to honor and thank all military personnel who served the United States in allwars, particularly living veterans. It is marked by parades and church services and in many places theAmerican flag is hung at half mast. A period of silence lasting two minutes may be held at 11am.Some schools are closed on Veterans Day, while others do not close, but choose to mark the occa-sion with special assemblies or other activities.

Veterans Day is officially observed on November 11. However, if it falls on a Sunday, it is officiallycelebrated on the Monday following. On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 anarmistice between Germany and the Allied nations came into effect. On November 11, 1919, Armi-stice Day was commemorated for the first time. In 1919, President Wilson proclaimed the day shouldbe "filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitudefor the victory". There were plans for parades, public meetings and a brief suspension of businessactivities at 11am.

In 1926, the United States Congress officially recognized the end of World War I and declared that theanniversary of the armistice should be commemorated with prayer and thanksgiving. The Congressalso requested that the president should "issue a proclamation calling upon the officials to display theflag of the United States on all Government buildings on November 11 and inviting the people of theUnited States to observe the day in schools and churches, or other suitable places, with appropriateceremonies of friendly relations with all other peoples."

An Act (52 Stat. 351; 5 U. S. Code, Sec. 87a) was approved on May 13, 1938, which made November11 in each year a legal holiday, known as Armistice Day. This day was originally intended to honorveterans of World War I. A few years later, World War II required the largest mobilization of servicemen in the history of the United States and the American forces fought in Korea. In 1954, the veteransservice organizations urged Congress to change the word "Armistice" to "Veterans". Congress ap-proved this change and on June 1, 1954, November 11 became a day to honor all American veterans, where ever and whenever they had served.
