Renewable & Non-renewable Energy Resources

What is a NON-RENEWABLE energy resource?• An energy resource that cannot be replaced or is replaced

much more slowly than it is used.

• It cannot be made again in a short period of time

Ex. Fossil fuels are continually produced by the decay of plant and animal matter, but the rate of their production is extremely slow, very much slower than the rate at which we use them.

Types:–Coal–Oil (Petroleum)–Natural Gas–Uranium

NON –RENEWABLE RESOURCES PHASES OF MATTER

• Crude Oil (Petroleum) LIQUID• Natural Gas/propane GAS• Coal SOLID• Uranium ore SOLID

FOSSIL FUELSCoal, Oil and Natural Gas are all classified as

FOSSIL FUELS

They were formed from the buried remains (fossils) of plants and animals that lived

millions of years ago

What is a RENEWABLE energy resource?• An energy source that is naturally replaced more

quickly than it is used• It can be replenished naturally in a short period of time• Renewable energy can be used again and again, and will

never run out.Types:– Biomass– Hydropower– Geothermal– Solar– Wind

In 2011, what % of US electricity was generated by renewable resources?

Why don’t we use more renewable energy?

• More expensive to produce and use• Resources are in remote areas so it is a

challenge to build the power lines to cities

• They are not always available (i.e. cloudy days, calm days, drought)
