Resident Spotlight: Harriet C.

Harriet C. was born in Missouri and when she was about a year older her parents moved the family to Lomita, California. She has two half-brothers, Milton & Bill, but they lived with their mother. Harriet enjoyed going to dances, the beach and spending as much time as she could outside in nature while growing up. She had great parents, her father was a policeman and her mother was a housewife. She grew up during wartime and remembers it being difficult, especially for the men. Both her father and second husband served in the military. Her second husband, Raymond, served in the United States Navy. The two met while she was in high school right before he went overseas. They dated on and off again while he was away, and she remembers it being tough. He was busy with his job and she was busy with her own. Harriet briefly worked as a secretary while she was in high school. She later worked for a retail store similar to Sears. Harriet worked there for quite a while, especially during the Christmas season. She went to college for a year which she shares was an informative time of self-discovery. Harriet married another man named Jess. They had two children, Linda and David, but

later made the decision to divorce. She took care of the children and when they were 2 and 4 years old, she eloped and married her former love, Ray, in Santa Barbara. They moved to Torrance and he took care of Linda and David like they were his own. Harriet and Ray had two more kids, Ray and Mike. After she married she worked at a restaurant as a waitress. She later opened her own real estate office and worked as a broker. Harriet worked there most of her life and enjoyed it because she could do it on her own. Ray worked as a car salesman and even had his own dealership in Redondo Beach, CA. They later bought a home in De Luz, CA, right outside Fallbrook, and they put in an avocado grove. They would pick the avocados and go to the market to sell them twice a year. Ray passed away in 1989, but she cherishes the sweet memories she created with him. Ray wasn’t too fond of travel, so Harriet has done a lot of traveling since he passed away. She’s traveled to Israel and extensively across North America. Harriet went to so many places that she finds it difficult to pick a favorite because there were so many good trips. Harriet previously lived alone and she shares that moving to Renaissance Villages has made life a lot easier for her. The staff is great and there are wonderful people all around. She commented that the community is a great place to enjoy life and do the things you want to do. She adds there are so many things to do. Harriet, we love that you’ve decided to call our community, home. Welcome to the Renaissance Village Family.

Harriet during her Resident Spotlight Interview.

Employee of the Month: Gina IIanes

of their family. Raising children in the United States as opposed to the Philippines has been harder for Gina. In the Philippines, there was always help because they were always surrounded by family. However, here there are not very many relatives, so as the kids were growing up they spent a lot more time at home. The two also have a son named Kristofer, he’s 25 and lives with them. Their daughter, Gielenn, is 28 and lives in Okinawa with her husband and son. Gina is a first-time grandma and she finds it so exciting. She has so much love for her grandson and was able to visit with him back in September before her daughter and son-in-law moved to Okinawa. Gina has two Shih Tzus and a Chihuahua named Chewie, Kiki, and Khloe that she loves to care for. When she’s not working she spends time taking care of her home, spending time with her family or dancing in Zumba three times a week. She enjoys going out to eat Thai or Vietnamese food with her husband and also enjoys cooking Filipino food for herself and family. Gina, we appreciate your sense of humor and the hard work you put into caring for our residents. Congratulations on Employee of the Month.

Gina Ilanes loves taking care of residents.

Gina llanes is one of the fantastic caregivers that make up the care team at Renaissance Village Murrieta. She loves helping residents and it shows in the support and care she provides. Gina was born in the Philippines. She was the middle child of three kids and has an older brother and a younger sister. They sometimes fought as brothers and sisters do, but they were always able to fix it. Her family owns a business that produces rice cakes during the holidays and she shares she always grew up around family. She attended the Philippines Women’s University and got her degree from the college of nursing. In the Philippines, she is considered a Registered Nurse and Operating Room Nurse, but here in California, she worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant for over 20+ years before working at Renaissance Village. Gina loves taking care of residents. She gets along with staff and residents and enjoys talking or sharing a joke with everyone. She shares that residents are easy to care for and she cares for each one as if she was caring for her own mother. She shares that everyone at Renaissance Village is nice, friendly and take great care of the residents. Gina married her neighbor and childhood sweetheart, Glenn on April 14, 1987. In 1991, his family made the move to the United States, and his mother petitioned him to come. When he got here, he petitioned Gina and their daughter, Gielenn. Glenn was in the United States Navy for 23 years and retired as a Navy Chief. Today, he works as a Navy Hospital Corpsman. Gina is proud of her husband and the hard work that he does to take care

We’re partnering with the Alzheimer’s Association’s California Southland Chapter to provide a three-part education series. This series provides education, practical guidance and tools to those caring for someone with dementia. The second seminar in this series is Effective Communication Strategies and will take place on Friday, February 9 from 11 a.m. - 12 p.m.

My Parents Need Senior Care - Now What? Now that you have either chosen a community or narrowed it down to a short list, what are the next steps? In this article, we will look at the basics of the move-in process for California Residential Care Facilities for the Elderly (RCFE) as well as some common financial options. The Physician’s Report:The first step for moving into any RCFE is to get a Physician’s Report, or “602” completed by the new resident’s Primary Care Physician (or Medical Director, if they are currently residing at a Skilled Nursing or Rehab Facility). This form gives the community important information regarding each resident’s health and care needs. It’s imperative that this is filled out completely and includes the physician’s printed name, address, and signature. Some medical groups may require that this form is submitted to Medical Records for completion. Depending on the organization, they may take between 7-30 days to complete it. This form may also be used in conjunction with an assessment by the community to determine care needs and possibly care costs. Medication: All incoming residents must have signed medication orders on file regardless of whether or not the resident will be managing their own medication. If a resident does wish to self-manage, they need written documentation from their physician indicating that they are able to do so. The community may do their own evaluation as well. If the community will be managing medication, they need written orders indicating dosage and frequency of all prescription and non-prescription medication as well as all vitamins and supplements. If the resident requires injections or medication with vital sign parameter (such as blood sugar or blood pressure), the resident must be able to either self-administer and/or check vital signs themselves or have a licensed nurse do so. Please check with your community, as policies may vary. Financing: There are many options available to help pay for Assisted Living care; including VA

benefits, long-term care insurance, life insurance and specialty financial products. Long-Term Care insurance is designed specifically to pay for ongoing care needs either at home or in assisted living or similar communities. Long-Term Care insurance policies can vary in costs, benefits and rules and restrictions. Most have annual and lifetime limits. Some life insurance policies can be converted either in part or in whole to cover long-term care through an Advanced Death Benefit. These benefits may be in the form of monthly payouts or be taken in one lump sum. These benefits may reduce or eliminate any amounts paid to your family after death. If you or a loved one is a wartime veteran, they may qualify for the VA’s Aid & Attendance Benefits. Benefit amounts vary ranging from about $1,000-$2,000 depending on whether the benefit is going to a Veteran, a couple or a surviving spouse. Many factors are considered in determining eligibility, including care needs, financial assets, and medical expenses. In order to show there is a need, applicants generally need to already be receiving care when applying. The application process can take 6-12 months. Once approved, payments are retroactive to the date of application. Please contact a VA accredited attorney or claims agent for more information. If you are selling a home or applying for VA benefits to pay for long-term care, your lender or a 3rd party may offer a “Bridge Loan” to help cover costs until those funds become available. These loans generally have higher fees than more traditional loans, but also allow either interest-only or very low monthly payments and are then paid off in-full once the home sells or VA benefits are approved. Every case is different. Please consult a qualified attorney or financial planner for more information regarding your specific situation. Want more information about the Renaissance Lifestyle?
