Renaissance has changed political, economic and demographic structure of the Europe.People’s lfestyles had been changed.These changes reflected on the city plans.

Leon Batista ALBERTI was the first person who create these ideal city form schemes.

It had been tried to create ideal city form.

There are some principles that were applied in Amsterdam.

- Amsterdam city has 4 important squares.-Road system of Amsterdam is radial- Form of the city is circular.- Important buildings that were built in Renaissance had taken place at the centre- Sharp angled city walls were built in Renaissance in order to defend the city from new weapons.

Squares are connected to each other with straight roads.Buildings must not block the vista and straight roads reach an important building or square.

With the invention of gunpowder and new weapons, grand city walls had been changed form of star.

Invention of compass makes it available to cross the oceansand overseas trade. With that development ports gained importance.

In times of Renaissance there was the idea of “ideal city for ideal people”. Almost none of the ideal city plans had been implemented except Palmanova. There are reflections of Renaissance in the city of Amsterdam.

-Big squares had been planned in Amsterdam. (Most important one is the Dam Square)- Important buildings planned in the cetre. - Roads planned straightly in order to prevent buildings to block vista.- Form of the Amsterdam city was planned radial. (City has the shape of 2 nested crescents)- Port of Amsterdam gained important for the overseas trading. - City walls planned as the form of star.- All of the city walls disappeared but some city gates left
