Note: The unemployment and job growth rates are estimates, which are primarily based on surveys created and mandated by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics in cooperation with the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity. The unemployment rate is derived from Florida household surveys conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau under contract with the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The job growth rate is derived from Florida employer surveys conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Both estimates are revised on a monthly basis. In addition, these estimates are benchmarked (revised) annually based on actual counts from Florida's Reemployment Assistance tax records and other data. Procedures mandated by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics may result in more variable month-to-month changes. For further information, go to: http://www.bls.gov/sae/cesprocs.htm

Florida’s Nonagricultural Employment by Industry (Seasonally Adjusted)

• The number of jobs in Florida was 7,742,900 in March 2014, up 225,100 jobs compared to a year ago. March 2014 was the 44th consecutive month with positive annual job growth after the state lost jobs for over three years. The industry gaining the most jobs was professional and business services (+48,000 jobs, +4.4 percent).

• Other industries gaining jobs included trade, transportation, and utilities (+47,500 jobs, +3.0 percent); leisure and hospitality (+42,100 jobs, +4.1 percent); construction (+41,000 jobs, +11.5 percent); private education and health services (+15,300 jobs, +1.4 percent); financial activities (+12,200 jobs, +2.4 percent); manufacturing (+9,700 jobs, +3.0 percent); other services (+6,800 jobs, +2.2 percent); information (+2,200 jobs, +1.6 percent); and total government (+300 jobs, less than +0.1 percent).

• These industry job gains were partially due to increases in services to buildings and dwellings; food and beverage stores; food services and drinking places; specialty trade contractors; ambulatory health care services; insurance carriers and related activities; fabricated metal product manufacturing; membership associations and organizations; telecommunications; and local government. Local Area Unemployment Statistics (Not Seasonally Adjusted)
