Relative clauses with prepositions and whom or which

The man comes from Malaysia. I had dinner with him yesterday.

I visited my friend. I went shopping with her yesterday.

在正式的文体中，关系代词作介词宾语，此时， whom 用于指人， which 用于指物。不可用 that.

和我一道旅行的人不会说英文。 The man with whom I travelled couldn’t sp

eak English.这就是我煮牛奶的锅。 This is the pan in which I boil the milk.

Notice 2

如果限定性定语从句中的介词置于句末，则关系代词可以用 who(m), which 或 that.也可以省略。

The man with whom I travelled couldn’t speak English.

=The man (who/whom) I travelled with couldn’t speak English.

This is the pan in which I boil the milk. =This is the pan (which/that) I boil the milk in.

如果定语从句的谓语动词为“动词 +介词”构成的动词短语，则介词必须后置，不能放在关系代词前面。

Eg. Is it necessary to look up in the dictionary every new word (which/that) we come across in our reading?

这就是那位女士照料了好几年的男孩。 This is the boy (whom/who/that) the woman

has looked after for many years.我已找到了你一直在找的那本词典。 I have found the dictionary (which/that) you

were looking for.

如果先行词是时间名词，介词应放在关系代词 which之前，不后置，或用关系副词 when.

For which= why The reason for which he didn’t show up was
