DESCRIPTION

IT needs to change! We hear that everywhere. But IT has been changing since we were the wizards in the basement. So what is different this time? Technology changes are coming faster and faster. The majority of CIOs indicate in surveys that they are concerned about being able to keep up. These technology changes have affected societal behavior and given more power to the individual customer. In addition, changes are occurring in the business environment. For example, there is a push to rent (rather than own) any business element that does not directly contribute to value creation. (How do you think that fits with SaaS, PaaS, ITaaS, etc?) IT is too often seen as slow, costly, reactive, controlling & even resistant. This will not work in a time where companies must be much faster and much more flexible in order to be successful. Corporate IT obviously has to transform. And a sense of urgency is required.... this cannot be simply a slow evolution. But there are lots of roadblocks in the way - corporate politics, budget, culture...and this transformation needs to be done in addition to all the current work. How can the CIO get it all done? There are a number of practical suggestions in this presentation to help get started. This transformation effort is not for the faint-hearted. Show courage! Don't wait for someone to tell you what to do. That will likely be too late. Don't go it alone. Find 2-3 other CIOs in your network with whom you can regularly share ideas & challenges. Consider engaging the services of an outside advisor. You need someone to regularly encourage you, keep you accountable, and push you when needed. Maintaining status quo is not an option. Will your company thrive by successfully responding to these challenges, or will it wither? Will your IT department become the differentiator your business needs, or will it fade away? The answer may not be the same for each company, but right now, in many ways, the choice is up to you. You CAN make the difference. For the sake of your company, you need to have a sense of urgency in moving this IT transformation forward. Go get 'em!
