Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a disease process thatcan severely impact an individual. Contemporary treatmentstrategies lead to healthier lives for those with SLE. Improving fistula rates is a national initiative. A collaborativeeffort among surgeons, nephrologists, nurses, and patients isrequired to move this endeavor forward. Strategies fordevelopment and implementation of an effective program toimprove the incident patient fistula insertion rates will be the focusof this session. Barriers that have been identified to improvingfistula rates since this project was initiated will be detailed.

Electrolyte distortions are common within the field ofnephrology. Calcium management is a complex series ofpharmacologic therapies. Acute kidney injury (AKI) occurs at an alarming rate withinthe hospital setting. Knowledge of the pathophysiology, analysisof patient risk factors, and the course of AKI will be detailed.Prevention, prognosis, and a detailed course of treatment basedon a comprehensive analysis of the data will be presented.(Pharmacology content: 30 minutes)
143: Peritoneal Dialysis Kinetics - CPMary Gellens, MD
Determining how to perform and interpret a peritonealequilibration test (PET) study will be discussed. The characteristicsof the physiologic impact that the peritoneal membrane provideson solute transport also will be detailed. Developing a peritonealdialysis prescription based upon this knowledge will bedetermined utilizing case studies.

New medications come on the market constantly. Recalls,black box warnings, and drug shortages all affect how prescribersand nurses can provide effective treatment for a patient. This coursewill review new medications and their impact on the renal patientand address the impact of the current changes in our drug marketson persons with CKD. (Pharmacology content: 90 minutes)

213: Sleep Apnea and Its Impact on the Person withRenal Disease - CPMichael Frace, MSN, RNC, C-NPT, NNP-BC, RRT
Many of our patients have sleep apnea, and the impact ofthis disease process on the renal patient can be significant. Thevarious types of sleep disorders and testing procedures to developa diagnosis will be reviewed. Devices, such as a continuouspositive airway pressure, (CPAP) or bi-level positive airway pressure(BiPAP) machine, can enhance the functional status of the patientand improve breathing. The impact of this condition on the patientwith CKD will be addressed.

Have a subject that you know you’d love to share withothers? Considered publishing, but not sure of the process?Wondering how to take that idea and make it into an article? Thisprogram provides a different approach to writing – looking atwriting as an anatomy lesson. You’ll leave this session with tips toimplement more effective writing skills. Nephrotic syndrome has a myriad of causes. Thepresentation of this disease process from childhood and acrossthe lifespan will be discussed. Continuing Nursing EducationGain continuing nursing education (CNE) credit for professional
development, recertification, and relicensure. Earn 11.5 contacthours (CH) for the Fall Meeting. Additional credit is available forattending optional preconference workshops: 6.0 CH for full-dayworkshops and 3.25 CH for half-day workshops. If corporatesupport is received for the pending symposium, additional contacthours will be available.
Sessions marked with ℞ contain pharmacology content thatcan be applied toward pharmacology credit requirements.Pharmacology content credit is time-based on the objectives andcontent outline. Pharmacology credit of 300 minutes is possible tobe accumulated (if attending sessions offering the highest numberof pharmacology minutes available). Additional pharmacologycredit is available from preconference workshops where indicated.
ANNA urges participants to be aware of the CNE requirementsfor relicensure in the states in which they hold a license.

Exhibitor RegistrationExhibitors receive exhibit badges for their booth personnel as
part of their exhibit participation. Exhibitors with badges aregranted access to most educational sessions on a space availablebasis, excluding meal functions and corporate-sponsored events.One nurse per exhibit booth (employed full-time by exhibitingcompany) may apply for CNE credit for the programs attendedand will receive an exhibitor’s badge unless he/she registersseparately as a meeting attendee. ANNA encourages corporatenurses to register separately for the meeting and pay the standardregistration fees since exhibitors do not receive the same benefitsas paid registrants.
Payment PolicyNo registrations will be processed unless full payment is
received with the registration form. If a check is returned by thebank for insufficient funds, full payment must be received bycashier’s check or money order and must include an additional$25 for bank processing charges. If payment is not received bythe national office prior to the meeting, the registrant must paythe full amount onsite before the registration will be processed. Ifyou do not receive a confirmation a week prior to the meeting,please contact the national office (888-600-2662 or 856-256-2320) to confirm receipt of your registration. If you haverequested payment through your facility/employer, check with thefacility/employer to be sure they have processed the payment.You will be responsible for the registration fee onsite if your facilitydid not send the money in advance.
