The mission of the Radiography Program is to prepare the graduates tobecome radiographers who are highly competent and qualified to administer ionizing radiation for medical and diagnostic imaging purposes.

The program sets the standards for radiography education in SoutheasternKentucky with emphasis upon radiation protection, quality patient care andprofessional development.

Graduates of the program are eligible to write the examination for registrationas a radiographer by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists.

1. To provide a quality education in radiography that promotes clinicalperformance and competency

2. To prepare and develop the students communication skills, critical thinkingand problem solving abilities

3. To promote professional growth and life long learning

4. To ensure overall program effectiveness

Regional Radiography Program

Associate in Applied Science Degree

The Radiography Program is a regional program sponsored by HazardCommunity & Technical College (HCTC) and Southeast Kentucky Community &Technical College (SKCTC) through a consortium agreement between the twoinstitutions. The Regional Radiography Program is a two - year program leading

to the Associate in Applied Science Degree in Radiography. This programprepares the individual to become a radiographer who is capable of safelyadministering ionizing radiation for medical diagnostic imaging purposes. Thecurriculum is comprised of specialized courses in radiography along withconcentrated study in the basic sciences, mathematics, and general education.Upon completion of the Radiography Program, graduates are eligible to writethe examination for registration as a radiographer by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologies.

Interactive television (ITV) classrooms will be used to deliver classroominstruction on select campuses of HCTC and SKCTC. This arrangement willenable students to take course work at the campus closest to their homes. Thelaboratory portions of the Regional Radiography Program will be offered on theWhitesburg Campus of SKCTC and the Allied Health Center of HCTC. Clinicallearning experiences are held at modern health care delivery facilities locatedthroughout Eastern Kentucky and Southwest Virginia.

Further Considerations

1. If more than one year has elapsed since the end of enrollment in theRadiography Program, an applicant must repeat all Radiography coursesunless the student has demonstrated current competency by passingexams equivalent to comprehensive course final examinations (bothwritten and clinical skills) if available at the college to which the student isapplying for admission;

2. Students may be readmitted to the Radiography Program one time. TheRadiography Admission Committee may recommend readmission asecond time, if a student submits sufficient evidence of remedial study,additional preparations, or resolution of factors contributing tounsuccessful course completion;

3. Application is not a guarantee of readmission to the program; and

4. If an individual fails the American Registry of Radiologic TechnologistsARRT Certification Exam four (4) times, he or she must repeat theRadiography courses of the curriculum.

TRANSFERRING

1. Applicants who wish to transfer from one Radiography Program toanother must:

a. meet all admission requirements of the receiving institution;

b. apply at least three months prior to the expected date of enrollment;

c. notify the Coordinator of the Radiography Program in writing, statinganticipated entry date and reason for transfer;

d. provide a letter of recommendation to the receiving institution from theprogram coordinator of the previous institution; and

e. submit an official transcript for evaluation by the AdmissionsCommittee.

2. If more than one year has elapsed since enrollment in a RadiographyProgram, the entire sequence of Radiography courses must be repeated.

3. Acceptance of any transfer student will be dependent upon availableresources.

4. The Radiography Admission Committee of the receiving institution willreview all documentation and may recommend admission as a transfer student.

TECHNICAL STANDARDS

Radiography involves the provision of direct care for individuals and ischaracterized by the application of verified knowledge in the skillful performanceof radiological technical functions. Therefore, all applicants should posses:

1. Sufficient visual acuity is needed in the accurate preparation andadministration of contrast media and for the observation necessary for patient assessment and nursing care;

2. Sufficient auditory perception to receive verbal communication frompatients and members of the healthcare team and to assess health needsof people through the use of monitoring devices such as cardiac monitors,stethoscopes, intravenous infusion pumps, fire alarms, etc.;
