AIR CADET RECEIVES AWARD FROM LORD-LIEUTENANT

On Sunday 22nd September 2013, cadets from 1333(Grangemouth Spitfire) Squadron stepped in to ensure that

the Bonnybridge 10k, at Anderson Park, Bonnybridge, couldproceed as planned.

With 107 competitors entered to run from all across the Centralbelt of Scotland, the inaugural 10k race was in danger of beingcancelled when other parties pulled out of providing marshallingactivities along the route. A plea from the organisers to localcouncillors and to the Provost of Falkirk, Mr Pat Reid, resultedin the latter suggesting that the Bonnybridge Community Councilcontact 1333 (Grangemouth Spitfire) Squadron for assistance.

12 cadets from the Squadron, under supervision of their ownstaff, provided route marshalling and a water station in the areaof the Falkirk Wheel, guiding and cheering the competitors alongtheir way. Once all competitors had passed their location, cadetstidied the area and were transported to the start/finish line at

Andersons Park, Bonnybridge where they helped cheer thefinal competitors over the line.

Chris Harley (Bonnybridge Community Council member andevent organiser) said, "We can't thank you (1333(Grangemouth Spitfire) Squadron) enough for stepping in tohelp us. Without you, our event would not have gone ahead."

In assisting with theevent, Cadet DeanMcCarney (15) said, "Asa charity, everything wedo is paid for by fundsraised in our community. It's great to be able topay the communityback."

1. With some minor exceptions, there is no MTP-PCS scaling for the ACO. However, as this clothing has become morereadily available from commercial suppliers and through Army/ACF sources, this document clarifies the regulations for wearingMTP-PCS.

2. Scaled MTP-PCS. MTP is scaled for some units in the ACO (SATTs and JLs) where this type of clothing is consideredappropriate for ‘normal working dress’. Scaling is on a minimum to meet the task.

3. Part Worn MTP-PCS. Limited stocks of part worn, serviceable MTP-PCS are becoming available from Service sourcesbut will be in short supply for some time in both quantity and sizes. It may be made available to units and individuals as andwhen available. MTP-PCS may also be available though local contact with Army/ACF units.

4. MTP-PCS Bought from a Commercial Supplier. MTP-PCS is now freely available from commercial suppliers at a costto the individual. This clothing, which is similar in design and colour to the Service MTP-PCS, may be worn. However, the qual-ity of this clothing might not always be up to the same standard as the Service-issue equivalent. This should be born in mindbefore any purchase.

5. Gore-Tex MTP-PCS. MTP-PCS Gore-Tex waterproof clothing is in very short supply and is unlikely to be issued to indi-viduals or units; therefore CS95 Gore-Tex may be worn in adverse weather conditions.

6. Wearing of MTP-PCS in the ACO. Regardless of origin, MTP-PCS is to be worn as a full suit – ie trousers and shirt, plus jacket as required. It can be worn with either a green or brown Tee Shirt as an under garment. Apart from Gore-Tex (para5), there is to be no mixing of MTP and CS95 clothing. However during the transition from CS95 to MTP-PCS it is acceptedthat units undergoing field-type training will have staff/cadets in both CS95 and MTP-PCS.

7. Boots. May be of either the Black or Brown Service issue pattern, or obtained by private purchase but which conform tothe same safety requirement, style and colour of the standard service issue boots.

8. AP 1358(C) - ACO Dress Regulations will be amended in due course.

THE ROUTINE, STANDARD DRESS FOR THE ACO REMAINS ‘BLUES’ FOR ALL STAFF AND CADETS.

A determined disabled woman hasproved that anything is possible after

completing her first solo flight.

Pauline Gallagher, from Greenock, whowas born with cerebral palsy, says it felt'wonderful' to prove people wrong andtake to the skies.

Her love of flying started as a teenagerwhen she became involved in the RAFAir Cadets where she is now an officerwith 2296 (Cumbernauld) Squadron.

But it was when she found out about thecharity Flying Scholarships for DisabledPeople that her dreams came true.

The 37-year-old, who works in securityfor BT, told the Telegraph: "An armycadet based down south actually told meI would never be able to fly a plane, so Itook great delight in telling him when I gotmy scholarship.

"I did my first flight from Prestwick Airportand it felt wonderful - it was 8pm, a lovelycalm night and the sun was setting."

Pauline says that people are oftensurprised when she tells them how shetakes to the skies.

She told the Tele: "Months after my flightI was sitting beside someone on a planetravelling down south and I was talkingabout flying.

"This guy said ‘obviously you can't fly'and I said, 'yes I can'.

"He then said 'but you couldn't takecontrol of a plane on your own' - youshould've seen his face when I told himotherwise.

"The man just assumed that my disabilitymeant I couldn't pilot."

Pauline is now organising Freedom ofFlight - a flying relay across the UK nextsummer, where 70 disabled people, including a couple from Inverclyde, willbecome pilots for the day and raise fundsfor charity.

She said: "I want to change people'sperceptions and show that if you put yourmind to it you can do anything.

"I'm aiming to raise awareness ofdisabled flying in the UK.

"I also want to raise much needed fundsto support those using the power of flightto increase confidence and self esteem.

"It doesn't matter if you are in awheelchair, as (Continued on page 6)

The service - led by the Squadron Appointed Padre, GavinBlack - was to acknowledge the organisations, e.g. the AirTraining Corps, Boys Brigade and Girls Brigade, thatyoung people participate in these days, and to give thanksto those who help run these organisations on a weeklybasis. The three organisations paraded the Queens, andtheir own colours.

Our banner party consisted of Sgt. McLean, Cpl. Smith andCdt. Laurie. The cadets displayed a small parade whenentering the church and participated with enthusiasm in theservice. After the service, the cadets were invited to havetea and coffee with the congregation of St Margaret'schurch and were told that they were a credit to the unit.

498 (Wishaw) attend Youth Dedication ServiceBanchory Air Cadets have been very busy with first aid

competitions over the past few weeks! Two weekends ago werepresented Scotland & Northern Ireland at the Corps first aidcompetition at RAFC Cranwell.

The competition consisted of a group scenario - where all membersof the team take part in an eight minute test of first aid andteamwork skills - and an individual test - where each member of theteam has to deal with a four-minute scenario on their own. TheCorps team, consisting of Sgt Tim Churchfield, Sgt Chloe Blyth, SgtAdam Davies, and Cpl Sarah Petersen did an exceptional job andcame an admirable second place out of nine.

This qualified them for the Inter-service competition, where theywould be representing the Air Training Corps (all 50,000 of us!) andcompete against the best of the Army, Sea, and Combined Cadets. It just so happened to be at RAFC Cranwell...the weekend after.

Slightly wearily, the new team (consisting of Sgt Blyth, Sgt Davies, and newcomers Cpl Bryony Morkel and Cpl Jana Wojnarowska -the other two were unfortunately on holiday so had to miss out)made their way back down to Cranwell for the inter-servicecompetition. The team came fifth out of seven teams, and werevery pleased to have not come last. As always the first time isalways the hardest, and the Squadron will use this experience asa stepping stone on to greater results. Well done team!

The Air Cadets provide three progressive first aid qualificationswhich are taught at the Squadron or locally in the North East ofScotland.
