Reducing Workplace Fatalities: The Little Things Matter

Recently, NIOSH gathered information on why Wyoming workers have the highest workplace fatality rate in the nation

The national rate in 2008 was 3.6 fatal work injuries per 100,000 full-time equivalent workers; the rate in Wyoming was 17.1 – more than 4.5 times the national rate

There were 210 workplace fatalities in Wyoming from 2003 to 2007; of those, 136 were in transportation and more than half of those workers didn’t wear seatbelts

It was likely, more than 60 lives could have been saved if workers in Wyoming buckled up before getting behind the wheel

BNL performs spot checks to see if workers are wearing their seatbelts; at C-AD, workers face disciplinary action after multiple tickets for moving-vehicle infractions

PPM Walkthrough After the Holidays

PPM criticized C-AD for housekeeping and security following the last walkthrough The follow up to the report on the previous walkthrough

required numerous meetings to discuss issues and months of documentation effort

Preparations for the walkthrough are a Departmental priority Organize your workplaces; move excess materials out of

the workplace Dispose of short reels of copper cable; PPM and DOE have

focused on this issue as a vulnerability and they cannot be convinced otherwise

Stephanie, Dave and Paul will assess readiness for C-AD
