Recycle / Upcycle Bottle Challenge
Overview:
“Americans buy an estimated 34.6
billion single-serving (1 liter or less)
plastic water bottles each year.
Almost eight out of ten end up in a
landfill or incinerator. Hundreds of
millions end up as litter on roads and
beaches or in streams and other
waterways. Taxpayers pay hundreds
millions of dollars each year in
disposal and litter cleanup costs.”

Objective:
To create an ingenious product either decorative or functional from our gathered plastic
bottles, that can be used within our STEM program this year. Be creative and be sure to
sell your product to the voting council! Prizes will be awarded for the following categories:
Most Utilitarian, Most Creative, Best Marketed.
Tasks:
1. Assign group roles: team leader, recorder, design leader, materials engineer,
marketing team (2)
2. Scan QR Codes
-QR code will take you to problem explanation
-product must be limited to a maximum of 2’x 3’ in size
3. Brainstorm possible project ideas
4. Complete design worksheet (on STEM site)
Form due by 4:00pm
5. Gather materials (bottles, tape, scissors) / Construct product
Product must be ready to present by 4:00pm
6. Prepare 1 minute presentation of product:
-30 second group introduction
-30 second infomercial
7. Clean up area
