Interpretasyon The Church was against the NoliFili matter because it showed the cruelty and sinfulness of Spanish friars, but this was not the goal of the novels. Their primary goal was to awaken the nationalism of the youth. Way back in 1956, there was a heated war between religion and the incumbent government, because usually, the state asks the Church about certain matters as a sign of respect to the latter s image as a factor of unity. Basically, the Rizal bill focused on educational improvement because there was an existing dependence on the fact that it was the basic way to ignite nationalism and patriotism of country.

1. Bishops and priests condemned Rizal s novels, which created a feud between church and state.

But I can t understand why Filipino bishops are now condemning his books. Without Rizal s books, there would not be any Filipino bishop today.

Together, they denounced Rizal as anti-Catholic and charged that his writings were replete with errors of church dogma .

2. It is impossible to separate politics from religion.

When Rodrigo ran as a candidate of the Catholic Church, with no political experience whatsoever, he polled more votes than many veteran politicians. Whereas the life, works and writings of Rizal particularly his novels Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo, are a constant and aspiring source of patriotism with which the minds of the youth, especially during their formative and decisive years in school, should be suffused. Whereas, all educational institutions are under the supervision of, and subject to regulation by the State, and all schools are enjoined to develop moral character, personal discipline, civic conscience, and to teach the duties of citizenship.

The Rizal Bill was strongly opposed by three senators who were known as stout defenders of the Catholic Church- Rosales, Cuenco and Rodrigo.

3. Even then, the basic purpose of the Rizal bill was to educate and prepare the youth and not to oppose the Catholic Church. 4. The Rizal Law targeted to instill Filipino citizens with awareness, to maintain dignity, and to give value to freedom step by step.

As a source of education for patriotism, Rizal s unparalled love of country should be given greater stress in the courses offered in our schools.

Rizal s great interest in the development of virtues is now in line with the Constitutional provision that all educational institutions shall develop moral

R.A. 1425 helped, rather an inhibited, the Catholic Church promote morality or moral virtues rather than disrespect and ignorance among Filipinos.
