Breaking Down Silos vs. Building Bridges

• Even in 2008, “Islands of Data” ,don’t seem to be going away at most companiesH b ild• However, you can build bridges between major “silos” with Master Data Management gand Data Governance– But don’t underestimate the hard

political and technical workpolitical and technical work required

Sales & Finance were the first to

Page 6

“get connected” at ADP Dealer Services

Page 7: Real World Data Governance, Spring 2008 MDM Summit

What We’ve Done So Far

• First started using Oracle Financials gin 1999

• But didn’t go live with Customer H b til O t 2006Hub until Oct. 2006

• Took over this area after initial project went liveproject went live– Get the experts “on tape” before they

go away– Importance of setting up your team with

handpicked people– Have a vision of what Customer Hub

Page 7

and MDM can ultimately do

“Can’t do something I don’t believe in”

Who’s Involved?• Sales

– Contributing 2 key people and 3 “data librarians”

– Primary application: y ppSalesLogix CRM

• Finance– Contributing 1 key person– Contributing 1 key person

and 2 “data stewards”– Primary application: Oracle

ERP & MDM platform (withERP & MDM platform (with external content from D&B)

• and of course, IT

Page 8

Dealing with multiple internal groups and external vendors definitely increases MDM’s “degree of difficulty”

What We’ve Learned• Sometimes the biggest problem is the gg p

lack of a common language– Spend time training people new to the

business– Connect different functional areas– Working on alignment between Business and

ITIT

• Critical to have supportive executive sponsors– In our case, the divisional VP of Finance– “Piece that had us the most worried was

Customer”

Page 11

– VP of Sales also put up funding & key people

Remember: if this stuff was easy, everyone would be doing it!

Page 12: Real World Data Governance, Spring 2008 MDM Summit

What We’ve Learned (continued)

• Importance of people side of the business– Knowing the people in your

company and forging relationships is key to creating “MDM bridges”

• Don’t call it “done” - importance of continuous improvement

• Don’t get angry when people bring you errors or problems– They’re helping improve the hubThey re helping improve the hub

and the data’s usefulness

• The biggest win for us has been getting Sales & Finance to work

Page 12

getting Sales & Finance to work from a common Hub

Definitely a “work in process” – so a sense of humor is important

Page 13: Real World Data Governance, Spring 2008 MDM Summit

What’s Next• Have done 59 acquisitions and migrated from

legacy system to Oracle– Redesigned Customer Master several times– Moving towards more & more integrationMoving towards more & more integration

• Solidifying Data Governance gains by further documenting processes & procedures; looking into data profiling as part of new M&A processinto data profiling as part of new M&A process

• Expanding to new partners like Legal and Tax– Listen to what they need – why are they using or

t i th H bnot using the Hub– See what else we can do for them with the Hub

• Further leverage investment in Oracle and D&B

Page 13

We’re realizing that MDM and Data Governance are not “a project”, they’re the core of ongoing programs …

Page 14: Real World Data Governance, Spring 2008 MDM Summit

Remember, MDM is a Long Term Journey …• “Nothing in this world can take the g

place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent. p pGenius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts.the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.” – Calvin Coolidge, 30th U.S. presidentCoolidge, 30th U.S. president

Webster defines persistence as "going on resolutely in spite of opposition ... to be insistent on a position, a question, or an opinion."

Page 14

You are going to encounter political & technical obstacles along the way, but if you’re persistent, you can achieve great things.
