NOT JUST ALL WORK

SOCIALEvery year, Lisney holds a number of social events for staff. In recent times, these have included clay pigeon shooting, paintball, ghost bus tour, Viking splash tour, river cruise, quiz nights, cultural events, Christmas party and summer BBQ.

Lisney-sponsored staff teams take part in various sporting events such as tag rugby, soccer, tennis, sailing and marathons (even half marathons) and attend various functions such as the SCSI Young Surveyors Ball. There are also many after work evenings out!

CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITyWe believe that by embracing corporate social responsibility (CSR) and acknowledging the social, ethical and environmental effects of our activities, we can have a positive impact on the local community, the environment and our own workforce. We work with several organisations such as the Simon Community, Temple Street Children’s Hospital and Junior Achievers.

Our CSR events vary from bake and book sales, to sponsored internships. A number of times a year, a Lisney department will organise a breakfast and coffee morning, where staff will mingle and collect money for a worthy cause.

In addition, throughout the year Lisney accommodates work experience placements ranging from transition year secondary school students to those in third level education. These placements provide participants with a general understanding of our work setting over a short period of time. Commonly placed in the Residential and Commercial Agency departments, participants obtain an insight into the day-to-day activities Lisney employees encounter ranging from property inspections and viewings to typical administration and office management.

Each year we also act as mentors to the various courses run by DIT.

Training and education takes two forms in Lisney – in-house CPD events and training courses. We actively encourage our employees to participate as we believe this assists them in performing their role more effectively, whilst also enabling them to progress through the organisation.

Lisney provides a comprehensive CPD programme, which builds upon those provided by the various professional bodies. They are delivered by way of lectures, breakfast briefings, lunch time talks, courses and workshops. Some CPD’s are given by Lisney staff as internal cross-selling, while others are by external parties on topical matters. At a minimum, 10 events are organised each year with graduates receiving a further 12 a year relating to APC topics. Additionally, Lisney holds two half-day client seminars a year on various property related topics.

In addition to CPD events, Lisney HR set up a structured learning programme for each staff member. This is reviewed on an ongoing basis to ensure that all required training is taking place and to guarantee that any new requirements are identified.

James KearneyGraduate SurveyorIndustrial Agency

“When I completed a degree in Real Estate Management at the University of Northumbria, I decided to travel. After a year I returned to London and worked in residential sales for 14 months. In March 2014 I took a position on Lisney’s graduate programme and I am now working in the Industrial Agency department. I have just applied to the SCSI to start my APC.”

Aoife O’NeillGraduate SurveyorOffice Agency

“Having completed Property Economics in DIT, I decided to take some time out before starting work and I spent four years travelling and working in Australia. I had a fantastic time and gained invaluable experience. Having just arrived home, I joined Lisney’s graduate programme in 2014 and hope to complete the APC within the next few years. I am currently working in the Office Agency as a graduate surveyor.”

“I completed my degree in Real Estate in LIT in 2009 and worked in retail for a number of years. In mid-2014 I decided that I wanted to get back into property and started working for Lisney in August as a graduate in the Residential department. I am currently based in the Dundrum branch where I am gaining a mass of experience. Lisney’s structured learning and training programme is assisting me on my path to becoming a chartered surveyor and full member of the SCSI and RICS.”

“I started working in Lisney’s Dun Laoghaire residential branch office during my school summer holidays. CAREER PROGRESSION

We want to see your career progress. Lisney offer a clear path for progression within the firm, providing ample opportunity for promotion. We aim to create a working environment which encourages and supports staff development, and provides staff with the motivation and assistance they need to deliver their best work and reach their true potential.

We are privately owned and operated by our board of directors. These directors are based in the Dublin, Cork and Belfast offices and as such, they get to know and work with all staff. We believe this allows for better career progression as your future is not being decided on by management overseas who do not know you personally, but rather by those with whom you work on an ongoing basis and know your capabilities.

Graduates are provided significant assistance from Lisney with their APC process.

• On starting with the company, Lisney will provide a half day induction on what’s involved in doing the APC.

• Lisney will assign APC supervisors and counsellors to graduates.

• Graduates will be given one hour per week during working hours to either work on APC diaries or study.

• Lisney will provide at least 12 in-house APC training events annually.

• Lisney will provide at least 10 additional in-house training events annually on topical matters.

• Structured regular meetings will be organised between graduates and their counsellors / supervisors and ongoing performance feedback will be given.

• Mock interviews will be facilitated prior to sitting the APC.

HELPFUL HINTS

• A full driver’s licence is essential for a career as a chartered surveyor. If you don’t have one, work on getting it soon.

• CV’s shouldn’t be more than two pages and should contain your personal information (contact details and hobbies), education (including skills and training courses), previous work experience and references.

• Please take time in preparing your CV. Ask a friend or family member to read through it and ensure that it is formatted correctly and that there are no spelling mistakes. We generally do not progress applications with mistakes in spelling and grammar.

• Where relevant include details of projects you have worked on or any key achievements that may be relevant, this is what will set you apart from other applicants.

• Whilst not essential, give consideration to attaching a passport photograph to your application. This will help the interviewers differentiate you from other candidates.

• At interviews, dress appropriately by looking smart and professional. This is the key to a good first and lasting impression.

• Read the newspaper supplements and know what’s going on in the property market. Showing a real interest and knowledge will carry you a long way through the interview process.
