Setting a table has become a lot more casual over the years, let alone gathering as a family and eating a formal meal. With our busy lifestyles, we are lucky if we are sitting at the table at all! Many people are doing the “grab and run” as they make their way out the door to soccer practice, networking events, or many other daily obligations. However, the odd time when you have to set the table for a fancy, formal gathering, how do you remember where everything is supposed to go? When the buffet-style dinner party just won’t cut it, here are a few pointers to get you through:

A formal place setting is used when there are many plated courses to your meal. Each fork has a purpose, and these are based on things like the salad, fi sh and dessert dishes.

A quick online search can have you set up with the exact spacing standards for the silverware and plate placement… (Who knew that your knife is to be one inch or a thumbprint away from the dinner plate?)

There are many styles of place settings, such as formal (multi- course meal), informal (casual dinner at home or a barbecue), buffet (large family meals or potluck)

Using fi ne bone china, passed down from your grandparents, is a great way to make your guests feel special.

Don’t forget the fabric napkins and table cloth for that fancy occasion.White is easy to clean, as you can use bleach to get out the nasty red wine stains. (It’s best to just

expect that they will happen)Don’t forget the centre piece. Now

is perfect to incorporate tulips or other fl owers that are in season. Remember to keep the arrangement low so that you can see your guests and not be peeking around the fl oral arrangement to carry a conversation. Large, tall arrangements also have more opportunity to be knocked over during the meal.
