He wrote...

What inspired you to write Jack Nightingale?I have always been fascinated by the Occult ever since I was a teenager and read books by Dennis Wheatley. I loved the idea of a detective who solves cases but also has to deal with black magic and demons, and maybe even vampires and werewolves. Most of my thrillers are grounded in reality and I wanted to try to write about the supernatural world where there are no limits.

Between Jack Nightingale and Dan Shepherd, who is your favorite character? It’s impossible to choose between two characters that you have created, in the same way that it’s impossible to love one of your children more than another. I like Jack Nightingale’s sense of humour, and I like Dan Shepherd’s loyalty to his friends and the way he struggles to be a good father. But I couldn’t choose between them. I do sometimes wonder if I could write a book in which both characters appear. That would be great fun.

Just heard that, you have finished the new title setting in Bangkok, Bangkok Bob and the Missing Mormon. Can you tell us something about your new title? Will this be the book for the fans of Private Dancer?I love writing about Thailand. It’s a country I know well and I enjoy writing stories set there. I think fans of Private Dancer will love Bangkok Bob and The Missing Mormon. Bob Turtledove is a former American detective who now lives in Bangkok where he runs an antique shop. He sometimes helps people who have no one else to turn to and in this book he is asked to find a young American boy who has gone missing in Bangkok. As he searches for the missing Mormon he comes across Russian gangsters, hired killers and kickboxing thugs. Some of the characters in Private Dancer appear in Bangkok Bob and The Missing Mormon, but they are very different books. Bob is married to a Thai lady, an estate agent, and a big part of the story is how much he loves her. She’s smarter than he is and earns more money and he can never understand why she agreed to marry him. It’s as much a love story as it is a detective story. It gives me a chance to write about all the places that I go to in Bangkok.

In UK, you are known as a crime/ thriller writer, but in Thailand you are well-known as the author of ‘Private Dancer’, a story about love and death setting in a go go bar scene of Bangkok. What inspire you to shift to this kind of story?Yes, in Thailand I am best known as the author of Private Dancer because that book sells so well there. Everywhere else in the world I am known as a thriller writer. It does seem that everyone I meet in Thailand has read Private Dancer. I wrote Private Dancer partly to explain to people what it is like to live in Thailand. It can be a very confusing place for foreigners because often things aren’t what they seem to be. The ideas was to tell a story from different viewpoints where everyone sees the story in a different way. And a lot of the people in Private Dancer are based on people I know so it is a very real-istic book. I actually wrote Private Dancer almost fifteen years ago and I am thinking about writing a sequel. I would call it Another Private Dancer. I would set it in the present day because Thailand has changed a lot in the last fifteen years, but it is still a very confusing country.

What is the project you are working on right now?I have just finished the new Dan Shepherd book, Fair Game, which Hodder and Stoughton will publish next summer, and I have started the Jack Nightingale book for 2012, which will probably be called Nightmare. When I’ve finished that I’ll start on a new Bangkok Bob book.

He wrote...

What advice would you, as you are know, give yourself as a 16-year-old? Work harder!

What was the first book you remember falling in love with? Just William by Richmal Compton.

When and where do you write?I write in my home in Majorca in January, February and March, and I am very disciplined, writing every day from 6-8am, 10-12, 2-4pm, 6-8pm, with breaks in between for walking, thinking and eating.

What started you writing? When I left the House of Commons, facing bankruptcy, I couldn’t get a job, so sat down and wrote my first book, Not A Penny More Not A Penny Less. I’ve read that it was an overnight success, which is rubbish. I received a £3,000 advance, and it sold 3,000 in hardback, but it then went on to sell 25,000 in paperback in its first year, and has now sold some 20million copies.

What book are you reading right now? We Danced All Night by Martin Pugh - a study of Britain between the two world wars. This is research as well as pleasure.

How do you write? Typewriter, hand, or PC?I handwrite every word, and do approximately 4 drafts before handing it to my PA to type up. By the time my publisher gets it, it’s could be on its 12th or 13th draft.

How do you spend your time when you’re not writing? My major interest is the theatre, and I see at least one production a week when I’m in London, and all of the Stratford season. My other hobby is charity auctioneering which I enjoy immensely. But as I am writing this, I am half an hour off walking to the Oval to watch a One Day Test match, so cricket remains one of my great loves.

What book do you wish you had written and why? J M Brearley’s, The Art of Captaincy, because that would have meant I’d captained the England cricket team.

Which writers do you feel have influenced you most? First and foremost I am a storyteller, so am bound to have been influenced by Dumas, Dickens, and John Buchan. How-ever, I have a passion for short stories, and I mean stories, not whimsical observations, so F Scott Fitzgerald, Maupassant, O’Henry and H H Munro have always been favourites.

What advice would you give to any budding authors?Don’t imagine that the first draft is the finished article, and never seek opinion on your work from a spouse - seek advice from someone you’ve never met before and won’t meet again.

If you could be any fictional character who would you be? Tigger.

Which book are you ashamed you haven’t read yet? Ulysses. I’ve made a bold attempt on 4 occasions, and to date my record is page 37.

Which of your books is your favourite? As the Crow Flies, though of course I’m sentimental about my first book.

ONLY TIME WILL TELLwill be available in February 2011

This is the first in a five book series, the Clifton Chronicles, a mult i-generational family saga from the epic master storyteller.

Jeffrey Archer

“However, I have a passion for short stories, and I mean stories, not whimsical observations, so F Scott Fitzgerald, Maupassant, O’Henry and H H Munro have always been favourites.”
