Reading a Narrative Text

1. The purpose of narrative texts is to entertain the readers with our stories.

2. Generic structure: A narrative text has three main parts which should be well ordered:

Orientation : It tells about the setting in time and place, and the characters of the story (In the story, thesetting is in a city. The main character is Princess Isabel. Minor characters are the beggar and

the fairy)

Complication: this part tells about problem(s) to be solved by the characters. It tells what happened to the

characters. (In the story, the problem was that the princess was cursed - by a witch – and made

her voice lost).

Resolution : It describes the solution to the complication and it gives a suitable ending of the story. (In the

story, the princess did good things to everyone and to a poor-hungry boy. Then, her voice was

 back. She could sing again).

3. Language Features:

Tense: Past, except if it is in speech marks/direct quotation.

Use some adverbs to indicate time such once upon a time, long time ago, one day, and finally.

 Exercise 1.

knocked but no one answered. She went inside and fell asleep.

They went inside. There they find Snow White sleeping. Then Snow White woke up.

She saw the dwarfs. The dwarfs said, “What’s your name?” Snow White said, “My

name is Snow White.”

Doc, one of the dwarfs said, “If you wish, you may live here with us.” Snow

White said, “Oh could I? Thank you.” Then Snow White told the dwarfs the whole story
