Lesson: Murder in a country house; Past Simple

Type of lesson: consolidation

Lesson aims:

1. to have students practise speaking, reading and writing skills;2. to have students practise the Past Simple of regular and irregular verbs;3. to have students practise pronunciation of regular and irregular verbs in the Past

Simple;4. to have students extract information from reading texts;

Materials: students’ book, blackboard, class CD, tape recorder, workbook, handout

Techniques and methods: conversation, demonstration, pair work, pattern practice, discovery technique.

Lead-in (books closed)

- T writes the following types of texts on the board: novels, textbooks, song lyrics, the Internet, newspapers, magazines

- T asks SS: Which do you read in your language?, then: Which do you read in English? (song lyrics, information on the Internet)

- T shows SS some Graded Readers and tells them how important it is to read in English to improve grammar and vocabulary.

Pre-reading activities:

1) - T asks Ss about the house in the picture and elicits ideas about its age and location

- T asks SS what kind of information is written on the back of a book (a summary of the story) and asks Ss to read it

- T asks comprehension questions: When does the story take place?; Who is the main character and victim?; Why was June 22nd an important day for him?; What did he do that night?

2) - T tells SS that the people in the photos were in the house when the murder happened

- T asks Ss to practise in pairs saying everybody is in relation to Jeremy: e.g. Who's Amanda? She's Jeremy's wife.

- T elicits ideas and suggestions about who the murderer is, giving possible reasons.

- T asks SS to read the story, after playing the CD once
