Since the first development of white
OLEDs in the 1990s, numerous efforts
have been made to achieve a balanced
white spectrum and high luminous
efficacy at a practical luminance level.
However, the external quantum efficiency
(EQE) for white OLEDs without additional
outcoupling techniques typically only
reaches 20 to 40 percent today.
About 20 percent of the photons
generated in conventional OLEDs remain
trapped in the glass layer of these devices.
The reason for this is the total internal
reflection of the particles at the interface
between glass and air. Further photons are
waveguided in the organic layers, while
others get ultimately lost at the interface
to the top metal electrode.
Researchers at TU Dresden achieve external quantum efficiency of 76.3% with scalable, lithography-free method.

Numerous approaches have been
investigated to extract the trapped
photons from OLEDs. Now, an international
research team led by Dr. Simone Lenk
and Prof. Sebastian Reineke from the TU
Dresden, Germany, have developed a new
method for freeing the photons. Their work
is described in Nature Communications.
The physicists have introduced a
“straightforward, scalable and notably
lithography-free method for the
generation of controllable nanostructures
with directional randomness and
dimensional order, significantly boosting
the efficiency of white OLEDs.” The
nanostructures are instead produced by
reactive ion etching. This, say the team,
has the advantage that the topography
of the nanostructures can be specifically
controlled by adjusting the process
parameters.
In order to understand the results
obtained, the scientists have developed
an optical model that can be used to
explain the increased efficiency of OLEDs.
By integrating these nanostructures
into white OLEDs, an external quantum
efficiency of up to 76.3% can be achieved.
continued on next page
‘Further applications’For Dr. Simone Lenk, the new method
opens up numerous new avenues; she
commented, “We had been looking
for a way to specifically manipulate
nanostructures for a long time. With
reactive ion etching, we have found a cost-
effective process that can be used for large
surfaces and is also suitable for industrial
use.”
Over the past three decades, organic
light-emitting diodes have been steadily
conquering the electronics market, say
the Dresden scientists: “from OLED mobile
phone displays to roll-out television
screens, the range of applications is
growing”.
Since light-emitting diodes only produce
monochrome light, manufacturers typically
employ various additive color-mixing
processes to produce white light.
A key focus of OLED research is on
improving the performance of white
OLEDs for lighting elements such as ceiling
or car interior lighting; such components
are subject to much stricter requirements
in terms of stability, angular emission and
power efficiency.
optics.org interviewed Dr Lenk about
her group’s work and its potential for
commercialization.
What are the factors limiting the efficiency of conventional white OLEDs?

white OLEDs are electrical efficiency (ratio
of generated excitons to the number of
injected electrons); the radiative efficiency
of the emitters (ratio of generated photons
to the number of generated excitons);
and the outcoupling efficiency (ratio
of outcoupled photons to generated
photons). Typical efficiencies for white
OLEDs are in the range between 10 and
25%.”
How does your approach improve this; and by what factor?
“Our approach is the implementation
of a quasi-periodic nanostructure
working as an internal scattering layer
to outcouple trapped photons. The
nanostructures are produced by reactive
ion etching. The advantage lies in the
fact that the periodicity and height of

the nanostructures can be completely

Could commercially-produced OLEDs could be significantly more efficient in mass production by using your approach?

The Jenoptik Light & Optics team in Jupiter, FL have been developing three types of mission critical lenses for use with the Mars Rover’s engineering cameras. Navigation lenses will capture the first live video footage from the mission as the rover explores the surface of Mars, crucially important when the rover drives autonomously. Hazard avoidance lenses will provide images that will help the rover identify obstacles and allow NASA engineers to see the movement of the robotic arm during sample collection. Finally, a cache lens will verify that a

complete collection of the rock and soil samples have been achieved. Due to the cache lens’ proximity to the samples collected, to avoid contamination, the cleanliness requirements are extremely challenging.
All three lens types were built in a Jenoptik class 5 clean room with state-of-the-art filtration technology for high-precision optical assemblies. Custom test equipment was developed at Jenoptik to measure the optical performance during the demanding temperature extremes to withstand the conditions on Mars. Jenoptik
performed several environmental tests in vacuum and over a wide temperature range with the lowest temperature being -135°C.
“Jenoptik is accustomed to demanding applications requiring expertise in the design, manufacture, and testing of complex optical assemblies in the fields of semiconductor, medical devices and defense industries”, said Jay Kumler, President of Jenoptik Optical Systems in North America. “We are very proud of the technical challenges and rigorous testing we have overcome which has really benefited the entire company, and we are honored to be a part of the monumental mission to Mars.”

Biophotonics revenues reboundNew industry data released this week by SPIE highlights the continuing strength of the biophotonics (* see page 18) marketplace as it recovers from a significant revenue dip in 2015. Industry revenues for 2018 grew to a global total of $121 billion, a compound an-nual growth (CAGR) of 16% since 2015 [see chart1]. Factors driving this growth include emerging technologies – such as wearables, novel imaging techniques, and the advent of nanotechnology in biophotonics—and socie-tal factors including the aging of the world’s population, which is boosting demand for innovative healthcare solutions.
At the Biophotonics Executive Forum during Photonics West 2017, we noted that
a combination of pricing pressure and currency effects had caused a global revenue contraction across many of the top public healthcare companies during 2015: At No-vartis, for instance, unfavorable currency movement negatively impacted revenues by about 9% and at Johnson and Johnson in-ternational sales fell about 13% because of a massive currency drag. As a result of the contraction, total photonics revenues report-ed in US$ for this segment in 2015 fell to $77 billion.
Since then however, currency markets have stabilized somewhat, and the general
economic climate has remained positive, with the result that biophotonics-related market activity has grown steadily. In-dustry examples include global healthcare leader Abbott – which announced organ-ic year-over-year revenue growth of 7.3%

The world’s largest meeting for biomedical optics opens a new decade of developments in light-based biomedical technologies.Saturday night’s BiOS Hot Topics session will be the first with new BiOS symposium co-chairs, Jennifer Barton of University of Arizona, and Wolfgang Drexler of the Medical University of Vienna. Last year, both Rox An-derson and James Fujimoto retired as BiOS co-chairs after having served 15 years in their roles. At the time, Fujimoto noted, “We know the conference will be in good hands.”
Drexler, with nearly 30 years of experience in optical imaging, is head of the Center for Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering, a large research center that focuses on the development of cutting-edge technology for translational medical diagnosis and therapy.
Barton is director of the BIO5 Institute, an
interdisciplinary institute that tackles “big issue” problems, such as how to detect cancer earlier, how to feed nine billion people, and how to ensure a health span that matches our lifespan.
“This is the conference in biomedical op-tics,” says Barton. “SPIE has done an amazing job bringing this community together and growing this conference. I feel like I’ve grown up with it, so it’s really exciting to have an opportunity to lead it.”
“I feel very honored to be the first Euro-pean co-chair of this prestigious conference, and being allowed to shape it to continue to be an exciting event for the entire scientific

Eric Betzig has not been resting on his laureate“If you want to understand any dynamic system, no matter how good your infor-mation is about its components, no matter how good the static images of the compo-nents, it’s not enough to understand that system,” noted Eric Betzig at the BiOS Ple-nary Session on Sunday, where he talked about “the secret life of cells” and his work involved in discovering that secret life.
To help explain the issue, Betzig discussed earlier microscopy tools and showed a slide of a BMW engine with all
its parts laid out. “If I had no prior knowl-edge of how combustion works, or how the gears or the crankshaft works, it would be damned difficult for me to reverse en-gineer that,” he said. “Many of the tools I just described don’t give a comprehension of all of the parts, so you’re missing many of the parts. If you’re doing biochemistry over express, now you have three crank-shafts and 18 pistons and you’re wonder-ing how that’s going to work. Starting in the 1980s optical microscopy would start

IMEC drives into the futureIMEC, the Leuven, Belgium-based innova-tion hub focused on nanoelectronics and digital tech, on Monday, oversaw ITF Pho-tonics 2020, in which speakers discussed the versatility and potential of silicon photonics technology. While silicon photonics is a main way to scale optical interconnects to meet the growing demands of artificial intelligence, cloud computing, telecom and datacom, the technology has applications in many other areas, from healthcare to agriculture and food analysis.
“We position ourselves somewhere in be-tween the academic world and the industry,” said Nora Maene, a business development manager. Its facilities provide both breadth
and depth in expertise, as well as infra-structure, which includes two clean rooms and multiple labs. It works with hundreds of partners around the world, forming an R&D ecosystem, Maene added. “It’s really more of a cooperative approach where our partners learn from us.”
“IMEC is unique in its approach,” said Brian Sapp, Senior Director of Technical Performance and Partnerships of BRIDG, a non-profit public-private partnership or-ganization in semiconductor R&D, which partnered with IMEC in 2016 to establish a new design center in Florida, dubbed IMEC USA. “They have a broad set of application platforms and expertise, which enables them
to create R&D solutions for all types and sizes of projects.”

These are already the days of targeted, spe-cialized computers. “It’s part of matrix mul-tiplication,” he said. “We are in a superstage, having achieved quantum supremacy. And
that says that this system basically works.”Wuellner traced the rise of planned obsoles-
cence in the 1930s with examples from when Pontiacs and Cadillacs stole market share from Henry Ford’s uniform Model T, which soared to sell 17 million cars, costing $575. Computer devices did the same, for decades.
In the old days of “product segmentation,” a 1930 Cadillac would give way to the 1933 models’ new wheels and cute bumpers. That reduced the time of ownership, and, decades on, something similar happened with PCs and the phones in your pocket.
But now, in a time of specialized computers, instead of selling new machines and software, companies will derive revenue from selling

WEDNESDAYWEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 5, 2020
Bring your ideas to booth #1827.
From concept to volume production: You can do it all with Optikos.Brainstorm the design of an optical product or take your concept all the way with Optikos. We provide: Feasibility, Breadboard, Design and Development, Alpha/Beta Prototype, Transfer to Manufacturing, Pilot Build, and Volume Production.
Six companies came out on top at the 10th annual Startup Challenge healthcare and deep tech tracks Wednesday.
First place in the healthcare track went to Odin Technologies, LLC for Lumisense – an optics-based, wearable diagnostic de-vice that assesses extremity hemodynamics – allowing caregivers to identify perfusion injuries and complications.
“We’re developing the next generation of intelligent wearable devices to help clini-
cians to identify non-obvious hemorrhage and compartment syndrome in trauma patients,” said Odin founder and CEO Steven Hansen. Through early identification, Lumi-sense allows patients to get the treatment they need sooner; improving outcomes and reducing costs for hospitals.”
Rubitection took second place for the Ru-bitect Assessment System (RAS) – an optical skin health and wellness tool for diagnosis and monitoring with an initial application
for early pressure ulcer (bedsore) pre-vention. RAS uses applied reflectance spectroscopy to identify redness or changes in the coloration of the skin.
“RAS is a technology that’s ad-dressing a global healthcare prob-
lem,” said Rubitection CEO Sanna Gaspard. “It can reliably measure the properties of the skin on all patients independent of skin color, and it can be used easily by an aid or skilled nurse.”
Rachel Kuperman, founder and CEO of Eysz, Inc. came away with third place for her company’s Seizure Monitoring Software. “Detecting and responding to seizures is critical to managing epilepsy. Today, accu-rately detecting seizures outside of a hospi-tal-based setting is like trying to diagnose a fever without a thermometer.” The software being developed at Eysz will analyze passive eye movement data including relative eye position and blink frequency, to measure seizures with loss of consciousness.
First place in the deep tech track went to

DON’T MISS THESE EVENTS TODAY.
PRISM Awards honor innovative companiesAt last night’s gala event, these 12 companies took home a coveted PRISM Award honoring the best in photonics innovation. This year’s winners included the first back-to-back win-ner in CloudMinds, and, for the second year in a row, a former Startup Challenge win-ner turned its large check into a trophy as PhotoniCare took home an award.
Communication: Innolume’s CW Datacom Laser is an enabling component for a new generation of data communication equipment. It will substantially reduce laser
costs and power consumption – saving ener-gy and the environment one laser at a time.
Energy: Prisma Photonics is the first and only company to offer highly effective, high-fidelity monitoring of electrical trans-mission lines based on pre-existing optical communication cables. A single Prisma-Sense system can monitor 100 km of trans-mission lines without the need to install any sensor on the lines or towers.
Healthcare: PhotoniCare’s TOMi Scope uses light to see through the eardrum
and directly visualize fluid in the middle ear for the correct diagnosis and treatment. The TOMi Scope uses a proprietary optical coherence tomography engine that meets a significant clinical need at a price point and ease-of-use that enables it to be leveraged in primary care settings.
Life Sciences: TERA-print’s TERA-Fab E series is the world’s first desktop nanoprinter based on a new, highly scalable and versatile photolithographic technology,
