What BDS does WHY we implemented HOW we set about implementing the switch from AACR2 to RDA, and WHEN. I can then explain some specifics to do with implementation, and hopefully give those who have yet to implement RDA some useful pointers.

To create RDA bib records, we needed to know what the content of the record should be, which would take staff training, and we also needed to be able to code that in MARC21, which would take IT development. Customers also needed to be able to receive RDA fields and subfields, tailoring their records = work for IT.
Since the British Library planned to implement from 31/3/2013, and the CIP data is released roughly three months in advance of publication, it was decided that BDS would implement at the start of 2013.

RDA asks us to do various things when creating a bib record, most notably creating an AAP; identify the work, identify the creator, specify their relationship, and to describe the manifestation.

So, here’s the AAP, identify the creator, identify the work, specify the relationship. RDA also asks for a transcribed, “title proper”, the given title of the manifestation. In MARC, the 100 and the 245 fields we have several RDA elements conflated.
