We have now relocated bothhome and office to Capalaba. Ihad anticipated a smooth, easymove. So much for that idea.

The removal ists were great -thanks to Shane and the guys fromRocket Removals (shameless plug)- they are members of Lions anddo a lot of good work for thecommunity.

We lost a week in the move, whichis hardly surprising real ly, so thismonth we are down to a 32 pageedition. But fear not, we plan for alarger edition next month.

This month's competition was al ltied up with Movember (see page27). The lucky winner was Shane, who used to have a trulymagnificent beard and moustache.Al l gone now. And he wil l also begone, over to Straddie for threenights, courtesy ofThe AnchorageBeachfront Resort.

I 'l l be going to the Straddie Oysterfestival. Al l those oysters are justwaiting to be gobbled up, and Icannot resist!

Now, I usual ly keep this section for

my own, but I got a late pressrelease which I thought wasimportant enough to replce someofmy usual waffle.

As you can see opposite, RedlandCity wil l welcome a record numberof new Austral ian citizens on 1 3thNovember.

Even though I was born inAustral ia, my father was acommercial airl ine pilot and hiswork took our family to manycountries. So, I would l ike toextend to our new Austral ianCitizens and residents of RedlandCity a warm welcome.

I t is a hard thing to do, to leaveone's homeland. To travel aroundthe world to a country where thelanguage is different, customsstrange and often bewildering.

I know how hard it can be, havingmoved to England, Canada andback, final ly to Austral ia.

So welcome one and al l .

Cheers

KIA Si Auto

My first impression was thatthis is a very pleasant car todrive. That might not sound likemuch of a compliment, but it is,after all, what is essential in acar.

The controls and instrumentationare simple and intuitive, they hadto be so, as being a demonstrationvehicle, initial ly I had no ownersmanual to consult. Which justshows it is easy to operate.

First, the technobabble - we havehere a four cyl inder, 5 door hatch.al l the usual features, airconditioning, power steering(which has three settings - nice),traction control, which works, cruise control -which I figured outwithout the manual - airbagseverywhere, six of them.

This was the mid range version, ithas a 2ltr GDI motor with a sixspeed automatic transmission, fitted with an easy to 'manu-matic'manual control on the auto. Mostother cars in this range only comewith 1 .8 Ltr and five speed manualor automatics.

Just be aware, if you are tal l , don'twear a hat, the A pil lar is quite lowand you han bump your head ifyou have the seat in the ful lyraised position, which I usual lyhave, being a bit of a shortie.

A bril l iant feature is the mirrors. They fold away, flattish up against

the body at the touch of a button.Remember the hail scare we had awhile ago? I went home to hidethe car in the garage. I don't thinkthe garage was real ly designed forcars, but I hit the button and theyfolded away - easy. They also foldaway when you park it, Great forshopping center carparks.

The styl ing. in my opinion, isquietly confident. There are noexcessive bumps, lumps or sil lyspoilers, just an attractive smoothl ine. Not sure about the rear l ightcluster, but then you don't get tosee the back end - others do.

Nice performance, so that otherscan be the judge of the rear l ights.I t accelerates smoothly, if notquickly. This is not a sports car, buthandles nicely and is just, as I saidpleasant to drive.

I have a similar hard plastic dashboard in my car. I t makes sense in

our cl imate, that hard, greyplastic has embossedpatterning, I 'm not sure if istrying to look l ike carbonfiber, or if it is just a stylesomeone cooked up. Eitherway, it is pleasant to sit inan look out over.

The front visibil ity is almosttoo good, you can't see thefront of the car. But fear not, there is a sensitive sonaranti-col l ision warning if youget to close to a

pole tree, of (as I foundout) if someonesuddenly walks out infront of you.

For the first time ever, Ipersonal ly saw howthis is a good safetyfeature.

Driving out from a carpark, forwards, even, Iwas checking aroundthe car, a pedestrianwalked out fromnowhere. About to put my footdown and move out, the carstarted beeping at me and aflashing indicator l it up. The poorguy never knew how close he was.Good feature.

The reversing camera is good, showing a safe path to yourparking spot clearly.

Plenty of room inside, although

the rear seat squab doesn't fold upfor a flat load space, there is sti l l aheap of room for this sized car.

One word of warning, if you feell ike removing the headrests, do itwhen the drivers seat is adjustedto its lowest setting, or you won'tget them out, which was a l ittleannoying. I had to recl ine the seatthen go around the back toremove the headrest from theback seat.

S Manual $1 9990 drive away, up to$34996 drive away for the top ofthe range SLi Automatic.

The model I tested is the Si Auto,at $29,846 drive away, as they say.The base model (S Manual) is$1 9990, the top of the l ine (SLiAutomatic) is 34,996.

I l ike it. Nice and easy - no fuss.

Straddie is simply one of themost wonderful places on theplanet.

So, to say that it is the ‘ jewel in thecrown’ of the Redlands, or evenQueensland, doesn’t recognise itstrue status as a place of nationaland international importance.

Straddie has it al l . Whilst the GoldCoast might hum to the beat ofnightclubs, and the Sunshine Coasthums with coffee machines,Straddie hums to something moresoothing and greater altogether.Straddie hums to the beat ofwhales passing; dolphins playing;tides coming and going; sun risesand sets; moon phases; mul letseason; oyster season... Simplerhythms that are good for the soul, and good for relaxing.

The people of the island are unitedby their connection to theserhythms. If you are a first timevisitor to the island you are in for atreat. I f you are a casual visitor thenyou know that the more you visit, the more it rewards you. And if youl ive there, then you are one of thelucky ones. Straddie is blessed. Maythose blessings be upon you!

“This legislation honours theNewman Government’s electioncommitment to del iver a frameworkfor an orderly end to sand mining onNorth Stradbroke Island, and wil lensure a sustainable economic futurefor the local community on theIsland.” he said.

“This approach wil l protect jobs andincome while providing sufficienttime for the local economy andbusinesses to transition away from arel iance on sand mining.

“I stress that the extension ofminingactivities provided for by this Bil l wil lnot occur within national parks orenvironmental ly sensitive areas onNorth Stradbroke Island.

“Sensitive environmental areas andnational parks on North StradbrokeIsland wil l not be affected by thelegislation and these changes wil l notrequire any amendment to the

current Indigenous Land UseAgreement between the State ofQueensland and the QuandamookaPeople.”

Mr Cripps said the Bl ighGovernment’s plan to phase out sandmining by 201 9 would have seen themajor economic activity on NorthStradbroke Island shut down in justsix years.

“That would have been an economicand social disaster. This timeframe isfar too short given there is currentlyno alternative economic activity ofany significance that would becapable of generating a replacementfor mining jobs within that time.

“The real ity is that the economy ofNorth Stradbroke Island was and stil lis largely dependent on the miningoperations for employment andincome.”

Member for Cleveland MarkRobinson said the introduction of theBil l into the Queensland Parl iamentrestored common sense andcertainty to the future managementofmining on the island.

“I t is estimated Sibelco Austral iaLimited currently injects close to$1 30 mil l ion annual ly into theQueensland economy and themining industry employs around 1 4per cent of the Island’s totalworkforce,”Mr Robinson said.

“This critical employment andeconomic investment in NorthStradbroke Island would have been

lost had the former Laboradministration’s green-driven agendabeen al lowed to continue.

“I t wil l take time to develop theprivate sector interest andinvestment to encourage thedevelopment of nature-basedrecreation, tourism and education onthe Island and I’m certain residentswil l be rel ieved to have a moresensible, wel l-planned end to sandmining under the NewmanGovernment.”

The North Stradbroke IslandProtection and Sustainabil ityAmendment Bil l 201 3 wil l :enable Sibelco to seek a renewal ofmining leases in 201 9 at theEnterprise Mine until 2035, therebyproviding a real istic timeframe inwhich North Stradbroke Island cantransition to other industries such asnature-based recreation, tourism andeducation;

remove the restricted mine path atthe Enterprise Mine andconsequential ly amend the relevantenvironmental authority. This wil lreduce the harm done toQueensland’s sovereign risk andleave environmental matters to theappropriate legislation; and

provide for an opportunity to renewmining leases associated withYarraman mine and Enterprise mine, until 2020 and 2040 respectively witha non-winning condition. This wil lprovide the necessary mechanism toal low for the rehabil itation of thesemine sites.

Island community to benefit from extension ofsand mining

Sibelco welcomes theintroduction into Parliamentof the North Stradbroke IslandProtection andSustainabilityAmendment Bill that will seethe continuity of mining atour Enterprise Mine on NorthStradbroke Island.

Sand mining has underpinnedthe economy of NorthStradbroke Island for over 50years and the previousGovernment’s plan to cease al lmining activity by 201 9 did notal low sufficient time for analternative economy todevelop.

The legislation put forward bythe Newman Government wil lensure the Island’s economy ismaintained into the future, without compromisingenvironmental goals orindigenous heritage.

Sibelco continues to be a goodneighbour and we have workedhard to ensure our operationsare inaccordance with theNative Title rights of theQuandamooka people. Bycontinuing the l ife of sandmining, we are also ensuringthe continuity of job security fora large number of indigenousand nonindigenous famil ies onNSI and the continuation of oursupport for the Islandcommunity.

“While I was in Asia I spoke with anumber ofpeople about potentialinvestment opportunities in theRedlands, including our two PriorityDevelopment Area projects,” she said.

“It is fantastic to see that thesediscussions have had an immediateimpact with an investor and hisbusiness associates I met in Beijingvisiting the Redlands less than a weekafter my return.

“During the visit, which occurred onWednesday 9 October, the investor

explored Cleveland and the ToondahHarbour Priority Development Area,Weinam Creek PDA and showed aninterest in other potential developmentsites within our city.

“The visitors were very impressed withthe potential for investment and furtherdiscussions are expected to occur in thenear future.”CrWilliams said a second internationalinvestor would also visit Redland City inthe next week to investigate potentialopportunities, showing the city’s Openfor Business policy was on track.

“In addition to our two PDAs at ToondahHarbour and Weinam Creek, there arealso a number of residentialdevelopments that are attractive toboth Australian and internationalinvestors,” she said.

“We are also seeing some excitingopportunities in the Cleveland CBD withtwo key buildings being bought byinvestors recently, indicating a growingconfidence in the city.

“The combination of all of thisinvestment and development activityshows that the Redlands is againpunching above its weight in terms ofinvestment activity.”

Redlanders will continue to berequired to register their catsafter Council today(Wednesday 9 Oct) voted toretain compulsory catregistrations in the interests ofthe environment and thecommunity. The Council decision fol lows theState Government’sannouncement it would repealsections of the AnimalManagement (Cats and Dogs)Act 2008, removing mandatorystate-wide cat registrations andleaving it up to councils todecide whether to pass locallaws requiring cats to beregistered.

Animal Managementspokesperson Cr Wendy Boglarysaid the current cat registrationrequirements would continue toapply for up to 1 2 months whileCouncil considered the matteras part of its wider Local Lawsreview.

“While there is l ittle doubt petscontribute to our qual ity of l ife,the needs of pet owners need tobe balanced with the rights ofthe whole community,” she said.

“This Council decision is aboutsupporting responsible petownership while ensuring theenvironment is protected fromany potential negative impactscats may bring.

“Stray cats are a significantenvironmental issue and eachyear Council has to deal withabout 1 30 complaints relating tocats straying onto neighbouringproperties, creating a nuisanceand attacking wildl ife.”

Cr Boglary said Council workedhard to make sure petregistration was affordable andoffered reduced fees for de-sexed and micro-chipped pets asan incentive for pet owners.

“Continuing the need for catregistration and offeringreduced fees for de-sexed andmicro-chipped pets promotesresponsible pet ownership andhelps us continue to protect ournatural environment,” she said.

“Registration and micro-chipping also means loved petscan swiftly be reunited with theirowners should they become lostor have been impounded.

Snakes al ive as temperatures riseResidents are being warned to beon the lookout for snakes as theybecome more active with theonset of warmer weather.

Redland City Council environmentspokesperson and Division 9Councillor Paul Gleeson saidresidents needed to be aware thatthe onset of spring meant snakeswere out and about.

“Snakes are part of living in Australia, particularly in the warmermonths,so residents need to be aware andtake precautions,”he said.

“Snakes generally come in lookingfor food and shelter, so keepingyards mowed and free of timber thatattracts mice and rats will help keepa snake free environment.”

Cr Gleeson said there had alreadybeen a number of reports fromresidents about snakes in theRedlands.

“One lady contacted me to say thatsix snakes had been located in herbackyard, so I think it is timely for allresidents to keep in mind thatsnakes may be about,”he said.

“People should be particularlyvigilant when they are outsidegardening or hiking and wearprotective clothing such as coveredshoes, long pants and gloves.”

Cr Gleeson said the QueenslandGovernment Department ofEnvironment and HeritageProtection provided valuable tips ontheir website for people to keeptheir homes snake free.

“I think the most important thing toremember is that people shouldnever interfere with a snake, in factmost snake bites occur when people

try to capture or kill a snake,”he said.

“People also need to remember thatsnakes are a protected species, so itis actually an offence to kill, injure ortake snakes from the wild.

“If a snake is in your house you cancontact an authorised snake catcherto remove it.”

There was a 20 per cent overallwater quality improvement in citywaterways over the past year, according to the Redland CityCouncil 201 3 Redlands WaterwayRecovery Report released today.

Redland City Mayor Karen Will iamshailed the improvement as a greatachievement and thanked the localcommunity for its contribution.

“This significant improvement is theresult of a great deal of hard workand commitment by Council andthe community,” CrWill iams said.

“This report shows that 93 per centof freshwater creeks on themainland and Southern MoretonBay Islands are in fair to goodcondition, which is good news forthe Redlands community and the

health of our environment.

“More than 60 per cent of ourwaterways have scored a B rating, which means they are in goodshape, but we cannot afford to losesight of our long termenvironmental goals and need tocontinue to work towards improvingthe health of local water ways.”Council environment, waterwaysand foreshores spokesman Cr PaulGleeson said while there had beenan overall water qualityimprovement there was stil l roomfor improvement.

“Overall water quality has improvedfor Tarradarrapin, Cleveland,Thornlands, Eprapah, andMoogurrapum catchments andRussell Island, while the rating issteady forWeinam, Serpentine,

Upper Tingalpa and CoolnwynpinCreeks as well as Lamb, Macleay andKarragarra Islands,” he said.

“But we have seen a decline in waterquality in Hil l iards Creek and NativeDog Creek, due to a buildup ofnutrients.”“People need to be aware that theiractions can result in nutrientsentering local waterways andimpact on water quality.

CrWill iams said a whole ofcommunity effort was required toensure the health of our waterwayscontinued to improve.

“Our environmental goal is to makesure all Redland creeks are in goodhealth, that means halting andreversing any decline in the qualityof our freshwater waterways,” shesaid.

“While it is early days but we arealready well on the way to achievingthis target so overall we are veryhappy with the results.

“The South East Queensland 201 3Ecosystem Health report card resultsare due to be released soon forfreshwaters, estuaries and MoretonBay.  Both reporting systems arevaluable tools to help us track ourprogress towards recovery of ourwaterways.”

PS Maid ofSker

THIS month we’re venturingout of the mangroves and intoa park, to tell the story of theMaidofSker.

Even though she’s now restinghigh and dry in Bischof PioneerPark at Nerang, theMaid ofSkerused to grace the waters aroundthe Bay Islands on her regularruns from Brisbane to Southportand Nerang carrying passengersand cargo – and in later l ife, sandfrom Canaipa passage. The Maid ofSker is an iron paddle-

wheel steamer, built by the JWSutton foundry (later known asEvans Anderson Phelan) atKangaroo Point in Brisbane, andlaunched in 1 884. She’s 74-footlong with a beam of 1 7 feet, andher twin paddles amidships werepowered by a 1 6HP steam engine. She drew 5 foot 2 inches – whichis deep for a paddler – and which

would definitely cause her troublethese days on that same runthrough the bay. .The Maid of Skerwas capable of carrying 65 tonnesful ly laden, and original ly cartedtimber from Philpott’s sawmil l onthe Nerang River to Brisbane.

For more than 30 years from 1 897until 1 930, the Kleinschmidtfamily from Pimpama ran the MaidofSker on a weekly Brisbane toSouthport voyage, carryingpassengers and general cargofrom Southport and the Nerangand Logan Rivers to Brisbane.

Cargo included bagged sugar (in1 40-pound/64kg sacks) from twoof the Kleinschmidt’s mil ls onPimpama Island and Benowa onthe Nerang River.

The Maid ofSkerwould leave theBrisbane River on a Monday and –depending on the wind and tides– would arrive at Southport onTuesday. During the cane crushingseason she would sometimesmake the run twice a week.

To get to Nerang on the one tidewas quite a feat. She would waitti l l the flood tide carried her overthe shal lows, then it would be twohours steaming upriver to Nerang– leaving only one and a halfhours to unload and reload withfarm produce (such as potatoes, corn and sugar), so that she couldcatch the ebb tide back over theshal lows at the mouth of the river.

The leisurely 1 0 to 1 2 hourjourney from Brisbane toSouthport – at about 5 ½ knotswith a ful l load – was usual lyuneventful, but the Maid ofSkerwas sometimes seen resting on asandbank, waiting for the tide tofloat her off.

On one occasion the Maid ofSkerpaid an unscheduled visit toMacleay Island, running agroundat Pats Park in the middle of thenight. She stove in her bow butluckily the watertight bulkheadheld. She was pul led back off bythe 99HP steamboat Boko and

was able to l imp backto Peters Sl ip at

Kangaroo Point.Remember there were‘bugger-al l ’ l ights in thebay in those days.

I t was said that a stiffsou’easter would stopher in her tracks, and shewould have to shelterbehind one of the manyislands in our neck of thewoods until the winddropped. By 1 930 shewas ‘had it’, and wasreplaced on this run bythe 25-ton Florant, a 93-footmotor vessel of American origin. The poor ole Maid ofSker suffered

the fate ofmany old steamers -with her engine removed and hul lstripped of al l superstructure, shebecame a gravel and sand bargefor the remaining 40 years of heractive l ife.

The Florantwould tow her toSouthport with a load of gravel forthe Kleinschmidt gravel yard atSouthport, then bring her emptyup to the sand-loading jettyopposite Browns at Canaipa Pointon Russel l Island. She would takeon about 70 tonnes of sil ica sand, destined for the glassworks inSouth Brisbane.

On at least three occasions shesank – I’m guessing she was

‘loaded to the gunwales’, as theysay.

When the gravel yards weretransferred to Brisbane, shebecame a gravel barge on theBrisbane River until her retirementin the early 1 970s.

The Kleinschmidt family donatedthe disused hul l to the Gold CoastCouncil in 1 975. A project by acombined group of service clubsand the Albert Shire Councilrelocated her battered andrusting hul l to Bischof PioneerPark at Nerang in 1 976, a l ittleupstream from her original berthon the Nerang River. I t took fouryears to restore her to her formerglory.

I did hear rumours that there wereonce plans to refloat her, but Ithink she looks prettycomfortable in her presentsurroundings.

It may not have been one of thelargest of gatherings at RedBay micro brewery, but it was,in all likelihood the most fun.

Held for the impending'Movember', which raisesawareness of prostate cancer -several dozen moustachioed menprepared to bear their faces for agood cause.

Movember, has grown "from 30Mo Bros in Melbourne, Austral iain 2003 to 1 .1 mil l ion Mo's in201 2, Movember, through thepower of the moustache hasbecome a truly global movementthat is changing the face ofmen'shealth.:

Not a bad record for only tenyears or so.

Our fel lows were already beardedand moustached, so the aim wasto remove al l that facial fuzz, sothat it could be re-grown forMovember.

And what a way to have a shave!Renae, from Renea's Men'sBarbers kindly volunteered hertime and expertise to give whatmany men have never had, buthad often wondered about.

A cut-throat razor shave.

Nobody actual ly panicked, but

thre were a few nervous looksand shuffl ing of feet. Nobodywanted to be first.

As I had previously enjoyed theluxury of a cut-throat shave in myearly years, I volunteered t be thefirst under the knife (apologies tomy wife, Kirsty, who prefers mewith a moustache).

The men, and moustachesfol lowed thick (especial ly somemoustaches) and fast. After al ittle while they were l ining up fora shave.

Jeff's beer might have hadsomething to do with thesuddenly corageous men havinga beer, a chat and a joke. Usual lyat the expense of the next victim,er, customer. Al l good fun.

A three night stay on Straddie, courtesy of the friendy people atThe Anchorage Beach Resort wasup for grabs. We thought longand hard as to the best way toaward the prize, most hairremoved, either by weight or byvolume or even the fastest shave,or the longest.

Eventual ly we just drew a nameout of a hat. As luck would haveit, Shane from Macleay Island wasthe lucky winner. Wel l deservedtoo, as he definitely had thegreatest growth in the house, in

both weight and volume.

A special mention should go toour reluctant hero, Mick, who hadjust spent weeks growing animpressive specimen. A quickwhip around raised the required

$1 00 to convince him to part withhis new growth!

A great day was had by al l , andwe'l l try to get some pictures ofthe regrowth for the next edition.
