…that is why we have teamed up to bring you a fun, creative and innovative way to use nonfiction reading passages in your classroom as you support 21st century skills in your classroom.

Reading Comprehension

When kids are encouraged to express themselves and take risks in creating

art, they develop a sense of innovation that will be important in their adult lives. “The kind of people society

needs to make it move forward are thinking, inventive people who seek

new ways and improvements, not people who can only follow directions.” “Art is a way to encourage the process

and the experience of thinking and making things better!”

(Source: Encouraging Your Child’s Exploration of the Arts By Heather Dundas, artsedge.org)

Students need to read and comprehend nonfiction texts. Research

suggests that informational reading helps students to develop their

background knowledge. Background knowledge accounts for “as much as

33% of the variance in student achievement.” Informational texts help students to extend the range of topics they learn about, and therefore make

them stronger readers. (Source: Nonfiction Reading Promotes Success, ascd.org)

• There are three versions of each passage per coloring page.• You’ll note that each passage has a symbol on the top right-hand corner of

the page. The symbol represents the grade-level-range for the passage. • The square shape is targeted to students in grades 3 and 4. • The circle shape is written for students in grades 5 and 6.

• The triangle shape is for students in grades 7 and 8.

•••

About the passages:

© Art with Jenny K./Jenny Knappenberger 2017 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED www.artwithjennyk.com

• Of course, students’ abilities range in every grade and classroom, so it’s a great idea to preview the texts and then select the version of the passage that is most appropriate for your students.

• You may want to provide different levels of the reading passage about the same topic to different students in your classroom…instant differentiation! The answers to the multiple-choice questions are the same, so the coloring shapes will follow the same format. That way, students will not even know that they are reading different leveled passages!

• Or, as the year progresses, you might want to gradually increase the difficulty of the passages that students are reading.

• If all of the passages seem too challenging for the students in your classroom, you might consider working with students in small groups or previewing the text and questions with the class first before students work through the passage and questions independently.

Page 7: RC Emoji FREEBIE · Emojis are the best idea ever! That’s because emojis are an important way that people communicate with each other. Emojis were created in the late 1990s by Shigetaka

• Not only will students benefit from discussing their answers and noting how they found their answers in the passage, it will also ensure that they have the correct answers when designing the artwork.

• Reviewing the answers is a great way to highlight the questions that addressed the reading comprehension skill you taught a mini-lesson on as well.

Tip: Review students’ answers to the reading comprehension passages before they begin working on the coloring pages.

• You may want to teach a quick mini-lesson about each reading comprehension skill before students begin reading.

• Mini-lesson plans and content have been created for you for each passage.

• These activities are perfect to use when preparing for:

• standardized assessments• as homework assignments• in literacy centers• before or after school breaks• or as an complement to your reading instruction.

• You’ll note that there are a wide range of images and topics for the passages. If you’d like, you can align the passages to the months of the year. For instance, students could read about Ice skating in January and read about pumpkins in October. The images are set out in this resource starting with January using an ice skater for winter but of course can be used in whatever way is best of you and your students and the climate and culture where you live and teach.

• For more of these passages see volume 1 HERE, volume 2 HEREand volume 3 HERE.

• You can have students complete the reading comprehension activities in succession, as part of a nonfiction reading unit, or spread out throughout the year.

Each passage targets a critical reading comprehension skill. For instance, when students read the “Rodeos” passage, they will need to use context clues to determine the meaning of unknown words.

Ways to teach the reading comprehension passages:

When to use the various images and reading passages:

Fact and Opinion •! Students need to distinguish between facts and opinions

after reading a passage about emojis. •! You may want to remind students that:

•! Facts give specific information. They can be proven. Often facts include numbers and dates.

•! Opinions are judgments. They tell what people think, feel or believe.

After students have read the passage, consider having them do a “Fact and Opinion Sort” on the back of their passage. Have them note opinions from the passage in one column. Then, have them chart facts from the passage in the other column. Discuss how they were able to discern which statements were facts and which were opinions. Note key words and phrases that signify an opinion vs. a fact.

Most people use technology every single day. People communicate using technology by not only using words, but emojis, too. Emojis are real images and symbols that can be sent and shared using technology. Emojis are the best idea ever! That’s because emojis are an important way that people communicate with each other. Emojis were created in the late 1990s by Shigetaka Kurita in Japan. He was inspired by the way that weather forecasts use symbols to help show the weather for the day.Kurita created a set of 180 emojis based on the faces people were making and common objects. Emojis are important because they help to add emotions to messages shared with text. Since typed words don’t show emotions, emojis were created to help add feelings to emotionless text. Amazingly, in 2015, the Word of the Year was an emoji. The emoji ‘Face with Tears of Joy’ was chosen because it was the most used emoji in 2015. There’s no doubt about it, emojis are an awesome form of communication, and that’s something to smile about.

7.! What is something you learned about emojis?

We live in a technology-rich world. Most people use technology every single day. People communicate using technology by not only using words, but emojis, too. Emojis are real images and symbols that can be sent and shared using technology. The creation of emojis is one of the best advancements in technology ever. That’s because emojis are now an important part of the way that people communicate with each other. Emojis were first created in the late 1990s by Shigetaka Kurita in Japan. He was inspired by the way that weather forecasts use symbols to help communicate the weather for the day. Kurita created a set of 180 emojis based on the faces people were making and common objects in everyday life, and he changed the world! Why are emojis so important? Well, emojis help to add emotions to messages and information shared digitally. Since digital communication doesn’t allow people to express ideas with emotions, emojis were created to help add emotions and feelings to otherwise emotionless text. There’s no doubt about it, emojis are an incredible form of communication, and that’s something to smile about.
