“Since 2005, the Oak Park Public Library has been training storytelling interns to take storytimes out to the community of Oak Park by visiting local daycare centers.“Our regular storytimes at the library are very popular and are an essential component of our early literacy services, but someone must bring these children to the

library.“What about all of the children whose parents

work during the day? The best solution: take the stories to them. We recruit and train interns so they are equipped to perform dynamic, interactive storytimes. they present meaningful programs to children outside of the library, and model storytelling techniques and introduce new books and rhymes to caregivers.

“This highly successful initiative has reached hundreds of children and we would not be able to provide such robust outreach services to our community without the efforts of the interns.

“We hire students who are either in a library science or early elementary program, and train them in storytelling techniques, performance, book selection, early childhood development, and early literacy.

“Working in pairs, the interns are primed to learn from each other as well as provide essential support during the learning process.

“The storytellers create entertaining, yet educational storytimes and not only learn valuable skills themselves, but also

bring fresh ideas to our team of librarians.“One daycare expressed interest in a science

program, and a brave storyteller came up with the stories and experiments all about the properties of water to take on the road.

“Other interns have brought bilingual stories to children, music/guitar, and sign language. We are passionate about finding was of keeping this innovative program running.

“There are 28 full-day centers, and 23 part-time programs and 75 percent of children 0-5 are cared for by someone other than their parents for at least part of the day. One explanation for low attendance of children of color at storytime is the significant percentage of minority children in daycare.

“Each intern will have the skills and resources to communicate with early childhood caretakers about the importance of reading aloud daily and specific suggestions on how to make the shared book experience more meaningful and enjoyable.

“The interns really bring the stories to life and, in turn, they become more effective leaders in their early childhood education fields.

“The caregivers benefit by learning about new books and exciting ways of presenting them, and the children are exposed to the best of children’s literature and are introduced to the skills they will need to become readers.”

“We visited seven of our highest need daycare centers in Oak Park. We visited them all once a month and we presented baby storytimes.

“Our combined efforts reached over 1,000 children and we presented several early literacy workshops to daycare providers and parents. And what we do in these workshops we explain what early literacy is and we talk about the American Library Association six pre-reading skills

She gave an example of what she would tell caregivers, such as definitions: What is early literacy?

“It’s everything that children know about reading and writing before they can actually read and write. It’s not about teaching phonics to babies or even really teaching the alphabet to babies. It’s about developing those very

basic beginning skills of listening to language, responding to language, hearing all the different sounds that make up our native language.

“So early literacy is a baby who chews on a book. A toddler who wants his favorite book read over and over again and a preschooler who acts out a story.

“Surround your children with books. I tell people to keep (books) low. Keep them in a basket on the floor.

There are six skills: Print motivation and that is basically a child’s

enjoyment of books; Phonological awareness, which is the ability to

hear the smaller sounds in words; Vocabulary, it’s knowing the names of things; Print awareness is noticing print everywhere in our

environment; Narrative skills is the ability to describe events and

to tell stories; and All of these skills together are part of print

motivation to encourage kids to read for fun.

WET DAYSeveral Rotarians braved the rain on May 31 for River Forest’s annual Memorial Day Parade.

PETS OF THE WEEK

Triskit is a beautiful young brown tabby with fur that is soft and sleek to the touch. She adores playtime and finds time with a "cat dancer" to be much to her delight! Triskit is a very affectionate feline, quick to purr and fond of the other cats in the main adoption room. Because Triskit may find transition to new surroundings more challenging than most felines our staff has developed a specially tailored program to help her settle in to her new home. Triskit is dreaming of a quiet home where she can enjoy the companionship of a loving, experienced cat caretaker and a feline friend or two.

Rufus is a young and energetic lab who is looking for an active home where he can get all the attention and exercise that's so important to him. He's a handsome lad who loves to play hard. He's got a good start to his housebreaking and also knows some of his basic commands. Rufus is going to need some obedience and leash training but with a dedicated owner, he will be an awesome companion for a long time. Rufus is requesting a cat-free home.
