Message Happy New Year to one and all! On 28th January, I spoke at a service for Christian Unity and I spoke on the terminal decline of mainstream Christian churches. Our church is actually doing quite well. Our current Sunday congregations represent quite a healthy proportion of our local population and our special services attract even more. If you compare us with churches across the nation we are in good health. However, mainstream churches are in terminal decline because we have failed to share the faith with the next generation. I was chatting with a committed Christian from the Millennial generation, (aged 23-38) she believed the issue was the way we do church, her generation does not join things in the same way as previous generations. I think it is something deeper. I think there are millions of people in the country who have been introduced to church and could not find any passion and integrity in it. They looked at the church and they did not find something they needed. They should have found the meaning of life. They should have found a relationship with the almighty creator of the universe. They should have found teaching on lifestyle which led them to love and service and complete fulfilment and contentment in life. Instead, what did they find? Arguments about petty issues. People who do not practice what they preach. Prayers which expect nothing of God. Worship which does not love Him. A church which abandons the truth we have been given in an attempt to be popular with people who don't believe. Denominations are in terminal decline but I do not believe individual churches have to be. I believe "the local church is the hope of the world." We have a gospel to proclaim which is good news for all people. We have an almighty heavenly father to worship. We have a mission to love God, love each other and love our neighbour; showing God's love to all. I believe, in Jesus name, that every church can be revived. All that is needed is to preach the gospel with integrity, to worship in Spirit and truth, and to truly love each other. Let’s see if we can do that in our parish. Hobby Drop-in Group We meet on the 1st & 3rd Wednesday of each month, from 9.30 am - 11.30 am. in All Saints Church, Raughton Head (next meetings 5th February, 19th February). The group creates a meeting place for local folk to meet and share their creative ideas. We are encouraging each other with various projects and share materials no longer needed. Spring cleaning time might uncover more craft projects yet to complete or share. The community rag rug is still in progress and has worked around the edges; as one does in life. It now needs some more volunteers to learn the fine art of ‘clippy’ or ‘proddy’ mat making. We use recycled wool fabrics to complete the design of 'tulips in a vase.’ You are welcome to call in for a chat, a brew and to observe historic skills coming into their own again. In the past year, we celebrated the creative talents of the community with a festival in church in October. The group have contributed many items for charity groups, the Shoe box appeal being one. We are open to any suggestions or requests to make hand-made items. The group have been kindly supported by the Parish Council Grants to acquire two sturdy fold-up tables which will allow for more projects to get underway. This support is greatly appreciated. Refreshments provided and any donations go to church funds. Glenda Furniss - 07763 372195 Janet Preston - 016974 76388

Raughton Head W.I. Looking Back - 2019 January - We started 2019 with our 95th Birthday and to celebrate we enjoyed ‘One Pot Winter Cooking’. Penny Jones, Ina Monkhouse, Pat Jackson, Vera Harris, Felicity Coulthard and Amanda Lax each cooked up a pot of something to enjoy on a winter’s night. This was followed by birthday caked baked by Ina and Vera. February - David Raffles gave us a history of Stead McAlpine. March - The time for us to bring out our creativity when Jennifer Carruthers showed us how to recycle greeting cards. April - With Spring here we travelled to The Shetland Islands courtesy of Ken Graham. May - Everything became a lot more physical when Nicola from MokyFit came and got us all exercising which certainly got our hearts pumping and gave us an appetite for our supper. June - We ventured out and visited Oak Tree Animal Refuge. July - Malcolm Pape shared his interest in birds. August - We had a Treasure Hunt that lead us to The Globe Pub, Calthwaite. September - Our speaker was Ian Tyler who spoke about Mines & Minerals. October - We had a visit from Mary and Trevor from Samaritans who told us all about the invaluable work they do. November - There was our all-important AGM. Jackie Collinson is our returning President for 2020.The overall winner of our monthly competitions was Janet Preston. Ina Monkhouse was second and third was Amanda Lax. Once the serious part was over we had a Fish & Chip Supper and some in house entertainment. December - we all met up for our Christmas lunch which was Denton House, Hesket Newmarket, a relaxed and very enjoyable outing. Looking Forward -2020 As January and February can produce some horrible weather, it was decided that these two meetings would move from the evenings to afternoons, starting at 2.30 pm. Hopefully this will enable members to attend safely without having to battle the elements in the dark. January - This meeting is our 96th Birthday and to celebrate this we are having an Afternoon Tea where Pat Hall from The Helena Thompson Museum, Workington will tell us all about ‘The History of Medicine’. The competition is ‘A Tea Cup & Saucer’. February - We are having a talk and demonstration about herbs from Helens Herbs. The competition will by ‘A Herb Recipe’. We hope 2020 will be another successful year. The new programme looks good and has something for everyone to enjoy. Guests are always welcome at our meetings. We charge £3.00 and there is always a cup of tea/coffee and biscuits but more importantly, good company. Marian Collins - 016974 76903

And I said to the man who stood at the gate of the year;

“Give me a light that I might tread safely into the unknown.”

And he replied;

“Go out into the darkness and put your hand into the hand of God. That shall be to you better than light and safer than a known way.”

So I went forth, and finding the Hand of God, trod gladly into the night.

And He led me towards the hills and the breaking of day in the lone East.

Diary 2020 A number of papers report that people who have booked a break for the Early May Bank Holiday this year may be in for a shock, because 30 million diaries and calendars have printed the wrong date. The Times reports that the government moved the date from Monday the 4th May to Friday 8th May to coincide with the 75th anniversary of VE Day - but the change was announced after the diaries and calendars were printed. And it’s a Leap Year.

Stockdalewath Weather – November 2019 This November was surprisingly cold. It never gave the impression of being particularly cold but the average maximum ended up the 4th coldest I have recorded. This suggests a relatively dull month which it was, there being only about 20% of the possible sunshine, which equates to around 55 hours. There were 3 cold and clear days which accounted for a big chunk of the sunshine. Otherwise, though there were 13 other days with frost, the month was mostly cloudy. Even so the average minimum was somewhat below the long-term average, but did not approach the lowest I have recorded, in 1993 with -1.84º. This was not an especially wet month. It was cloudy but with well below average rainfall. In part this was due to the prevalence of easterly winds which partly accounted for the cool month but also led to less rain. The rain, similar to June, tended to be concentrated in the east part of the country with serious flooding late in the month in Yorkshire. The maximum was only being beaten by that of 1993 (11.73º). This fall in the average maximum continued the broadly downward trend that has been shown since 2007. The rainfall was somewhat higher than anything we have had since 2012. Autumn did not exhibit anything in the way of extremes, though one of the reasons for the low maximum would be the lack of any especially warm spells in September or October, other than one short period in the middle of September. Stockdalewath Weather – December 2019 From the point of view of weather this was a very ordinary December. Rainfall was close to the average. The 18.1 mm on the 10th/11th was significantly higher than that of any other day. It was, however, a generally cloudy month, with a sunshine figure of only around 35 hours which is about 15% of the maximum possible. The month had started cold with the 1st being a clear day. This day and the 2nd produced the only significant frosts of the month. Only 4 other days had frost. The absence of frost gave a comparatively high average minimum. However, December is one of those months where very low temperatures are possible, so the long-term average is affected greatly by these extremes. This December can, therefore, not be considered out of the ordinary. No snow fell in the month, and there were few occasions where it was even possible for snow at this altitude. In fact, there was little snow anywhere, even over the Lakeland fells.

13.69 13.73 5.41 4.63 1063.46 882.13 At first glance one would think that this year has not been one of extremes. The perception of an ordinary year in the averages hides a few exceptions. After a dry winter, the months of December, January & February being the 3rd driest I have recorded, the rainfall was generally higher right through the rest of the year. Spring had record rainfall & Summer was only beaten by that of 2012. Overall this led to the 4th wettest year I have recorded since 1989, 2015 (1227 mm) being the highest. There appears to be a trend here with the average rising through the 800s since 2000. The winter was one of very little snow, but also low rainfall. The dryness might have suggested a cold winter but it was not the case with no prolonged cold spells. In fact February produced a record high temperature of 16.4°. Spring had average temperatures. The Summer was a little warmer than the long-term average. It did, however produce a spell of weather in July which was quite exceptional in many parts of the country. 25th July was a blisteringly hot day throughout much of the county with a temperature here of 31.8°, which is the 2nd highest July temperature I have ever recorded. The Autumn & early part of the Winter was generally cool but with few extremes. Ewan Preston - 016974 76388
