He said he doesn’t know where that stands but he is rescinding that motion. Ken then said that David Neil had purchased for the community a 12’ pre-lit Christmas tree that was on sale at Costco for only $320.97, including tax, with his own money. Ken made a motion to reimburse David $320.97 from the community treasury. Sharon Newcomb seconded the motion. Marvin Chynoweth said he thought the community office was going to purchase the Christmas tree so why are we going to have a vote on the motion. Someone mentioned that we are voting on it in case the office doesn’t come through and we would have a tree that people don’t have to risk their life decorating. Charlie Basile said the current Christmas tree was bought by the previous owners of The Highlands. Charlie said he understands that Howard and Rita Mathis are looking into purchasing a tree for the community. After a lengthy discussion, the motion was approved by a show of hands by the residents in attendance. January 2013 Highlands Community Business Meeting Minutes

(continued on page 6)

The meeting opened on Saturday, January 4, 2014 at 9:03 a.m. with Charlie Basile serving as moderator. A prayer followed the Pledge of Allegiance.

Anne Lafontaine gave the Treasurer’s Report. She said January would be a month of transition as she will be working with Susie Hammerling, whom will be our new community Treasurer starting in February. Anne also said she wants everyone to be aware that the two reports she hands out at the meeting include the Social Committee report along with the Treasurer’s report. Marvin Chynoweth asked Anne about the expense for supplies? Anne said it was to replenish supplies in the kitchen, like coffee, cups, utensils, etc. Anne thanked everyone for being there for her over the last four years while she was Treasurer.

Ken Nicholson said there was no election held for Secretary or Treasurer this morning because only one candidate signed up for each position. He announced that Susie Hammerling will be the new Treasurer taking over for Anne Lafontaine and Jayne Haas will be the new Secretary taking over for Barbara Nicholson.

Ken Nicholson said at the last meeting there was a motion made by someone for $1,000 for a new Christmas tree. He said that motion has died because it was never put in writing so it could be placed in the newsletter. He said there would be no vote for that motion. From the Highlands Resident Managers

Howard and Rita Mathis

Office: 352-518-4607

AUGH! We missed the January newsletter deadline!!

We hope everyone had a wonderful Holiday Season. We appreciated all the beautiful Christmas cards and all the goodies that were brought to the office for the staff’s enjoyment. Now we have to work off the extra pounds.

We can’t say THANK YOU enough for all the faithful volunteers who plan all the social events and work tirelessly decorating, preparing food, and cleaning up afterwards for all the Residents at The Highlands to enjoy.

We also want to thank everyone that has cleaned their homes and sites. It makes a big difference in our Community and the value of our homes. We understand there are some that are on a waiting list and we are working with them. Currently we are doing our rechecks. For the ones that have not yet accomplished the tasks, we ask you to call the office with an estimated time of completion. We hear all the complements on the Community and want everyone to take pride in its appearance.

Rita is now updating Residents files. There are still Residents that have not turned in the 2014 HTA Emergency Registration Form. We urge those of you to fill out the form and turn it in. This not only is required by Hometown America, we also need the information for security purposes. If you have renewed your Driver’s License in the last year or so we need to make a copy of it for our files. All the information we ask for is currently in your file, we only need to bring it up to date. If you would like to come by the office, Rita will make a copy of your License and update any of the other needed info.

We hope everyone has signed up for the continuing education “Come Get Social”. February 11th at 2:00-3:30. It is a free workshop on Facebook & Twitter so Residents can stay in touch with family and friends on their computer. All are welcome. Hope to see you there!

(continued on next page)

Ken Nicholson said the New Year’s Eve party here in the clubhouse was a huge success. He thanked Jim and Sue Bayes for decorating the tables. He then thanked his wife Barbara, Dick and Joan Stein, and Glen and Susie Hammerling for all their help in preparing the food tables and cleaning up after the party.

Marvin Chynoweth asked if anyone is going to go to the office and talk to management about reimbursing the treasury for the $320.97 that had just been voted on for the Christmas tree. Charlie Basile said several people have already talked to them and that they were looking into it. Ken Nicholson suggested to Marvin that he go and speak with Howard and Rita Mathis.

Jo Basile said she understands that management is not going to let anyone go on a ladder to decorate the tree. Chris Weegar said management indicated they would help decorate the tree along with the residents and that no resident would be climbing on a ladder.

Susie Hammerling said we need to start making our community managers responsible to help make this community look great. She said they are trying to sell houses and how would it look if a prospective buyer came into the clubhouse and see the Christmas tree decorated only as far as we can reach. She added that residents should put a little buzz in the managers’ ears that these are not things that are solely for our benefit; everything we are asking for will help our community look great and be a proud community. We need to make them understand that all these things we are asking for help sell our community. She said if we approach the requests from that direction maybe we will have a little more success in getting the things we need.

Jayne Haas said management has completed four-sided inspections and notified some residents about the need to spruce up their houses. As a community, she said, we need to find out what is going on with the Poupard’s house because it is an eye sore with a pile of dirt in the driveway, trenches everywhere, mold on the curbing, construction debris on the front porch and nothing being done. She added that although the house is probably in litigation, she feels we, as a community, need an update. Jayne then said if anyone happens to know anything that would be appreciated, but, if not, she can go see Howard Mathis and ask him about it. Susie Hammerling said management is asking us to take care of our yards; they need to make sure our community looks right too.

Jackie Hubbard, reporting for the Social Committee, said their December meeting had been canceled for the community photography event and that she has nothing to report for January. She said the Social Committee is trying to plan a Valentine Day’s event, but nothing has been scheduled.

John Bongiardina said a group of residents would be going to Tampa Bay Downs on January 15th. He said there are still 14 seats available on the bus. The $35 cost includes bus transportation, entrance fee, program and lunch buffet. Only items not included are refreshments and betting money. He said they will meet behind the clubhouse at 9:45 a.m. and the bus will leave at 10:15 a.m. Monday, January 6th is the last day to sign-up.

Barb Geiling reporting for the Sunshine Committee said one Get-Well Basket was given out last month. She said last year the committee sent out eleven sympathy cards, five Memorial Bowls and fifty Get-Well Baskets.

Kenny White thanked the volunteers who helped deliver Christmas cards. He also thanked Heather Phillips for organizing the distribution of Christmas cards.

Donna Van Wieren said the photographer would be here on January 21st for residents who would like to have their picture taken. A signup sheet will be posted on the bulletin board. Saying that 60 people have already had their picture taken, she added that she didn’t know when the pictures would be delivered. Donna thanked Linda Chynoweth and Andrea McDermott for helping.

Ned Sponsler announced that Hot Dog Night would be Wednesday, January 8th. A sign-up sheet is posted on the bulletin board.

9

(Minutes from December Community Meeting continued from previous page.)

Betty Bongiardina said she wanted everyone to know that management sent her and the other volunteers who helped with the Christmas decorations a letter saying how beautiful the clubhouse looked and thanking them for helping to make the community look nice. She said the previous management had never done that. Betty said their letter was really appreciated.

Sharon Newcomb said the community needs a second exit in case of a hurricane. Ned Sponsler said the Pasco County Planning Commission would make that decision. Charlie Basile said it is up to Hometown America if they want to request a second exit.

The meeting was adjourned at 9:31 a.m.

The next community meeting will be held on Saturday, February 1, 2014.

Barbara Nicholson, Community Secretary

Chicken Tortellini Soup

Store-bought tortellini and roasted chicken put this recipe squarely in the

easy-to-make category, yet it tastes like it took all day. Makes 12 cups. Total prep

time: 1 hour

2 cups diced onion

2 cups sliced celery

1 cup sliced carrot

1 Tbsp. minced garlic

1 Tbsp. Dried Italian seasoning

2 Tbsp. Olive oil

1/2 cup dry sherry

8 cups low-sodium chicken broth

4 cups chopped cooked chicken (1 lb.)

3 cups refrigerated cheese-filled tortellini (9 oz.

Salt and black pepper to taste

Thinly sliced fresh basil

Sweat onion, celery, carrot, garlic, and Italian seasoning in oil in a Dutch oven or large pot over medium heat for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Deglaze pot with sherry and simmer until nearly evaporated.

Stir in broth, bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer soup 10 minutes. Add the chicken and tortellini, and simmer, partially covered, until tortellini is cooked through. 8-10 minutes

Season with salt and pepper.

Steps to Success

1. Don’t be afraid to use the celery leaves in the soup—they have a mildly sweet and bitter flavor.

2. Dry sherry gives the soup a slightly sweet taste, but dry white wine works fine, too.

Ladies Bible Study

In early fall we were busy studying “The Women of the Bible” and how their emotions determined their choices. Now we are focusing on “OUR” emotions and the fact that emotions don’t THINK . . . They just REACT. Not wanting to make the same old mistakes, we’ve decided to look into God’s word and make the necessary adjustments in order to have a fuller life and a deeper faith.

Come discover how blessed we really are and how we can “pass it on” when we understand more how to be women of faith.

Join us on Tuesday at 10AM in the clubhouse library. Any questions, please call me.

The Men’s Bible Study: Tuesdays 7-8 PM., Highlands Club House Library.

We started our 4th year in September. We are working on a course on CHRISTIAN APOLOGETICS and discussing the following items:

• Is there a GOD and does He exist? • Are there any real differences between the various world religions? • Is the Bible the Word of GOD? • Can we believe in the Holy Bible?

All are welcome to join in our dialog. Should you have any questions please give Bill Hoff a call.

Note: You do not have to have a Bible background, we are all learning about faith, spirituality, and a common interest in our future.

Bocci Ball

We play on Saturday mornings at 10AM for most of the year. Everyone come on out and join us for some great fun.

A NEW FITNESS OPPORTUNITY!

As of the New Year we have a new regimen to support healthy living resolutions. The fitness class now has an expanded schedule at The Highlands.

Beginning in January 2014, the “cardio combo” classes meet three times per week on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

All three classes meet from noon to 1p.m. in the Highlands club house and are led by a professional fitness instructor, Michelle Wilson, who has many years of teaching experience with major health organizations such as the Y Center and Humana. Michelle is also a certified personal trainer and is very skilled in addressing the fitness needs of seniors, including those individuals just beginning an exercise routine or challenged by chronic physical limitations. No matter what your present fitness level, rest assured that you will feel engaged and energized by her teaching methods.

Clearly, we are very privileged to have Michelle as our in-house fitness instructor and our cardio combo classes are a fun and safe way to maintain or increase your overall level of fitness. The exercise-to-music class format is adaptable to a wide range of fitness levels and includes stretching, strengthening, and low-impact aerobic exercises. Participants are encouraged to bring light hand weights (2-5 pounds) for the strengthening and toning portion of the class. Chair exercise options are also available for beginners or those with physical limitations.

BEST OF ALL, for only $5 per class, you can avoid the cost and hassle of outside gym memberships. No driving back and forth to external facilities…it’s all right in our own back yards! Don’t waste another minute…make a New Year’s commitment to include this convenient, healthy activity in your weekly schedule. For further information, please feel free to call any of the following Highlands residents.

Ceramics classes are held every Tuesday from 11:30 to 1:30PM. There is a $5 charge per session: $4 for the instructor, $1 to the kitty to keep supplies stocked. A large selection of glazes and acrylics are maintained in our craft room for student use and our own kiln is used to fire all pieces. A small selection of bisque pieces is available from which to choose, but for greater choice students are encouraged to obtain their own greenware or bisque pieces from local suppliers. Regular participants are to bring their own brushes and cleaning supplies, however first timers can borrow supplies to see if they like it enough to continue before they purchase their own supplies.

Highlands Choral Rehearsals Every Wednesday

We meet every Wednesday from 10:30 AM to noon to develop an interesting variety of pieces that we perform at various Highlands events, such as out Christmas Dinner.

Ruth True is our conductor and Chris Weegar is our accompanist.

The songs in our repertoire are fun and we have a good time learning them together.

If you are interested in joining, please come any Wednesday morning and join the music.

All residents are welcome. No try outs are required.

Open Games

If you’re interested in playing a variety of games, come join us on Thursday mornings at 10AM and/or Sunday evenings at 7PM in the clubhouse card room. It’s an informal gathering of folks to play games according to the group’s mood. Pegs & Jokers and Hand & Foot are favorites. All are welcome.

Reducing Redundancy

The two pages normally found in the next section of the newsletter are now published quarterly. The information on these two pages changes infrequently. The two “missing” pages contain articles about contributions for causes, name tags, library donations, the form for updating directory information, watering restrictions, trash pickup, submission of newsletter contributions, and the Social Committee’s ticket sales procedures.

If you require any of this information before it is republished, the two pages of note appeared last in the December 2013 newsletter. You can access a copy of that issue and other prior newsletters from our website. http://www.floridahighlands.com Simply click on “Past Issues” in the middle of the home page. Should you have difficulty accessing past issues, don’t hesitate to give me a call for help.
