Jim and Irene Frazier lived in theirhome on Old Siler City Road for 47 years. Eventhe most non-materialistic of us would tend to

get attached to a house weve called home forthat long. That 47 year-old streak ended onTuesday afternoon, May 11th. Around 5:30 Jim,a retired State Farm insurance salesman wasin the kitchen near the back of the house whileIrene, who used to teach at Eastern Randolph, sat in their family room dozing and watchingTV. Outside, Michael and Michelle Harmonrode past on their way to Harvest House. Asthey passed, Michelle noticed a plume ofsmoke coming from the Frazier residence. Afterrealizing what could be happening, theHarmons turned around and returned to offertheir help. While Michelle dialed 911, Michaelentered the house and assisted the Fraziers intheir escape. By the time they had reached theoutdoors, Michelle was letting their son anddaughter-in-law Rick and Nancy know whatwas happening.

According to the family, Irene had just

awoken to the smell of smoke and was in theprocess of letting Jim know her suspicions. Atip of the cap is due to the volunteer firedepartments of Franklinville, Coleridge, andErect, who beat the family to the scene andbegan strategically battling the blaze. The localAmerican Red Cross also came to assist. Those young men came in and really got towork trying to save what they could and make

things safe Nancy Frazier told us. They did awonderful job and deserve to be recognized!

By 10:45 that night, Franklinvilles KyleDixon made a last sweep and declared theeffort finished. What remained was a charred,

melted, smoke-damaged interior, but minimalexterior and foundation damage. And of course,no injuries! Jim and Irene were able to save agood portion of their belongings, but manykeepsakes and possession are ruined fromsmoke damage. (or in the case of theirvehicles, simply melted beyond use) Theelectrical fire is believed to have started in theirgarage, hence the major damage to the cars, and continued into the house causing the mostdamage on that side of the structure. The firemarshall was not able to site a specific outlet orelectrical device as the cause of the blaze.

According to family, the Fraziers weredazed and stunned afterwards (understandablyso) but have moved forward in to deal withtheir insurance as well as securing alternateliving arrangements for the foreseeable future. As a community, we encourage you to

commend the bravery and selflessness of thevolunteer fire departments and the Harmons,as well as to keep the Fraziers in your prayers. While we cant take it all with us, losing a homeis never easy. We pray that God shows up andshows off by using this situation to bless them.

Oneof eight siblings, Thompsons mother taughther art from the time she could sit at thekitchen table. While still in elementaryschool, she attended the prestigiousCarnegie Tam OShanter art classes inPittsburgh.

For theseefforts, she won many awards includingOutstanding Art Center for three years forthe world-wide Army Quality of Lifeprograms a unique achievement among

CCommunityLifeDave & Lew cool off your summer

You cant get much better thanhomemade ice cream in the summer. That s just a fact. And as thetemperature rises in Ramseur, thelines grow outside of Dave & LewsHomemade Ice Cream. Locatedstrategically next to Big Daddys Pizza, the former home of TCBY is nowcranking out more tasty treats; but thistime with a local, authentic twist. DaveCraven and Lewis Yow, both 20 year-old business majors, began theirventure back around Christmas whenthey decided that what Ramseur

needed was an ice cream shop. We realized the town didnt have one, so that was aniche we could fill Lew told us. So starting in January, they cranked up their ice creammakers and began practicing and refiningtheir technique. It was the dead of winter andwe made and ate so much ice cream! DaveCraven recalled No one was in the mood forit but we had to get it right. Finally, May came around andthe enterprising duo opened up and beganmanning their new business. Now open from11 am until 9 pm (and oftentimes laterdepending on the demand) Dave & Lewsoffers at least 4 flavors of homemade icecream each day. We always have VanillaLew said, and we rotate other flavors everyday depending on what fruit is available or what kind of requests we get. Recentflavors include Banana, Peach, Strawberry, Birthday Cake Batter, Cookies n Cream,Reeses, Oreo, Butterfinger, Snickers and Butter Pecan. They even take flavorrequests, as long as there is a demand or if you want to buy multiple gallons. So far,Cookies n Cream and Banana sell out quickest. The two young men have shown a flair for business and a courageouswillingness to try and succeed as a local business in a town that has suffered job lossafter job loss. I asked Yow if he had any advice or hints to give to others with anentrepreneurial itch. I would just say you gotta create a product that is unique and thatpeople really want. And dont be stubborn, if your customers arent buying then youhave to change something. Its all about pleasing the people. So whats next? Theyplan to keep scooping as long as there are people to serve. It may just be seasonal, but even as they return to UNC-Charlotte and NC State in the fall, you just may be

able to enjoy the creamy stylings of Dave & Lew

s Homemade Ice Cream all year long!

At the center of the Village is a deep well of life-giving waterwhere the townspeople meet. As they draw water their voices

blend in the culture, society and wisdom that they share. Eachmonth meet here at the well to hear those voices.

Graduation is one of the few ritual rite of passage ceremoniesleft in our culture. It marks a line in the sand from what you aretoday to pave the way or to commence toward the next part ofyour life. From unlearned to learned, the fruits of our labormanifest as we step off the stage with diploma in hand. In ourfamily, a tradition began almost without notice. When I graduated,my grandmother, Granna, pressed my graduation gown. I sat ona pillow on the floor and watched as she shifted and moved thewrinkled fabric, creating smooth, even folds. As she ironed, shespoke, smoothing the wrinkled fears of my future. I loved thattime. She had ironed my mothers gown as well, unknowinglybeginning the tradition. This year she irons my daughters gown.

As I silently enter the room, I am unnoticed. So intent andfocused is the group in this room. It seems that my daughter hasbrought along two graduating friends who also need gowns

    pressed.

The wrinkled fabric shifts and glides as Grandmotherspeaks. Her movements are identical to times past, though herbody more bent, and her hair more silver. But her words carrythat same weight, certainty and intensity. The young ones sit onpillows, the cycle of tradition, of renewal, repeating before myeyes. Grannas words are spoken from wisdom and experience. She knows that life teaches us using every moment. Herexperiences constantly deepen her and the gown pressing talksare never the sameyes, you have been learning and buildingknowledge in your minds she was in mid-sentence when I

entered, but have you sat still and truly examined your mind?,she asks no one. Ninety-nine percent of your thoughts are totallyrepetitive and the mind pretends that theyre really SERIOUS thistime. You have reached graduation by studying, learning, memorizing and regurgitating information. Now you know whateverybody else knows. Now you can be what everybody else willbe OR!!, she blurts out loudly, causing everybody to jump, youcan be different, you can be yourself and live your lifes purpose!Everybody waited. Be present, be still, be in every moment ofyour life. Become alive. The past is NOT you. That is your story. We have some terrible stories, some of us. We tell them, we re-live them, we repeat them over and over again. The mind-chatterrepeating what we have done or not done or what was done tousremember that 99% of your thoughts are repetitive? Howcan we live now if were busy identifying with and being who ourstory paints us (over and over) to be? You are not your story. The future is built with bricks of each present moment. Pull yourattention to exactly where you are. Look at it. Hear it. Bepresent with your senses. Dont THINK a feeling. Get out of your

    head.

Begin to feel and notice spaces between words.

    Know

stillness. Thought cannot notice stillness-thought is noise. Beinglike others is following the stream of mind chatter to a fate anddestiny of living a used story of the past, with mediocrity. Whenthe mental noise becomes uncomfortable, we turn on outer noisearound us, to cover it up. Turn everything off and be still!Sense longer and longer spaces of comfortable silence. Shestopped speaking for a moment. My mind waited for her next

    word.

Then I noticed my mind having a sort of argument WITHME in my head. It was explaining how no, theres no chatter inmy head and besides I dont turn on the TV and radio for noise, Ionly want it for the news! Oh my gosh, I realized, my mind ischattering and being exactly like she had said. No silence, nostillness, but noisy and chattery thoughts.

The gowns were pressed and freshly hanging. The graduatesstood. Receiving their gowns, a smile and a hug they walkedaway toward a future that would be more alive and more present

with a useful tool to make it happen. These young ones wouldnot be like everyone else, and neither would I, I decided. IfGranna could continue to learn and live life in each presentmoment with fresh realizations to share with new generations;then so could I. Be still and know

Dr. Evil:I think someone has daddy issues!AustinPowers:Nothing could be my father from the truth. Imean, for me this is a dad issue...DEAD issue..dead-

beat dad...daddy didnt love me! ... I never thought I

would use Austin Powers: Goldmember as a catalystfor deep thought - but there you go. June is all aboutGrads n Dads. And while I celebrate the greatrelationship I have with my dad; I know for many its

just another reminder of the sperm-donor of a dad who always letyou down.

We have an epidemic of fatherlessness on our hands. Thevicious cycle of men (I use the term loosely and for lack of anotherword) who lack the responsibility and (ahem) fortitude to father theirchildren is an issue largely overlooked considered the devastating

effects it has. Children without fathers are five times more likely tolive in poverty and commit crime, nine times more likely to drop outof school, and 20 times more likely to end up in prison. (and in turn

father a fatherless child of their own.) There are many programsdevoted to changing this, but I think the most important thing tograsp is this: even if you have the worst earthly dad - you have aFather that loves you perfectly. You have a Father who created youfor a purpose, considers you a treasure, will never leave or forsakeyou, and has plans for you to prosper. Once you realize what arelationship with God The Father is all about, maybe youll be ableto become the father, son, or daughter you ve always wanted to be.And as I anticipate October and my first shot at being a Dad, I praythat my daughter will always know she has 2 fathers who love her

    unconditionally.
