Raids

Every year we secure a range of street collection permits, so contact us for available dates. If there’s somewhere you’d like to collect, let us know and we’ll apply for a permit. Please give us as much notice as possible – most councils book up their Saturday collections a year in advance!

Or if you don’t fancy hitting the streets, how about raiding your local supermarket, shopping centre, theatre lobby, train station or university campus?

Hula hoop raidYou’ve heard of the three-legged race, now try the hula hoop raid! Pair up in a hula hoop and get raiding. You’re bound to get loads of attention, which means more donations! We’ll provide the hula hoop - call our fundraising team on 0844 515 2109 or email [email protected] to request one.

£25 could mean the difference between someone keeping their home or not: this covers the average cost of a call to the Shelter helpline.

£150 could help pay for up to seven hours of a Shelter adviser’s time, during which they could register children from a homeless family with a new school, or issue court proceedings to prevent a family being evicted.

£250 could pay the removal costs for a family moving out of a condemned building. It could also help cover the cost of making their new home habitable and secure.

£500 could give 12 Shelter advisers the specialist training they need to deal with child protection, to improve the life chances of hundreds – possibly thousands – of vulnerable children.

£2,211 could pay for an advisor to work for an entire month and help more than thirty families under threat of losing their homes.

£5,107 could pay to operate Shelter’s free housing advice helpline for a whole day, helping people who are experiencing homelessness and urgently require accommodation, or are at risk of losing their home due to rent or mortgage arrears.

Whatever you raise, you’ll be funding vital work to help homeless and badly housed people.

Thank you!

Each year Shelter advises thousands of students and young people about their housing rights. By supporting Shelter and encouraging others to do so, you’ll be making a vital contribution to our work.

Jenny had a number of problems in the flat she was renting. The toilet was broken for three weeks, she had no hot water during the winter and there were problems with the gas fire. Despite notifying her landlord, he did nothing to resolve the problems.

When she decided that she could no longer cope living in such terrible conditions, she gave her notice to leave the flat, but predicted that she would have problems getting her deposit back: ‘I knew from the way he had treated me, and the fact that he had kept all of his previous tenants’ deposit, that I had no chance of getting it back alone’.

Jenny contacted Shelter on our free housing advice helpline. One of our advisers assisted her by drafting the paperwork necessary to begin court proceedings against her landlord. Following proceedings, she received her full deposit back from her landlord after he failed to register it with a Tenancy Deposit Protection Scheme. She described the support Shelter gave her as ‘unbelievably brilliant’.

Sending in the moneyPlease send in the money raised from your collection or event within a month of the event being held. Please don’t send cash through the post. Bank any cash or cheques made payable to you and then write a single cheque for the total amount collected, payable to Shelter. Please return this cheque, along with a donation form, to:

Rags Co-ordinatorCommunity and Events TeamShelter88 Old StreetLondon EC1V 9HU

It’s essential to include a donation form so we know where the money has come from, and so we can thank you (we can send you one of these).

Keep in touchWe’d love to know what you’ve got planned, how it’s going, and any opinions and ideas you may have. You can contact us by email at [email protected] or phone 0844 515 2109. And if you’re in the area, pop in and see us – we’d love to meet you!

Be legal and safe

RafflesFor small raffles that are part of a bigger event, you do not need a license so long as you sell tickets and make the prize draw during the event itself (cash prizes are not permitted). The same applies to private raffles where you are only selling tickets to members of a club.

For larger raffles and lotteries that involve selling tickets to members of the public, you must apply to the local registration authority (local council) beforehand for a licence permit.

Tickets must not be sold by anyone under the age of 16. For guidance, see the Gambling Commission’s website www.gamblingcommission.gov.uk CollectionsIf you plan to hold a collection on private property, such as a pub or shopping centre, please gain permission from the owner or manager. If you collect on the street you must secure a permit from the local authority for the area you wish to collect in (we can help you with this). Collecting money door to door is illegal without a licence.

The minimum legal age for collecting money is 18 in London and 16 everywhere else. If you want to hold a collection, use a sealed collecting tin and carry an ID card. We can provide you with these - email [email protected] or call 0844 515 2109.

Please follow the rules sent with your collection tin; many councils require a breakdown of how much each person collects, so make sure you keep a record.

Other points to remember If you are selling alcohol, you need a liquor licence, which you can apply for from the local magistrates’ court. At a one-off event, you don’t need a licence to sell food, but you should follow the food hygiene regulations – visit www.food.gov.uk for these. For events that run over a number of days, please register with your local authority.

Events involving entertainment such as singing, music or dancing require a licence. If your venue does not already have a Public Entertainment Licence, you need to obtain one from the local authority. Venues such as students’ unions should already have this. Let Shelter know about the event you are planning, and we can make sure you’re properly supported.

If you would like to use the Shelter logo we are happy to supply it, but please let us see the publicity materials first. Fundraising materials you produce should carry the wording:In aid of Shelter. Registered charity in England and Wales (263710) and in Scotland (SC002327).

Health and safety – points to consider to ensure your event, and everyone attending it, stays safe:

First aid Do you have a qualified first aider present or will it be enough to have a first aid box? St John Ambulance may be able to help. Make sure you have a phone to hand.

Venue Do not exceed capacity, and ensure there is good access and emergency exits. Does the venue have adequate car parking, toilet facilities, disabled access? Do you need on-site catering facilities? Where are the fire extinguishers kept?

Food Ensure food is stored and handled correctly, following hygiene rules. Foods that contain nuts or other ingredients that people may be allergic to must be clearly labelled.

Helpers Provide helpers with information about health and safety and make sure they know what’s expected of them in an emergency.

Money Keep cash in a locked box. Take extra care when carrying money around.

Children Ensure that children are safe and adequately supervised.

Shelter cannot accept any responsibility for injury, accident, damage or loss as a result of your event. It is essential that you ensure your event is safe for all concerned.

Until there’s a home for everyoneWe are one of the richest countries in the world, and yet millions of people in Britain wake up every day in housing that is run-down, overcrowded, or dangerous. Many others have lost their home altogether. Bad housing robs us of security, health, and a fair chance in life.

Shelter helps more than 170,000 people a year fight for their rights, get back on their feet, and find and keep a home. We also tackle the root causes of bad housing by campaigning for new laws, policies, and solutions.

Our website gets more than 100,000 visits a month; visit shelter.org.uk to join our campaign, find housing advice, or make a donation.

We need your help to continue our work. Please support us.
